‘It is regertable that these allegations were not investigated at the time nor subsequently put through presrcibed grievance procedures or in that case of criminal behaviour, why they were not reported to the Police at the time? The unfortunate women involved clearly feared for their POLITICAL careers and chose to keep quiet on to whom the advice of ever they complained at the time, rather than properly escalating the issue.’

Sorry, Rennard may well be a dirty old fecker but why has it taken 4 years for these victims to come forwar?. He’s hardly Al Capone. If he sexually hararssed them then there are proper procedures to follow and bugger the consequences. What is more important, your minor political aspirations or a life scarring event that festers for years or a criminal assault which, in the intersts of future potential victims should have been reported?
Let’s hear some proper allegations and reasons why they have taken so long to be made before we allow this to dominate more important news…like losing our AAA crdeit rating that by coincidence seemed to happen at much the same time….of and also the Eastleigh Election.

If it were news every time a women who was groped at some office do and dominated the news for days, that would be all that were in the news. Difference is, most of these women would knee the dirty fecker in the groin, go to the police, go to thier union or start grievance procedures. There is always a way even if you are given advice to keep quiet. If it is that bad, you don’t keep quiet, you shout out, name names, cause trouble and don’t look back.

This is because we can, no matter what others may think. We have a voice, male or female and the longer we keep quiet, the less credible we are. If nothing else comes of this let it be that if you are assaulted, sexually compromised etc for the sake of your job then speak out loudly and straight away.

!taly will hopefully calm, unless the left decide to kick off. Spa!n, P0rtugal, Gr3ece and !reland will be looking with interest, and there could be some anti-austerity protests big time very soon.

His ruling passion and the other desires that take hold alongside it will need financing. He will spend all of his income, then his capital, and then he will rob people. He will also take his parents’ estate, by fraud or violence if need be. His passion will drive him to do anything, and his former ideas of honour and dishonour will be no restraint. If there are many people like this in a society, it will turn into a tyranny, as the criminals pick a leader and the people in their folly submit to him. The tyrannical character will be the perfect specimen of injustice.

Everyone who studies philosophy struggles with it. I would suggest that, if you didn’t struggle with it, there would be something wrong with you. You are reacting as I would expect any serious student of the subject to.

My wish is that I had studied it professionally. Instead, I became interested some 30 years ago and just read through the complete corpus of first-rank writers, slowly and painfully, often wondering why the hell I was reading it. Then I attended conferences and took a quantum step forward. I began to see things through others’ eyes.

One thing I have discovered: The more I learn, the less I know. I find that curiously comforting.

Although, in hindsight, I did quite a lot of whistle blowing and never got caught for it. It was all about how you did it. Where I got caught was through mandated union action. A lot of damage was done, and my motivation at the time was wasting tax payers money (no, really). I was fighting a political NU-Lab ‘Imperative’ which, whatever way you viewed, it was expensive, unnecessary and pandering politically to the EU (or specifically the French). We won in court but years later I was taken down over a technicality. I still don’t regret the fight we put up, even though untimately we lost because we lacked the funds to go to appeal. By this stage the Union were no longer funding (they have a cut off amount) but the members themselves. The opposing department employed a QC to fight us. We had already spent hundreds of thousands of or own money and couldn’t afford to put up in the court of appeal against a QC. So the tax payer paid the price that we were trying to save them.

I moved on but that particular case never left me. I will never regret what we tried to do, no natter what it cost me in the end. Always be willing to fight where you see or exerience wrong being done. In the end I got hammered but it took years before they found a way and as I said, I would still do the same again.

Needless to say, when they offered voluntary redundancy, I as out of there. I may be jobless now and seeking one of these public sector jobs Gideon assured us would be out there, but whatever, I know that when compromised, I fought back, swiftly and credibly and would not raise issues gone by unless they became a political imperative again (in which case I stored all DPA and FOI requests…LOL)

History of philosophy is another good route in. Russell’s History of Western Philosophy has a huge sweep and is excellent from the ancients to the German idealists but falls away very badly at the approach of the 20th century. You will find that some will scoff at this sort of book but I found it an excellent primer and roadmap to the subject. Looking around the press in Europe a common theme which is uniting people within their own countries at present is discontent with corruption they now see in public office.

Curiously that unity is also uniting people against the EU and pushing them towards nationalism.

Intrigued by what flavor you could have been currying with the French, or how that could be a good thing. Not a request for detail.

I do recall that Ch!rac and Bla!r used to spar elegantly.

The spat which started in 2002 over Bla!rs criticism of French farm subsidies which led Ch!rac to try and undermine Bla!r in Europe is good example. Ch!rac interfered with Germany, tried and failed to oppose !raq (freedom fries in US ?), and humiliatingly had to back down in the face of Cheney.

This showed Bla!rs deft touch as a statesman.

Ch!rac, wise and cunning but did look beaten when the French referendum of 2005 voted down by 55% the treaty for the European constitution.

The EU was going to go ahead regardless, but Bla!r sagely counselled no. Str@w cancelled the UK referendum, they repackaged the thing as Lisbon and Br0wn signed that against all advice.

This also ignores Cher!e Bla!rs attacks on Ch!rac which arguably helped the UK win the 2012 Olympic bid. Even though in hindsight one must think that the French were very pleased with that result.

Only mention that as am trying to figure where currying favor with the French fits in with nu-Lab. :-)

These would likely not reflect change of voting intention due to C4 Rennard coverage. A sizable number would have been made before the discharge of the previous Pryce jury.

To compare the by-elections of Nov 2012:

Rotherham: ~50% of total votes cast were postal votes, with turnout ~33%.

