£90,000-a-year Communication Workers’ Union fat cat Billy Hayes managed to boost his salary by another £29,580 this year by converting backdated unused annual leave into cash. Normally annual leave must be taken in the period it is due but Hayes has been able to accumulate unused leave over twelve years and write himself a five-figure cheque. Furious CWU members have written to union bosses accusing Hayes, who seems to earn so much he has lost count, of “deliberate abuses of the union’s money”.
They also claim the CWU’s pension schemes are haemorrhaging money and have left the union “on the verge of a financial meltdown”. Not exactly what you call performance-related pay…

Just to try and clarify, the term fat cat is being used here in a colloquial sense, yes?
Can someone explain the logic of benefit caps; families are capped at £500 while singles are £350. Problem are
1) people will separate and claim £850 a week
2) how can a family of 3, 4 or 5 live on £500 a week if singles can claim £350 a week.
I think cap for single people should be reduced to £150 a week. Hope people don’t challenge it as it seems it favours gays more that straight people as there is more chance straight people will live as a family.
Cap it at 100 copies of the big issue and a tarpaulin

This actually could be illegal under the working time directive.

workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks paid annual leave every year. This includes bank holidays. Employers can buy out annual leave but this is strictly regulated. I think 12 days is the limit and you cannot roll over annual leave.
So I think his union does not know the regulations concerning the working time directive or has broken them. An employment lawyer could correct them.
We should look at the small print of any future RM deal – will it include a slush fund bailout for the CW Union pension fund?
As we saw with Labour, they were criminally adept at funnelling taxpayer cash to the Unions.
Why no-one has been prosecuted on the Labour benches for corruption in public office I do not know – probably the Tories are at it also in some way so do not want to rock the boat.
We are all in this together, and so long as the taxpayer is footing the bill then that’s the way it will stay.
And the Unions wonder why membership is declining.
This sort of behaviour needs to be widely reported to union members.

Employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks of holiday a year. This includes 28 days for a 5 day a week worker and can include bank holidays. According to the law only 1.6 weeks of annual leave, equating to 8 days can be carried over. You cannot agree to carry over more than 1.6 weeks of the statutory minimum according to EU Law. If you give more than 5.6 weeks, any leave above the minimumcan be carried over. (reproduced from sunday times, answer given by Peninsula Law)
So I think the union will need to check it records to see if it has broken the law in not giving him proper time off and allowing him to illegally accrue leave.

Never worked anywhere where you could carry over more than a weeks worth; and thats with line manager’s approval. Use it or lose it to us PLEBs
In a commercial environment, the further up you go in an organisation, many companies insist that you take at least a single period of two weeks annual leave.
The reason they do this is because in that time, it is hoped, any criminality/dody dealing you may be up to will become apparent as (say) regular payments you may be making to cover theft or dodgy dealing suddenly go unmade, weekly/monthly accounts suddenly no longer add up and sirens start going off. There is also the possibility that your stand-in might spot something amiss.
I would be very suspicious of anybody in a senior position in an organisation who would rather be at work than spending time with their family.

Being a union boss invites abuse, for the simple reason that it is paid out of dues and looting rather than voluntary payments, and has the presumed aura of being a ‘social good’ which provides convenient cover for all sorts of dodgy dealings. The fact that Union bosses, to a man, seem to physically resemble East End thugs would back this up.
Union membership has plummeted because most members only joined for the insurance cover anyway; they do not want to be de-facto involved with the partisan, ham-fisted political agitation that seems to be the hallmark of modern unions.

I was a member of CWU and it’s predecessors for 26 years. Someone suggested my former union might fund my claim for an asbestos related disease. When I suggested this to my solicitor he replied “Forget it, they won’t”. Now I know why.

A boring example from my past (sorry, but it still rankles decades on). The rules said that when you left the university any accumulated study leave was extinguished. No ifs, no buts. I had a month or two of SL up my sleeve, but when I retired it died. Quite right too.
Shortly afterwards the vice-chancellor moved on. He was able to get paid for his 12+ months of SL, amounting to £100,000+, contrary to the rules. Why?
