“Senior Minister of State” at FCO Smears British Ally

Many wonder just what Britain’s first, and likely last, “Senior Minister of State” at the Foreign Office does. Well smearing one of Britain’s closest allies in the House of Lords is probably not in the job description. Answering a written question, Baroness Warsi replied:

“We have made no assessment of the number of non-violent protestors killed or injured in the Occupied Palestinian Territories since 2002. According to the website of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 3,643 Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israelis since 1 January 2012 in incidents directly related to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in the West Bank and Gaza strip.”

Only one problem. That number is not true. The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs states quite clearly that the actual figure of Palestinians killed by Israelis since 2012 was 262. Out by thousands. Why she felt the need to continue the answer beyond the first sentence is baffling. A correction is called for…

Personally I think the I s r a e l i s have been more than patient, soft-handed and too concerned with ‘oomin rights. They should simply wipe out every last so-called Palestinian and take the land for themselves. It is the only way the problem will ever be solved. The Pals don’t and never will want peace.

      Or, in order to make a balanced equation:

      Let y=number of 4be2s killed.
      For any value of y, where y>0, it’s still too many.

      Proportionally, where Y<0 then x will increase.
      Inversely, where x<0 then Y will increase.

      Using game theory, explain the benefit to either party of X or Y <0?

      Yep, it’s a typo in the year – the number is since 2002, as the question asked.

      Using the UN Office ochaopt.org online database if you select:

      * 2002-01-01
      * 2012-12-31
      * Deaths
      * Direct Israeli / Palestinian Conflict
      * West Bank
      * Gaza Strip
      * PAL (Casualty Identity)

      you get 3698, pretty close to the number Warsi gave.

      Trouble is, that is an understimate as the UN Office has little/no data pre-2005. You essentially get the same number since 2005 – for the dates 2005-01-01 to 2012-12-31 and the same selections the number is 3686, or 460 deaths /year on average.

        If you add the selection:

        * Done By: Israeli (All)

        to the above, and use an end date of 2013-07-29 (the day before the PQ), you get 3643, exactly the number Warsi gave.

        So this is extremely likely to be what the civil servant preparing the answer did. I wonder if the typo was from the civil servant, Hansard, or semewhere in between.

I’m broadly sympathetic to most of your entries – fellow travellers and all that – however the above post deliberately misunderstands and misrepresents both the situation and the good Baroness. You know fine well she means the period from 2002-2012. It’s a slip of the pen. If you’re position is so strong and you believe in it so much, why do you need to completely misrepresent those with opposing views (or even those with broadly similar views on Israel). The fact that you have chosen to portray it otherwise, so aggressively, makes me wonder which of your other posts I should trust and which I shouldn’t. Please enlighten me.

    Muslim untruthful in order to criticise Israel …. gosh, hold the front page!

    From a UN report about hostilities …

    “The vulnerability of Palestinian civilians was exacerbated due to the almost total absence of basic protective measures, such as warning systems and bomb shelters – available to civilians in Israel – as well as by the reported practice of Palestinian armed groups shooting from within, or in close proximity to, civilian areas.”

    Then later in the report referring to the hostilities in November 2012

    “The almost uninterrupted firing of projectiles into
    southern Israel severely disrupted the lives of about
    one million Israelis living within the 40 km, radius
    and placed many people at serious risk. The limited
    number of civilian fatalities in Israel is explained,
    primarily, by the protective measures implemented
    by the Israeli authorities in the affected areas,
    including the ‘Iron Dome’ system, the availability
    of bomb shelters in almost every residence, and an
    effective alarm system.”

    So a lot of the blame for Palestinian casualties seems to be the result of the Palestinian ‘authorities’ deliberately failing their own civilians. What a surprise!

Rob Colvile reviews Russell Brand’s new book:

“Oddly, the person I feel sorriest for isn’t Brand himself – although he certainly comes across as a rather pitiable figure, projecting his own brokenness on to the world around him – but Johann Hari. Drummed out of Fleet Street for plagiarism, the former Independent columnist has washed up as “my mate Johann, who’s been doing research for this book”. For a genuinely talented polemicist, it would have been a humbling experience to have to treat this sub-undergraduate dross as the scintillating wisdom of a philosopher-king.”
