Labour Blows £150,000 of Taxpayers’ Cash to Help Out Pals

Ed BallsEven in opposition, Ed Balls is still finding ways to waste taxpayers’ money. New figures show a group of senior Labour MPs have claimed £151,474 on expenses paid to Gordon and Badley Communications, a PR firm run by two party acolytes. Fiona Gordon is the partner of Labour MP Steve McCabe and was the Prime Mentalist’s political secretary, Caroline Badley was a party press officer. Guido wonders how many other non-Labour affiliated PR firms were considered.

The 16 senior Labour MPs using taxpayer cash to help out their old pals include Balls, Yvette Cooper, Liam Byrne, Jon Cruddas, Tom Watson, Bridget Phillipson, Diana Johnson, Emma Reynolds, Gisela Stuart, Ian Austin, Jack Dromey, Julie Hilling, Khalid Mahmood, Lyn Brown, Robert Flello and Shabana Mahmood. Cronyism plain and simple…

Stealing money isn’t wrong so long as you say you’re a socialist. That’s a basic tenet of the EU and all its affiliates.

Actually you don’t have to say that it is wrong, socialism by definition is “everything you own is mine and everything I own is mine” At least at the top that is true! The other one is of course “do as I say not as I do!” Which in Balls case and et al his compatriots clearly the case!

      Dave said M'Lud says:

The final reason we must have a vote is trust. Gordon Brown talks about “new” politics. But there’s nothing “new” about breaking your promises to the British public. It’s classic Labour. And it is the cancer that is eating away at trust in politics. Small wonder that so many people don’t believe a word politicians ever say if they break their promises so casually. If you really want to signal you’re a break from the past, Prime Minister, do the right thing – give the people the referendum you promised.

Today, I will give this cast-iron guarantee: If I become PM a Conservative government will hold a referendum on any EU treaty that emerges from these negotiations. No treaty should be ratified without consulting the British people in a referendum.

        EU Watch says:

The move above, particularly the language about removing freedom of fiscal management from member states is VERY significant.

This is going against the 1950 Schuman declaration upon which post war European cooperation is broadly based.

It should also be read as: Fiscal union by decree.

Even though the wording appears to apply only to countries who have adopted the Euro, one suspects that it would apply to all EU member states.

This would be a trojan for usurping fiscal control of the UK / Norway / Switzerland by Brussels.

Removal of freedom of states to manage their affairs as laid out in Schuman is a necessary step for federalization.

        EU Watch says:

That revised agreement is already out of date.

What they do not get is that the Junior bond holders in Cyprus are still going to get a 100% haircut and interest on savings will be subject to 25% levy.

Cypriot pensioners were encouraged to put money into bank bonds a few years back when interest rates were cut down to 1%. The revised deal does not change that problem.

Also: The Greek archbishop is advocating exit euro. Significant as church is a major force on the island, and controls one of the banks which is not in trouble.

Nothing happens until Cypriot parliament votes, and Gazpr0m are likely to come back with a better counter offer.

        The Parliamentary breakdown:

Anastasiades (President) party ΔΗΣΥ: 20 seats
        ΔΗΚΟ (DIKO) (coalition party): 8
        ΑΚΕΛ (AKEL): 19
        ΕΔΕΚ (EDEK): 5
        Greens: 1
        ΕΥΡΩΚΟ (EUROKO): 2
        Independent: 1

Coalition only has 28 seats, 29 required for majority in house of 56.

Coalition was voted in on manifesto pledge that tax on deposits would not even be discussed, let alone haggled over with the Troika.

!taly has been openly discussed as next in line.

For GDP reduction, !reland will have largest exposure if 30% reduction on Cyprus successful, so would logically be next.

Spa!n should not have much to worry about, but with the change to property law forced their the problems they experienced a few years back could return in force. Span!sh bonds are already yielding ~6%

Spending others hard earned cash..its the Socialist way

    Breaking the Next Taboo

And now comes the partial expropriation of bank customers. The move is little more than a symbolic contribution to solving the Cyprus crisis, but it sends an important message: For Europe’s taxpayers, it is a question of fairness that they not be left alone to bear the burdens of the costs of the crisis. And it is the only way to prevent the euro crisis from further fomenting anti-EU sentiment in the member states. (UK)

For the people of Europe it is a question of fairness. For the politicians seeking to end the crisis, it is one of pragmatism. Taxpayers alone will not be able to buy Europe out of its debt trap. And those who want to solve the problems in the euro zone need to access the money where it can be found: through bondholders, through the ECB, through banking customers and, hopefully, as a next step through the owners of troubled banks, as well as wealthy people living in Southern Europe.

The next taboo-breaking measures are already taking shape on the horizon. Spain is soon expected to use billions in guarantees from the long-term euro rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to rescue its flagging banks. It will be crucial that the shareholders and creditors of these banks also be drawn into the bailout. Italy could also relieve some of its debt problems if the government finally took the step of implementing a wealth tax that would require the country’s richest to contribute to solving the crisis.

Fearing that tapping any of these potential sources of money could have disastrous consequences on the financial markets, many in the past have argued they should be categorically ruled out. But each time that position has proven untenable.

So git yer cash out while you can!
