David Ward MP Pictured With Swastika on His Own Website

The BBC is now running the story that David Ward has been condemned by the LibDems for his Holocaust comments. He has now deleted them from his website. A spokesperson for the party tells Guido that the matter will be dealt with internally. This photo, published on Ward’s own website next to the party logo, will hardly help matters…

The reason he is saying this is because a large percent of his constituents are muslim. If the boundary changes are approved, he will have to fight his seat with Galloway; if not, then he will have a tough election still as respect have a lot of support on the east..

Not wanting to defend the guy but the Swastika was a symbol used by a number of cultures before the Nazis – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika Given the people pictured above I suspect it is less than sinister.

It looks like its a protest, something to do with “ethnic cleansing” by the looks of those words, and the flag seems to be Burma.

Someone else in that photo has a banner saying “stop this holocaust in Burma”.

So unless one is really upset by comparing Burma with Nazis, its a non starter.

      BOLLOCKS.

Actually, not. It seems that Ward is comfortable making comparisons between modern states and Nazism. Therefore, his comments about Israel and the holocaust become more serious, not less.

Even if that modern state was doing things like banning certain ethnic groups from owning land, travelling, and trying to stop them having children.

How unfair to call them nazis.

See other comment at 12:57 pm below. That’s another mouthy cow of the darker complexion who should be taken about as seriously as Oprah Winfrey should be taken, about anything. I mean, a HUMAN byproduct being used for cosmetics? Who collects them– the doctors who perform the operations, and charge the parents for doing so, and then turn around and sell the things? Sounds like a racket to me. Ask Oprah what she thinks about genital mutilation of females in (*ahem*) “certain communities”– see what she tells you. La Winfrey–yet another illustration that some people are willing to believe any old shite just because some bint on the telly tells them to. Saves them the headache of thinking.

Can have a pop at him over this use of the symbol.

It was oriented at 45 degrees, as it was by the NSRD.

For the tradition meaning relating to creation and enlightenment and sun gods, the symbol should be kept level. Also best not to color it black, or put it anywhere near a red background – that signifies socialism.

The meaning isn’t clear. Either way, the intent is highly provocative and possibly not best for an M.P. to be associated with.

And, in fact, the association in the photo makes his comments about Israel and the holocaust appear worse.

        Symbol Watch says:

Have not seen the un-cropped photo.

The symbol is most important: This does not require any understanding of language to get a message across.

Am assuming this was some sort of peace protest against ethnic cleansing ?

If the symbol had been oriented correctly, colored anything but black there would be no ambiguity in this context.

Using the symbol without ambiguity to protest against ethnic cleansing is a valid use, if there is any relevance at all with respect the beliefs of the people who are protesting. Perhaps connected to Burma ? If so, the Buddhist use is valid, but the symbol should not be oriented at 45 degrees and it may have been wiser to use the left facing version.

If the intent was to associate the protest event with events which occurred in Europe, then whoever created the placard should have a serious rethink as the protesters have just destroyed their case.

This looks like a protest flag against the alleged ethnic cleansing in Burma by the Buddhists against the Muslims in Rakhine. Looks like the Burma flag.

In this context, the symbol is a criticism of the Buddhists in Burma: drawing attention to the similarity of the Buddhist regime to the Nazis, through the similarity of their symbols.

I would expect David Ward to attend as it may be of some importance to his Muslim constituents.

This is a protest about killings in Burma – The swastika is present in it’s eastern context and meaning (as it can be seen all over south east asia) and has nothing to do with nazism.

The slightest bit of research would have told you this. Presenting it in such a manner as you have here is misleading, negligent, cheap and sensationalist, and places this blog on a par with the shabbiest of tabloids. My respect for this blog has decreased markedly.
