If and when “mentoring” is done diligently and well, it is worth every penny spent, because the failure rate lowers – it’s just like putting an experienced pilot in as co-pilot for a less experienced one – and to follow that analogy – it is far better to have paid the price for having a seasoned co-pilot that subsequently you didn’t need, than the opposite.
