Cat Got Your Tonge Nick?
Tory MP Writes to LibDem Leader

Tory MP Robert Halfon is on the attack. This open letter has just been sent to Nick Clegg:

Dear Deputy Prime Minister,

As you may be aware, several media outlets are displaying videos of Baroness Tonge, the Liberal Democrat peer. The video shows her making the following comments:

“Beware Israel,” she says. “Israel is not going to be there forever on its present performance. One day the United States of America will get sick of giving £70 billion a year to Israel.” The Lib Dem peer goes on to say that she thought of Israel as “America’s aircraft carrier in the Middle East” but that one day people in the United States would say “enough is enough”.

She added: “It will not go on forever, it will not go on forever and Israel will lose its support, then they will reap what they have sown.”

Baroness Tonge has an appalling record of strong anti-Israel rhetoric. Too often, her remarks carry an offensive anti-Semitic tone. You will know this from personal experience, as you were forced to ask her to resign from the Liberal Democrat frontbench in 2010 following similar comments. As the time, you said that her comments were “wrong, distasteful and provocative”.

I know that, like me, the Liberal Democrats are supportive of a peaceful two-state solution in Israel and Palestine. Baroness Tonge’s remarks are hugely damaging and disruptive to those efforts. On this basis, I would ask that you consider withdrawing the whip from her with immediate effect.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Halfon MP

The LibDems are yet to ask Baroness Tonge to retract her comments, and it beggars belief that they are deemed acceptable in a mainstream political party, let alone one of government.

Only two countries have ever been founded on religion. Both are now packed to the rafters with religious extremists and nuclear armed. Best of luck with that

Except that Israel was not based on religion. It was founded as a, and remains, a secular State.

        Margaret Thatcher says:

So now we know how it was done. Labour Government deliberately encouraged immigration by asylum seekers. Unscrupulous councils took in huge amounts of money from the Home Office to take in these asylum seekers. A whole army of public sector workers and charity workers were recruited to look after them, creating a massive vested interest. The more unscrupulous and corrupt councils like Portsmouth, made huge amounts of money for a few Developers, Politicians and corrupt council officers and received huge illegal political donations for their troubles, housing them. Not one single voter was told what was really going on either by the government or the corrupt councils. This is how politics now works in the UK. Shame on you all, especially Brown, Blair, Glasgow, Portsmouth and the other Unitary Authorities that took the Home Office shilling, and kept it all secret from the electorate.

Nothing (you’ve quoted) is wrong or bad in any meaningful way. She probably is an anti-semite, but Israel will not be around forever, neither will GB or the US, most countries reap what they sow in some form (massive immigration in the UK, 9/11 in the US) so what’s the problem?

          Rational Gaze says:

Jenny Tonge is just a Jew-hating fanatic masquerading as someone with legitimate criticisms of Israel. Whilst I disagree with the police investigation, since “hate crime laws” are inherently anti-free speech, the Lib-Dems are perfectly free to sack her for being the vapid, preening, supercilious, twit she really is. She is, on the other hand, more than welcome to the join the BNP, whose views I’m sure are far more compatible with Tonge’s than the Lib-Dems’. Tonge’s statements were clear and unambiguous in the specific context in which she uttered her poorly-researched, factually disadvantaged opinions. She thinks that the state of Israel should be dissolved… and systematically annihilated by its enemies. Sure, Israel isn’t perfect. It’s over-top responses and ham-handed policies have certainly cost quite a lot of lives, and its immigration policy is equally bizarre. However, in Muslim states, other religions are either banned completely, or their practitioners are persecuted and tormented incessantly. Whereas in Israel, Muslims, Christians, and other groups have full freedom of religion. They can, and do, vote, serve, and participate in every aspect of Israeli life, and the religious sites of Israel are open to all. Israel is more democratic, and has the highest human development rating, best standard of living and best economy of the middle east, and women are granted full human rights. Israel has also repeatedly tried to make peace with those who have sworn repeatedly to exterminate them if it is the last thing they will ever do, despite the continuous barrage of rockets, and other attacks from terrorist organisations such as Hamas, who are bent on Jewish genocide.

It’s easy to criticise a nation when you are safe in your cream-puff western country, where the most taxing decision you have to make is how best to be a dour-faced, miserable, bastard, who thinks bitching all day about the government will actually solve anything. Yet Israel are under constant threat of annihilation, surrounded on all sides by those who, given half the chance, would willingly and gladly murder each and every Israeli citizen. All the while pompous, self-absorbed blow-hards who take themselves too seriously whine that Israel “isn’t doing enough” to curb the violence that is, more often than not, started entirely by the Arabs. If you are going to criticise someone, criticise the Islamic states who deny their citizens freedom of religion, deny women human rights, base their laws on the Sharia, and have declared in no uncertain terms that Israel should be wiped off of the face of the planet. Unless, of course, you are of the opinion that all Muslims are simply mindless beasts incapable of restraining their animalistic instinct to murder everybody who doesn’t agree with their views and are thus not responsible for their actions, and so it is the fault of Israel for enticing the wrath of their savage and often inexcusable enemies simply by existing?

