Polly Shredded in the Guardian

Last week Guido proved that Labour’s Polly Toynbee was 5100% wrong in her Guardian column, and it seems he was not the only to notice. Taking to the Guardian’s own website DCLG Minister Bob Neil has accused Toynbee of “living on cloud cuckoo land”. The exact location of which is believed to be the Tuscan/Umbrian border.

It is not a humiliation for the public, but it ‘is’ for Tony Blair and Margaret Beckett in their conduct throughout this debacle – trying to rally support for themselves.

The humiliation lies fairly and squarely upon the shoulders of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.”

Polly’s latest article was funny – she described the England we used to have as being “hideously monocultural” – and she was duly destroyed below the line. Normally a good 80-90% of people who read her article do so just to have the enjoyment of tearing it apart below the line but this time it was more like 95%.

That’s PART of the quote from CP Scott attributed to him May 5th 1921 – before the Guardian was taken over by Zioloons. It was the Manchester Evening Guardian and the full quote was

“Comment is free, but facts are sacred”.

    DZ says:

Toynbee needs to remember that council tax is a double tax ie. tax paid by taxed income

A £1000 council tax bill will take approximately one months wages from someone on £15000 a year

Factor in VAT, fuel tax, insurance tax blah blah and I guess most people are on a real tax rate of more than 50%

Also I would imagine council tax is Tuscany is a pittance. I own a place in Spain and the council tax is under ¢100 a year (and this includes bins emptied every day not every 2 weeks like in UK), whereas a band A in the are where I live is £1000 per annum.

Home Secretary, Cloud Cuckoo Land says:

We’ve had a lot of protests about this Polli woman, quite frankly, with local residents saying that she is rude and is reluctant to pay her bills. Oddly, she writes Cuckooese fluently but, when dealing with our people she prefers to shout in peculiar, accented English. We are proud of our tradition of hospitality and many people dream of living here in Cloud Cuckoo Land, but some of the riff-raff whom she invites to stay are not quite the full nine yards, if you know what I mean, and our public cleansing service is running out of recycling capacity for champagne bottles. They’re going to need a bigger tip – as, by the way, our local waiters do, where Polli dines.

    Frederick Bloggs says:

Guido – Polly quoted this report yesterday from the High Pay Commission. It states that

“However, as we show in this latest report prepared for the High Pay Commission by Incomes Data Services, there is rarely a link between directors’ incentives and the way a company performs. In the past 10 years, the average annual bonus for FTSE 350 directors went up by 187 per cent and the average year-end share price declined by 71 per cent.”

There is no way that the FTSE fell by 71% over the last 10 years. It would now be only about a third of where it was in 2001 if this was true.

I have looked at the report and it seems as though one of the authors of the report calculated that the FTSE 350 dropped by over 80% from end of 2000 to end of 2001.

    See table 4.1 here.

    http://highpaycommission.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/HPC-DPperformance.pdf

THIS IS A MASSIVE ERROR as the FTSE 350 actually rose by over 5% in that period.

THIS MEANS THAT THE ENTIRE REPORT BY THE HPC IS BOLLOCKS AS ITS MAIN CONCLUSION IS THAT PAY WENT UP WHILE PERFORMANCE WENT DOWN. BUT THIS IS ONLY TRUE BECAUSE THEY HAVE A MAJOR NUMERICAL ERROR!!

AND THIS IS WHAT POLLY BASES HER RANTINGS ON.

Tim Worstall was the first to pick up on this yesterday.

    • 78
      Ivor Tapeworm says:

The problem with all FTSE indices is that businesses enter and leave it depending on their performance. Thus poorly performing ones are always replaced. Hence, FTSE indices overstate the performance of the Stock Exchange in general.

Tom Harris bemoans the public’s attitude to politicians…

“Mr Oborne echoes the lazy, anti-politics whine we hear so often these days, all based on the absurd notion that politicians were once loved and only fell out of public favour during the expenses scandal. He should take a walk to the Strangers’ Bar. But not to sup with the patrons he seems to despise so much, dearie me, no; he should instead look at the paintings on the corridor outside the bar, which depict the devastating fire which consumed most of the Palace in 1834. And he should reflect on the fact that on that dramatic night, as the Commons went up in flames, a crowd gathered on the South Bank to clap and cheer.”
