New figures show that the number of civil servants earning over £150,000 has fallen dramatically in the last twelve months. The salary bill for senior government officials has been slashed by 18%, saving some £9 million. PMs dont do it for the money – they do it for the ego and in any case if you value their pension & free accommodation the PMs pay isnt too bad. I have no problem with people earning £150K+ if they are worth it – a lot in private sector earn those sort of sums but there should certainly be more benchmarking and competition introduced for top civil service roles

They would be ‘worth it’ for one reason only, that they saved the taxpayer many multiples of what they are paid by increasing efficiency and lowering costs. But they don’t do that, in fact they are hell bent on doing exactly the opposite.
Who cares if people are paid highly paid in the private sector? People on those sums have to compete, and they have to prove they are worth it or they get sacked.
People in public sector sinecures are insulated from the concepts in italic by a steady flow of other people’s money and rhetorical union bullshit.
In the public sector people are paid in accordance to the budget they are in charge of. The bigger their budget, the more pay senior officials get.
There is absolutely no incentive to cut budgets or costs, indeed, various ways of increasing budgets and thus senior management pay, are constantly being dreamed up.
Ever wondered why these people embrace such lunacy as wind power, when far more efficient and inexpensive alternatives abound?
Simple, grossly expensive projects, mean more and more money for senior officials, because of their increased budgetary ‘responsiblity’.

No. In the private sector people who piss away copious sums tend to get found out get the sack, not a promotion. Sure, there is currently a bubble in executive remuneration which is going to be brutally punctured and rightly so.
Quite why the public sector feel they ‘deserve’ equivalent pay and benefits to a notional – spectacularly successful – private sector company escapes me.

Try looking at numbers employed by Arms Length Bodies for starters.

I’m less worried about how much they’re paid than about whether they are any good. The evidence from such capers as the NHS IT system, fire station centralisation and defence procurement suggests otherwise.
Senior civil servants have extremely difficult briefs to carry out – especially those dreamed up by the likes of Balls, Brown, Harman, Blunkett etc etc.

Starting the graph at 200 makes it look like a huge reduction of some 300%, due to the relative sizes of the bars, when in actual fact the reduction is only 40%.
The graph should start at 0 or the bars should be scaled properly.
