WATCH: Kay Burley Skewers Hodge the Dodge

Margaret Hodge got the full Kay Burley treatment this afternoon. After a day of grandstanding at her committee, she was left spluttering about her 0.01% tax bill. Hodge had the nerve to bring up the newspapers who retracted their own stories about Hodge and tax. She has never asked for a retraction from Guido for the stories that appeared on this blog, nor has she answered our questions about her family’s use of trusts…

Read Guido’s stories and unanswered questions here.

Kay makes a very valid point. If Hodge is so certain that they pay every penny of tax due (as do google by the way) how come she does not know how much profit and tax passes through their books. She’s either certain or she’s not certain.

Birley should have asked why Hodge threatened legal action on any investigation. Hiding behind being a “simple” shareholder is ridiculous in her case.

Not that simple m’Lord. Tax laws were drafted in simpler times and Google and Amazon can afford very clever tax avoidance specialists. Now you have Starbucks selling you a cup of over-priced mud and claiming they made no profit in the UK because the beans were off-shored from Belgium via Switzerland. Of course the profit is made in the same jurisdiction as the purchaser but the laws need tightening up to reflect this.

When asked how much the company earns or any financial details, which she had previously said she had researched in depth, she responds she doesn’t know she’s only a shareholder.

So does she or doesn’t she know the answer?. Either she has researched it but doesn’t want to tell us or she hasn’t bothered to research it and is just bluffing her way through. Either way she’s in the wrong!

Pity Burley both doesn’t understand that corporation tax is paid on profits not turnover and that Lady Hodge’s hypocrisy concerns not the tax affairs of her family company Stemcor but her father’s setting up a trust so that she and her siblings could retain control of Stemcor and avoid inheritance tax. As far as I am aware, Lady Hodge has not offered to repay her bit of the avoided IHT on her interest in her father’s trust. That said, and as Lord Stansted wrote further up this thread, Google (and Stemcor) arrange their tax affairs according to the law. If the politicians don’t like the effects of that law they have the power to change it.

Just when you think politics can’t get any worse, it does. Primarily, it seems, because someone had the brilliant idea of importing the US system of senatorial scrutiny of public figures. Remember that senator who tried to put the screws on George Galloway? Didn’t work out quite so well for him. I can only hope that Hodge’s comeuppance isn’t too far away.

Hodge *is* a hopeless hypocrite. If it were someone else holding shares in a company behaving in a shady manner, she would say they should sell their shares once they know the score. The fact that it’s her family’s firm means she can’t do that, but it also means she has their ear at least, even if she’s ‘not involved in the day to day business’. Stemcor is the clanking chain this faux lefty drags with her wherever she goes.
