If I may, I refer to your excellent referenced article by Delingpole on defending capitalism. I think he his quite right as far as he goes.
As a convinced Adam Smith supoorter personally (from before you were born, when Adam Smith was scorned by all intellectuals and universities, with a very few notable exceptions), I can oinly say that the whole argument is polluted by the banks.
I have already cited the articles here stating what Adam Smith (and many others since) said about the banks. I would add:
1) The “float” (i.e. deposits of citizens) are a “free lunch” for bankers.
2) The implied guiarantee of the state, used to a huge extent by ALL the London banks during the crisis, omposes on any governmetn strict regulation of the deposit taking banks.
We saw what “light touch” regulation did.
If the a
argument is to advance at all between “capitalism” and any other system (God knows it is the least bad of all systems), we simply have to recognise that banking is not like any other industry.
Added to which, bankers must be held accountable for fraud whenever it is committed, as in recent years, when it has been on a massive scale.
Then we can clear the decks and get on with responsible “Adam Smith”, free market capitalism and deal with the other discredited systems/models

About fucking time. This was one of my (many) beefs about Fucking Scotland when I lived there. Bedwetters paid the same in post-apocalyptic Dunfermline as in leafy Surrey.
