Brussels Tells Mandy: EU Can Avoid Tax

The European Court of Justice has ruled that retired Eurocrats including the yacht-loving Lord Mandelson will be allowed to dodge tax on a huge scale. Brussels pensions are exempt from national taxes, meaning that the likes of Mandelson and Neil Kinnock only have to cough up 8% on their five-figure taxpayer-funded EU income. Am guessing the Euro-Judges will benefit from their ruling too. The decision to permit an official tax avoidance scheme for former EU officials comes as Brussels cracks down on tax dodging across the continent.  Guido wonders whether George Osborne thinks his old friend Mandy is morally repugnant…

And I wonder if anyone saw Kinnock’s hypocritical little letter in yesterday’s Guardian?

‘Lies, misrepresentations and conspiracy are at the core of the grave concern about the delinquent fixing of the Libor rate and associated misconduct by Barclays and others (Osborne’s dirt-digging raises questions for Tories, 7 July).

‘Has there ever been a better reason for commissioning judicial reviews, with witnesses required, crucially, to give evidence on oath? One review should quickly and specifically pursue the Libor-fixing issues; another, with great deliberation and breadth, should investigate, expose, report on and recommend on the conduct of financial services.

‘When truth is so manifestly at stake, it is vital that the government follows the one course that would maximise the possibility of finding it by making lies a crime of contempt instead of a regrettable convention of business. Cameron’s excuse that he wants a “speedy” inquiry in parliament is a fig leaf – and we all know what fig leaves cover. Even the most brilliant select committee doesn’t take evidence on oath. It can embarrass but not prosecute. It’s time to go beyond that.

Here we have the EU treating itself as some precious being, giving it’s membership special deals and exemptions, whilst spending the tax payers monies ever more recklessly.

This decision is obscene, a slap in the face to hard working Europeans, an example, if ever one was needed, of the disconnect between the Euro-Apparatchik and their self-interest, and the ordinary man in the street.