Sure, criticise Israel, but if you are going to do so, make sure they are valid criticisms, not seething with bigotry, caricatures, straw-men, and vitriol. Instead of taking examples of Israel’s errors and palpable failures to justify your blatant mischaracterisations that, logically, don’t follow at all from the evidence you appeal to, stick to critiquing the faults Israel actually does have, like deporting the children of immigrant workers for not being ethnically Jewish, based on what can only be described as a bizarre immigration policy. Instead of slagging Israel off for things it hasn’t done or for being something it isn’t, focus on what it has done wrong, and suggest ways to correct it, whilst contrasting it with what it has done right (which is a lot more than you presumably assume, but then your anti-Israeli comments don’t exactly strike me as coming from someone familiar with Israeli history and politics.)

Sure, defend freedom of speech, but don’t complain when some vitriolic, psychopath is given the sack because their extremist ideologies that are alarmingly out of touch with their own party. She shouldn’t be investigated by the police, but she certainly deserved to get the sack, and deserves no sympathy whatsoever considering that she has been flirting with Hamas and holocaust deniers for quite some time now. There is a difference between being genuinely critical of Israel, and just slagging it off because that is how you like to spend your afternoon. Just like how there is a difference between being critical of Israel and wishing its total annihilation. Tonge getting sacked is not a mark against free speech. Hatred of the Jews just isn’t in the Lib-Dem manifesto. Being investigated by the police, however, simply for voicing your extremist, anti-Semitic ideology (no matter how divorced from logic, reason, evidence, and moral values) IS a mark against free speech, however. Hate speech laws are absurd authoritarian thought-control mechanisms that deprive us of right to be express ourselves, no matter how offensive, obnoxious and blatantly false our statements might be.

I agree that Israel needs to change, but at the same time I recognise that Israel cannot be entirely blamed for everything. Your unfair and blatantly false mischaracterisation of Israel as a religious supremacist state that denies the freedom of religion is so demonstrably false and laughably false that I question how you are able to simultaneously express such views alongside your regular brilliant libertarian commentary. Don’t bother replying. I have refrained from clicking on ‘Notify me of new posts via email’, and will not be coming back here to check. Until your flippant, derisive views on what is a complex and nuanced topic rise above the level of petty polemical propaganda of the sort one might find in The Sun, and until your knowledge of Israel rises above the kind of bullshit one might find in the writings of the leftist intelligentsia, then I don’t give a fuck about anything that you could possibly have to say on the subject.

I also don’t give a fuck whether or not you laugh at the systematic rubbishing of your quaint, though ludicrous notions about the state of Israel, or whether these comments, combined with the effrontery of your fellow Libertarians supporting the sacking of anti-Jewish bigot for their extremist views, and the severed penis wedged firmly up your anal passage is causing you more than a little discomfort. It might also interest you to know that an increasing number of Palestinians and Israelis are in a favour of a single secular state over the whole region and both groups. And just in case you might have missed it in the cascade of riposte, I actually agree with you on the whole freedom of speech. Right, I’m off to the kitchen to go eat some glass. Pedal to the metal. До свидания.

First, seven billion a year is probably an overestimate, but Israel does get more than half of the US total for foreign aid.

Secondly – and on the basis of the letter above: I have not seen a full report of the meeting – everything said is a statement of the bleeding obvious. Sooner or later (more likely later) the US aid will stop, and Israel is in deep trouble: they will simply be unable to afford their military without totally militarising the economy, with a consequent dramatic fall in standard of living, and if they do not maintain the spending, they are militarily vulnerable. Remember stopping aid to Israel is part of Ron Paul’s platform, so, although by no means mainstream yet, it is being said. Google it, but , as always, be careful of biased sources.

Anti semitic? Bollocks. Anyone who ever criticises israel is always called anti semitic. They just revel in their persecution.

But the most interesting thing I have learnedd from this is that there is a liberal democrat freinds of israel group of mps, and the same for laour and probably the tories. No other country has these ‘friends of …’ groups. to me this is just lobbying by the back door and all such organisations should be banned.

And btw, I am not racist or anti-semitic, and I believe that the 2state solution is the correct one now. But I also believe that israel will drag its heels for decades to come in a gentle war of attrition and more settlements until there wont be any room for the palestinians in a 2 state solution.

On the other hand – would you want a two state ‘solution’ with the Palestinians? No c*unt wants ‘em. Not the Jordanians, not the Syrians. Just keep them all fenced up in compounds and throw them just enough food and weapons to cause maximum irritation to the Israelis.

Compare and contrast with how the Greeks dealt with Cyprus. Did they keep those displaced from the north in compounds on the border and give them just enough weapons to keep the war ongoing for generations? No.

Rod Liddle on the loony UN sexism special rapporteur:

“There is more sexism in Britain than in any other country in the world, according to a mad woman who has been sent here by the United Nations.

Rashida Manjoo is a part-time professor of law at Cape Town University in the totally non-sexist country of South Africa (otherwise known as Rape Capital Of The World).

Mrs Magoo has been wandering around with her notebook and is appalled by the sexist “boys’ club” culture here, apparently.

I don’t doubt we still have sexism in the UK. But is it worse than in, say, Saudi Arabia, d’you think, honey-lamb? Or about 175 other countries? Get a grip, you doolally old bat.”
