Two days after Woolwich and the Tories are already back at it. Probably not the most opportune moment for Philip Hammond to have the suggestion he might resign as Defence Secretary and challenge Dave floated in the FT. Quitting over armed force cuts, gay marriage and Europe will set him up as the perfect candidate to oust the PM, say supporters of the thinking man’s Adam Afryie:

“Some Tories speculate that the 57-year-old Mr Hammond, who was previously considered somewhat grey and ultraloyal, might even quit rather than implement further cuts to the armed forces, setting himself up as a leader of the Tory right. His allies denounce any such suggestion as “ridiculous”, insisting that the minister is a loyalist.”

It would help if the public knew who he is…
