Not only do we subsidise their gin, but we also pick up the Lords’ tech tab:

10 Jan 2012 : Column WA46
House of Lords: IT

Lord Kennedy of Southwark:
To ask the Chairman of Committees how many iPads have been purchased to date for use by Members or staff of the House of Lords.[HL14465]

The Chairman of Committees (Lord Brabazon of Tara):
Twenty iPads have been purchased for use by Members and staff of the House of Lords to evaluate how handheld devices can facilitate core parliamentary work.

I bought an iPad on expenses about three months ago. I started commenting on articles on my local paper’s website under a pseudonym of ‘MileEnder’ but was spotted and exposed almost immediately, because I can’t spell, so I have had to stop. Oh woe is me. Boaz.

That commenting on articles – It’s not me it’s my cousin Gary.

Yes I am afraid I gave myself away. When I was accused of being behind the pseudonym on the NEWs website, I posted ‘It’s not me it’s my cousin Gary.’ So my Constituents now know that as well as being uneducated and unable to spell, I am also incredibly thick. Must go for a spin in my new Range Rover Evoque to cheer myself up. Jahbulon.

feels like you’re getting a little desperate for moral outrage now guido, you definitely have a point wrt to subsidised fine dining but paying for communications devices seems a little less shocking

I disagree. Not with the idea of using iPads if they can be proved to be useful but twenty is far too many for evaluation and I would guess five are being used to evaluate and fifteen to lucky peers who happened to be int he right place at the right time.

      It is troughing.

I bet they’re easier to get up and down the HoL office stairs than the bloody server I lugged down there for them in 1998 ;-)

Why anyone would need an unsecurable iPad rather than a laptop for parliamentary business is anyone’s guess though. Perhaps they think that putting shiny things in the hands of dull people will compensate?

Look, they’re cool, you can turn them round and the screen turns round too.

I think I’ve just figured out what Ed Balls is doing with his hand signals at PMQs – he’s using Tic-Tack to communicate with his iPad and run his own bookies firm. Shame on Rusty for assuming it was Tourettes.

Have a similar number of Android and Linux based tablets been purchaced for a similar evaluation
Or are the Lords also falling for the con of going for Apples more expensive, less capable branded shiney thing

    • 25
      The Paragnostic says:

Much as I detest Apple, the iPad is more capable than any of the Android tablets out there, and as far as I know there isn’t yet a good Linux tablet, though that may change.

Since most of the buggers will just use them for playing Angry Birds, it doesn’t really matter.

What does matter is that the new ICT curriculum has input from more than just Microsoft, and that we teach kids how to code rather than how to put together a load of bollocks Powerpoint presentation. We’re not aiming to produce a generation of politicians, after all.

IPad for evaluation of core parliamentary work…

    In other words..

    Twitter
    Facebook

As anyone would know to get windows office on the IPad to facilitate documents costs anything between 40 – 60 pounds
    Who is paying for that?

    • 27
      The Paragnostic says:

Being able to browse Hansard, or to pull up PDFs of white / green papers, shouldn’t cost anything, and I think an email client comes with the kit, so they’re unlikely to need Orifice for anything.

That’s not to say some grubby Microsoft sales person won’t convince them they need it, though.
