Thatcher Tops Best PM Poll

An interesting poll for number crunchers in today’s Sun, not least because Margaret Thatcher is named as Britain’s most popular post-war PM. Dave scored a grand total of zero percent, suffering the indignity of coming behind Alec Douglas-Home. Tony Blair won three elections for the Labour Party but only 21% of Labour supporters felt he was the best post-war PM. Also notable that only 18 percent of Tories went for Churchill compared to 25%, 28% and 36% of Labour, LibDem and UKIP supporters respectively. The winner is clear…

Those results in full.

Does anyone ever wonder why it is that socialism when pushed far enough to become a totalitarian dictatorship has enormous problems making enough cars, clothes, fuel, finding engineers and businessmen to run things…. yet one thing they’re never short of is wonderfully enlightened people to work in re-education camps torturing people with pliers or further the socialist revolution by working in the death camps? One look at the twisted, hate-filled faces here glorying in someone’s death and you can see where such people come from:

Churchill was a great coalition prime minister but when he became a Conservative Prime Minister he was a shadow of his former self: even more of a chairman of the board than Attlee, a figurehead, not a leader. Hence his comparatively low showing among Conservatives.

The Left have still to reflect on why Margaret Thatcher was able to win in 1979. Was it just due to her determination to bring about changes, or was it helped by intellectual and political vacuum of Lefty ideas which allowed closed shops, intimidation of flying pickets, open strike votes at mass meetings with a show of hands. The power cuts, the unburied dead, the uncollected refuse, the high rates of income tax and a bloated inefficient public sector didn’t act as great adverts for socialism Labour style.

Add on the inflation of 24% during Wilson’s Premiership, and it isn’t hard to work out why voters elected Thatcher, not once, but three times.

Very well done, genghis. Labour have done a very good job of re-writing history, in that politically, the ’70′s never happened. Those students celebrating The Baroness’ demise did so with no context as to why she was elected not once but three times. Their show of hatred is similar to that of children dancing round the bonfire on Nov 5, with about as much understanding of the event. We remember, and the greatness of her legacy to our Nation is in the hands of old gits like us to keep alive.

Of course, many of the same people who hate and revile Margaret Thatcher and believe she was Satan incarnate (though they cannot even recall back to that time, being too young), also think Winston Churchill is a dog who sells automobile insurance. How much stock do you put in polls where a goodly number of those responding probably don’t even recognise many of the names– sure, Clement Attlee and Anthony Eden come up in the average person’s conversation all the time, right? And even if they know them just as names, akin to say, “Wat Tyler,” how many can recall the times in which those men served? I’m well past my first blush of youth, and I can only recall back to Macmillan, and only barely at that. I wouldn’t feel qualified to know about and express a view of Eden and Attlee except for what I’ve read– which is really all these young idiots know of Baroness Thatcher, innit?

Does no one remember how he introduced the 10p tax rate (and then scrapped it a year later)?

Does no one remember how he introduced the 50p tax rate several weeks before being defeated at the general election, just so Labour could then blame the tories for letting the rich off the hook when they reduced it to 45p.

    • 99

Does no one remember how Gordon’s 50p tax rate actually reduced the tax take? Labour make the poor poorer so that the rich can be less rich, one of the Baroness’ better quotes.

Cathy Jamieson MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury minister, commenting on Treasury analysis of the economic impact of tax changes…

“If the Treasury is looking at the economic impact of tax changes, then surely it should examine the impact of the rise in VAT and cuts to tax credits? George Osborne’s £12 billion VAT rise knocked confidence, helped to choke off the recovery and has cost families £1,350 over the last three years.”
