How Wind Farm Owners Are Ripping Us Off
A great piece of digging coming up in this week’s Speccie. Green businesses have been taking part in a scam known as ‘de-rating’, deliberately producing less energy than they are capable of in order to cash in on disincentivising government subsidies. With low-energy wind turbines given almost double the subsidy of their high-power alternatives in order to encourage new businesses to enter the market, owners of giant wind farms have been running their turbines at half capacity so they can trouser the top rate.
DECC are aware of the scam but have yet to do anything about it…

If we force free marketing, go for cheap energy and an open and transparent system we can cut by half.

Here’s how farming generally works for you and the landed classes:

As you can see, benefits, er, I mean, subsidies, are essential for people who own land, as without the money the land would evaporate. It’s hard work, surveying all that you own, y’know.

and as a farmer you’ve no business rates, subsidised diesel, no VED on farm vehicles, privileged planning permits for house building, inheritance tax benefits
you then pay a tax accountant (tax-farmer), with the tax-payers money to book accounting losses whilst assuring the revenue that you are, prospectively, profitable
then you send out the wife to ‘work’ and offset your ‘losses’ against tax she (perish the thought) might have paid
PLUS the solar panel site (paid for regressively by lower income groups)and the wind farms
all this and more because – you say – you can’t stand on your own 3 feet

Bollocks. I’ve stood on a hilltop in Crete and the wind was so strong that I had to cling to the trig point to remain standing. The wind turbines on neighbouring hills were merrily whizzing round quite happily.

Windmills in the Shetlands are almost self sustaining, and will be in a few years with better technology.
Everywhere else they lose money..well, lose money for us. The owners make a mint.

Not just windfarms.
Since the 1950s there have been very successful hydro electric schemes in Scotland. When the equipment came up for renewal they installed smaller generators in order to get the top rate usually reserved for small schemes. We get less electricity generated. They get more money!
It is the job of private companies to make money by any legal means necessary. A pity nobody working for the state thinks it is THEIR job to get value for taxpayers’ money.
They didn’t install smaller generators. They simply turned down what they had.
