Wrong. There is a huge difference between the Conservatives and UKIP.

UKIP wants to leave the EU. Cameron does not.

Do you believe there will be an In/Out referendum in 2017? Cameron last year told his MPs to vote against the vote on a referendum on this parliament. He is said on record that he does not want to leave the EU.

Cameron is happy to give £12 billion in overseas aid.

      Cameron is pro Gay marriage.

I could forgive SOME of that if he was only showing a modicum of competence in running the country.

Regrettably, he really meant it when describing himself as ‘heir to Blair’. He continues his hero’s self-regarding concern for tomorrow’s headlines rather than the longer-term interests of the country, thus avoiding confrontation with the ‘tough choices’ which he is forever blethering on about and always dodging.

It is probably not worth speculating on who out of UKIP / Lib Dem will win tonight, but which of the LibLabCon parties running have lost the least credibility during the course of this campaign ?

    i) Labour: Candidate who supports terrorism and sympathized with the Argentine’s in the Falklands.

ii) Lib Dems: Should be thoroughly discredited by now on nearly every conceivable level. One important level for Eastleigh being the decision to concrete over some very nice parts of town with housing estates, apparently for an influx of foreigners.

iii) Conservatives: Kept candidate hidden, showing that those running this campaign do not want a candidate who does express core conservative values running.

Notable also is what appears to be a complete lack of appeal to local issues, particularly the housing development and how exactly any of these candidates plan to bring jobs into the area.

Am not sure any of these three are really taking this by-election seriously, however Labour may lose the least credibility, Conservatives the most.

If UKIP do not win, any -ve press deriding them is unlikely to cut much ice as they seem to be the only party who have taken this by-election seriously.

One thing they have shown, which is important, is that there is more to UKIP than just Nigel. That is probably the most important takeaway for the broader electorate.

Some Tweets are indicating that the polling stations appear to be very busy, which suggests there could be a good turnout. That despite apparent ‘voter fatigue': aka. Shameless propaganda attempt to dissuade people from voting.

The postal vote accounts received accounted for about 11% it was reported the other day.

If Tories come behind UKIP, stealing their colours on the pamphlet today may be very difficult to explain. But at least they didn’t shout out ‘vote UKIP’ in the HoC. (Anyone figure out which Labour MP did that yet ?)

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/us-eu-bonus-london-idUSBRE91R0HK20130228

Direct government interference in wage setting is dangerous territory. There is a justification for minimum wage setting, but beyond that it is very murky and smacks of communism. The private sector should be allowed to set wage levels independently of government.

The left of course are making this out to be Cameron defending the bankers. After the 50% rate was introduced, a large chunk of Mayfair (Hedge Funds) relocated to Switzerland, and have not returned. The effect of this will motivate staff currently based in London to relocate.

The US has relaxed its H1B visa quotas recently, and NY would not say no to some of the good talent in London which wished to relocate there.

Furthermore this reinforces the fact that since 2011 the UK has had pretty much zero influence in EU matters.

Ken Loach likes dysfunctional poor people, but not dysfunctional rich people. he’s made his fame and fortune out of this interest. He is of course an ideological Trotskyite, not a statist. He is also somewhat prejudiced about how and why people are the way they are.

For example, he seems to think, like so many Trots, that other people have privilege because they inherit it. But he does not seem to have understood that what people inherit are genes which express as their behaviours. He doesn’t seem to have grasped that people have no choice in this matter either. Fairness is largely about coming to recognise this and manage it. I watch his films to see the workings of a deluded man’s ‘mind’.

        Ken says:

“I would like to ask those colleagues who have knelt before the Queen at some point in their lives: really, what are you doing?

“You don’t want to be in there with the fraudsters, the tricksters and the knaves.

“And the woman you are kneeling before represents most of what is wrong with this country – inherited privilege and inherited wealth. Let’s have a bit more dignity than crawling before that woman, please.”

If you are going to learn one thing here, learn that Trots are self-serving anarchists, and that their fundamental error is to ignore or worse, abuse the complex fact that people are largely as they are not by choice, but by genetics.

