TUC in a Spin Over Threatened Pilgrims

Carl Roper is sanctioned by the TUC to spin for Pilgrims – taxpayer-funded trade union officials. The unions are fully aware of the damage that losing this state subsidy would do to their coffers and their ability to buy influence, so are fighting the Cabinet Office consultation launched last week very hard. So hard that they are just making things up:

Either Carl is an idiot, or he is being deliberately misleading. The Cabinet Office £36m figure is only for taxpayer funded union activity in Whitehall, whereas the TPA figure he mentions is in regard to union activity funded by the state right across the country. Channel Four’s FactCheck – so quickly turned to by the TUC when it agrees with them – believe the TPA figure to be an underestimate. It’s based on FOI data released by councils. Many refused. Carl ran away when Guido picked him up on his dodgy spinning.

No doubt he will happily set the record straight when he sees the error of his ways…

Most people simply don’t believe “official figures” for anything anyway, by default.

For example the risks from smoking are way smaller than hyped, climate change can be anything, immigration numbers fail to mention emigration and brits living abroad (10% of brits don’t live here!)

It’s a bit rich that the City and Bankers can spend some £90 million to Tory coffers on lobbying to their advantage but Unions, in the main working for good industrial relations, are considered the ‘bad guys’.
We also see lobbyists of all kinds working on the Government to get what they want, eg food manufacturers against proper labelling, and these are not above board and as transparent as ‘paid time’ for union matters.

John Reid, or Lord Reid of Cardowan, as he prefers to be known, joined G4S in 2009, having previously been Tony Blair’s Home Secretary and Secretaries of State for Health and Defence. The £50,000 a year it is giving the New Labour hard man quickly paid off for G4S as it landed a multi-million pound, four-year contract to supply private security guards for around 200 Ministry of Defence and military sites across the UK just three months after it took him on. Since then he has been diligent in ensuring the hi-tech security used by his employers is a feature of parliamentary debates whenever possible.”
