Mensch Quits

“Louise Mensch MP will announce this morning that she has tendered her resignation to the Prime Minister, and will stand down as the Member of Parliament for Corby and East Northamptonshire. In her resignation letter, Mrs Mensch thanked the Prime Minister for all his support, but said that she had “been struggling for some time to find the best outcome for my family life, and have decided, in order to keep us together, to move to New York.””

A Tory/Labour marginal by-election? Just what Dave wants right now…

UPDATE: The Labour candidate has hit the ground running:

Another Dave A-list Blairite success story. Looks like it’s ta ta to Corby for the Conservatives – selfish cow, amd quite in character. Still, for the Tory party, as with Chris Patten in 1992, we can all shout “TORY GAIN!” at the back of Ms. Self Publicity Mensch, whatever happens in Corbŷ. Good riddance.

P.S. Expect the writ to be move double-quick for an August 31st by-election (if still possible within time limit) to get this out of the way, without any consultation, or even notification, of the Corby Conservatives by Dave et al! Actually, scrtach that, with Parliament already in recess Dave will have to wait… too bad!

She is a bit of a gadfly, and I expect she just got rather bored with it all. Besides, there are umpteen other opportunities for her to make buckets of money, whether in chick lit or rock music or “the medjia” in NY.

I didn’t much like her apparent lack of independent thought, and her brown-nosing was something awful to see. She’s not a fool, but she allowed Hislop to make her look one, when she was reduced to spouting the Party Line like a gramophone record. She didn’t even seem very convinced herself. Party politics of today’s low standard is probably not really her thing.

Still, it’s a pity to see someone with a spark of character leave the House.

          • Aunt Mat says:

I wonder what she has cost the taxpayer.

The selection committee should have spotted a gadfly.

            Boris won’t stay long either.

She may have been a “conservative” MP, but she was “Blair’s babe” through and through. Good riddance to the lefty!

Labour will win the seat hands down, UKIP will split the tory vote and show Cameron what his loony left brand of conservatism will do to his party in the general election in 2015.

errr….Maybe the inglish constituents should stop voting for them then, just a thought.

          • Truth merchant says:

Errr maybe England like the rest of the uk should have it’s own parliament? But we cannot have that can we as the labour are well and truly finished. Hence devolution for all apart from the English.

          • An idiotic line of reasoning watch says:

eh ? Oh I see , so what you are saying is that its because the inglish constituents only get to vote in a Westminster election that they are compelled to vote for a Scottish candidate whereas if it was for the inglish parliament at errr Westminster then they would be free to vote for an inglish candidate….thats what your saying, right ?

          • Truth merchant says:

No what I’m saying is that England like the rest of the uk should have it’s own parliament then we do not have to be ruled by one eyed jocks!

          • Do you actually engage your brain before posting says:

But thats another argument altogether and fuck all to do with inglish constituents voting for Scottish candidates in general elections.

Enter Farage on a white charger says:

It all depends on how well the Labour electoral machine is going to cope with this sudden windfall. If you look at the 2010 election result below:

      Conservative Louise Mensch 22,886 42.2 +2.3
      Labour Phil Hope 20,935 38.6 -4.5
      Liberal Democrat Portia Wilson 7,834 14.5 +1.7
      BNP Roy Davies 2,525 4.7 N/A
      Majority 1,951 3.6
      Turnout 54,180 69.2 +3.6
Conservative gain from Labour Swing 3.4

Then you’ll see that Labour should in theory be a shoe-in given the lib dem vote is going collapse. The problem is Labour is really short of cash, and given that the electorate are nearly as indifferent to them as they are of the coalition there is a chance for UKIP to make a serious attempt at this seat. According to the Corby council website, the last council election for Corby in 2011 only had 1 ukip candidate who came last, so one would imagine the local party isn’t the strongest ukip has in the east midlands. The question is: Does Farage want to shift resources from his long anticipated battle in Eastleigh if/when Huhne goes down?

If I had been at her selection metting a few years ago and suggested that she shouldn’t be put on the shortlist because she was female, and I didn’t believe she could hold down the job because she was a mother and had a family, then I would probably be in prison by now.

Seriously though, this is just about her seeing the electoral numbers for Corby and deciding she can’t win it at the next General, so getting out whilst less humiliating; also she probably thought it would open up a door for her pal Boris.

She will be getting a “job” (she doesn’t need money after all) somewhere in Murdoch’s empire. A commentator on Fox? Telling all the folks how awful Britain is? They like that kind of thing on Fox.