The state obliterates the individual in either case.

No one who likes the state to be all powerful can possibly relish the concept of a monarchy, even a constitutional one.

For those many who do not think that way, the monarch represents a safeguard and our Queen is the best monarch we have ever had.

Day after day we see what’s left of the state being privatised or undermined first by New Labour and now by the Conservatives and the Liberal-Democracts. Can you see that?

            Like

          • JadedJean says:

Please try to grasp that fascism and national socialism are left-wing. Just a little research into their origins will show you that this is true. The right-wing is anarchistic, i.e. minimal government, no state. Thatcher was right-wing. The Tories are right-wing. The Lib-dems are right-wing. New Labour are right-wing.

Under Fascism and National Socialism (and Socialism in One Country in the old USSR and PRC today) the state controls corporations. It does not take a hands off approach (deregulation) with respect to industry/businesses as liberal-democracies do. It does the opposite. The National Socialists in Germany were fighting anarchism – Trotskyism is anarchism. Je w ish Anarchists were sent into Russia in 1917 to topple the Tsar to get Russia out of WWI. The Je ws they were after were anarchists. Make sure you understand that libertarians are anarchists. Stalin changed Russian communism/anarchism to Socialism in One Country, which was like Old Labour! Read some of the Webb’s book. Sidney Webb drafted Clause IV of teh Labour Party. He was a Fabian. Think NHS, British Rail, BA, Royal Mail, Gas Board, Coal Board, state education etc and you get the idea of GOSPLAN. Think of the BoE and you have GOSBANK! Think The Civil Service and you have The Party.

Disagree with your first point. We live in an elective dictatorship that resembles more an oligarchy than a parliamentary democracy. Both parties might attempt to appear right-wing because they need some of the middle and slightly right of centre to prevail. The common method now is to reach out to their opponents territory for the first half of a parliament and risk alienating their own but then in the approach to re-election, try and regain the ground with their own natural base of support. They both do it but in opposite directions.

I do understand you are a statist and, although I disagree profoundly with your objectives, I respect your honesty in admitting it. It is natural that you should look on all these parties as right-wing because of what I have set out above.

Whilst I am not quite Attila the Hun, I look on them all as left wing. The explanation of both our views is one of perspective.

I travelled to the old USSR more than once and understand what you are saying but I do not equate the main swathe of Libertarianism with anarchism although some strains may seem that way. My previous writings here and elsewhere have allowed for regulation of a minimal level which is totally different to the “light touch” introduced in 1997. My rule is similar to Ockham’s Razor. It incorporates the concept of not regulating “beyond necessity”. The key word here is necessity. It will take too long to refine here. New Labour used “light touch” as a bribe to industry. If your case was that there is an unholy, if sometimes uncomfortable, alliance between state and big business, then I would agree with you.

My youth and early working life was spent in the shadow of chronically inefficient and corrupt state industries. Had they not been changed, I can assure you that we would not be conversing like this now.

Clause IV was my main sticking point with the old Labour party. When Blair had it changed, I could see it was just a sticking plaster of the sort he was very good at. But it was just that.

He is/was a right wing shill in socialist guise. In the build up of the credit bubble and then the following bank bailouts he allowed the profits to be privatised and then the losses to be socialised. Socialism for the rich alone.

Liberatrians are liberal (pro individual rights over societal responsibilities). The clue is in the name. Pro LBGT rights over the sanctity of heterosexual marriage and the natural family.

The right-wing part of the label relates to his economic principles i.e. pro free-market (neocon), laissez-faire (think capping of bankers bonuses) regulation, economic anarchism (anarchism means without rule). Just think of all the business types that turn up on R4’s Today programme that harp on about restrictive regulation. Neil Hamilton is banging on about it now on QT re the bakners. Cameron says he will be tough on immigration whereas his actions belie hi words as immigration has increased. This is because more people are good for growth and good for profits. This makes him right-wing.