The issue with the French was regarding borders not an offciall secret was sangatte sitiuation and what we traded off. It would have been cheaper just to have taken those asylum seekers and left it at that, not traded it off for new legislation which in it’s fullest sense is not in the public domain as far as I am aware.
I say this because subsequent questions were asked in the house (and I must explaiin here that it by then it involved the Belgians as well) about flaws in the legislation which we had flagged and were ignored which as far as I know, up untill 2011 were still causing a problem of national security. The Lib Dems (Ed Davey at the time as ‘shadow foreign sec’ fpr LDs) flagged the question and was put down with a crass answer from Chris Bryant, European minister at the time and completely ignorant, it seemed that France and Belgium were actaully different countries. It was pitifful but such is the procedure of debates, Bryant rubbished the question that the matter had been resloved and that legislation was in place that covered Calais???? Calais is in France, the question was passengers embarking in Belgium but as Bryant was summing up, his geographical ignorance was never challenged so Mr Davey’s question remained unaddressed .It was known as the ‘Lille Loophole’ and was a way of entering the UK bypassing any checks, passport, customs. or special branch. Without going into detail, it is recorded in Hansard
My Davey had done his homework on the issue. Chris Bryant still had problems identifying France from Belgium. I am not aware of whether some deal with the Belgians has been made to resolve the problem. The ‘Calais’ issue which Chris Bryant was aware of was a trade off for taking the Sangatte asylum seekers. Last I heard we had no such offer for the Belgians regarding the problems of passengers embarking in Brussels with tickets to Lille (i.e. within the Schengen area) and not disembarkimng until London. This remained a problem until I left the service in 2011.
Ed Davey did his best to get this flaw in security addressed but such was the Nu-Lab imperative to set up ‘juxatposed controls’ that such issues were ignored. AN FOI question now about how many have illegally entered the UK using this method would be interesting. I did all I could to highlight the issue at the time and subsequently regularly saw that what had been predicted, so had become true. It was a worry from a security point of view. I am no longer paid to care.
Although I still do. As an immigration issue, it was minor compared with what arrives in the backs of lorries. From a national security issue it is a worry. Only the Lib Dems cared about this threat and were put down by a man that didn’t know Belgium and France were different countries.

  267. 267
    Not Blowing Whistles says:

That makes sense. Cheers, I shall do some digging in Hansard.

Numbers of illegal people entering is one interesting question. Illegal firearms and other contraband including undocumented children is much more interesting.

From the perspective of people and child sex trafficking (UK is a known endpoint, Holland / Belgium notorious transits), in these enlightened times the geographical ignorance is incredible.

The Lille loophole sounds like a gift to true. One hopes that someone from our side was keeping an eye on that side, but even so, to your point much would have slipped through.

Statement from Nick Dregg, the Deputy Slime Minister

The allegations made on Channel 4 about the Lib Dems ever having any electable policies last Thursday were extremely serious and distressing to all involved.

But I would like to make one thing crystal clear. I did not know about any Lib Dem policies until Channel 4 informed the party of them shortly before they were broadcast.

I am angry and outraged at the suggestion that the Lib Dems ever published a coherent, useful or popular policy. Indeed, when indirect and non-specific policies reached my Office in 2008, we acted to deal with them.

I totally reject the insidious suggestion that my office or I are responsible in any way for a deliberate policy on anything.

In the meantime, I will not stand by and allow my party to be shown to be effective or popular and will endeavour to see it sink in a show trial of innuendo, half-truths and slurs.

The important thing is that we respect any lunatics who have come forward and do everything to run away from real life. That is what will now happen.

The person who told the British Officers to try and unlawfully intercept Schengen passengers also gave permission to the French PAF to carry firearms in the UK without even consulting Special Branch Officers working in the same area. The residents of Dover, for example, were never aware that armed French Police were strolling around their patch on the say so of a fairly minor Civil Servant who then went on to overlook the whole Lille Loophole and the subsequent arrest threats from the Belgians. French speaking colleagues, whom this manager used to use as an interpreters, reported back that they had to leave meetings as what she wanted them to say to high ranking French Officials, was so offensive that they couldn’t carry on. The lack of diplomacy left the UK with no choice but to agree to whatever the French wanted (like taking all the asylum seekers at Sangatte, for e.g.). If the Border had remained in the UK and the Carriers Liability Act enforced on Eurostar and Eurotunnel as it was on every other airline and ferry compnay, then none of this would ever have happened. In the late 90s, Waterloo International saw more asylum seekers arrive than any other port in the UK, peaking at sometimes 100 per day. All past history now, but all covered up so as not to jeopodise the whole channel tunnel operation. At the time, the initial legal aid bill per asylum seeker was 10K. Do the maths. You were the tax payers that paid that legal aid bill. All that would have stopped if Eurostar had been required, like any other carrier, to check that someone travelling to the UK was properly documented. Other carriers paid millions in fines under the Carriers Liability Act. Eurostar briefly had it imposed for services from Brussels (for complicated schengen related reasons) and it worked, but the ball to move the controls overseas was already moving. It was Blairs baby and nothing would stop it thriving. The brief sucess of the CLA imposition on the Belgian end proved that if it had been applied across the channel tunnel operations then all loopholes would have been closed. Instead the tax payer spent a fortune on moving the controls abroad and whilst the deluge stopped on paper, no one ever knew what slipped through and the cost of keeping British Staff in apartments in Paris and brussels was immense.

They were so, so desperate to get these juxtaposed controls in place they would have agreed to bloody anything.

And as I said, only Ed Davey and a few years previously, Humphrey Mallins, attempted to ask questions. And Mr Underpants Bryant, who could have taken action, chose instead to not bother to look at a map of Europe and decided that Paris and Calais were in the same country as Belgium.