The City doesn’t keep the country afloat.

We, the taxpayers, have bailed out the City to the tune of one and a half trillion pounds.

In the last thirty years the City of London didn’t pay tax anywhere near that amount and in any case all the tax they did pay was stolen from us all in the first place as interest.

The City of London produce nothing.

Indeed, it could be easily argued that by creating money out of thin air they actually force up the price of important basics like the price of a home. This has caused millions to not be able to get on the ladder and left millions more working for forty years to afford a home.

And by gambling on the international markets in commodities they force up the price of essentials like bread. This has led indirectly to riots across the world and most likely here too if things don’t improve.

The Banking sector and the City of London are a national disgrace. They have been proven to be profiting from the drug trade in South America and rigging the LIBOR rate and countless other examples of fraud on the ordinary man, woman and small business.

      Quite!

In 2009 and 2010, the British financial industry received an implicit taxpayer subsidy of up to £220bn. That would have paid for the NHS in those two years. In 2010 City bonuses totalled £14bn.

The Bank of England has printed £375bn via QE, the effect of which has seen the wealth of the top 10pc increase by an average of £322,000 each.

Banks have been involved in scams that would make the mafia blush, including Libor and PPI.

British banks built up balance sheets several times bigger than UK GDP in the boom. The British financial industry built up debt of 200pc of GDP.

If bankers think they can get a cushier deal in Dubai, Shanghai or Singapore, let them.

I don’t think they’ll find those governments so generous when they inevitably run out of other people’s money.

Banks do not create money out of thin air. You have been listening to the positive money crackpots for too long. Individual banks cannot lend more than they have on deposit. The redepositing of this money in other banks does expand the money supply. This then falls when the loan is repaid. And the money supply falls more when the loan is defaulted on.

Also, the 1.5 trillion is a guarantee and not a payment. It’s like insurance. And the banks are paying the government for it.

In the last thirty years the City of London didn’t pay tax anywhere near that amount and in any case all the tax they did pay was stolen from us all in the first place as interest.

WELL THEY PAID 20% OF TAXES. SO A LOT.

The City of London produce nothing.

THE ROLE OF THE CITY OF LONDON IS TO ALLOCATE RESOURCES. THEY BRING TOGETHER MONEY AND INVESTMENTS.

Indeed, it could be easily argued that by creating money out of thin air they actually force up the price of important basics like the price of a home. This has caused millions to not be able to get on the ladder and left millions more working for forty years to afford a home.

MONEY IS NOT CREATED OUT OF THIN AIR. IT IS YOUR DEPOSITS WHICH ARE LENT OUT. MAYBE YOU WOULD PREFER TO GET ZERO INTEREST AND TO LEAVE YOUR MONEY IN A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX. ME I PREFER TO GET INTEREST (ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT MUCH RIGHT NOW)

And by gambling on the international markets in commodities they force up the price of essentials like bread. This has led indirectly to riots across the world and most likely here too if things don’t improve.

NOPE THAT WAS THE YANKS CONVERTING THEIR ARABLE LAND TO BIOETHANOLL AND SO DECREASING THE AMOUNT AVAILABLE FOR FOOD. ALL IN THE NAME OF GLOBAL WARMING.

“Individual banks cannot lend more than they have on deposit.”

        No, you are wrong!

It’s not called fractional reserve banking for no meaning. Banks lend money according to to their Tier 1 capital ratios and other (mark to fantasy) assets that were completely made up leadin up to the crash. Unfortunately, in the bending of the rules beyond the Basel II, captial ratios were completely distorted and banks WERE effectively creating money out of thin air. Anyone with a pulse was being foisted with loans and mortgages which in some cases were 125% of the asset value at purchase.

This is reason that the universal banks are extremely reluctant to be split along investment and retail banking lines…as it is the retail arms that reperesent the Golden Goose that lays the eggs (i.e. the money creation aspect) for the investment arms to use as gambling chips (via their prop trading desks) in the stock market casinos.

YOU need to do a bit more homework sonny!
