Diane Abbott is never far from controversy, especially online. Remember the time she tweeted Labour’s latest poll results during the two-minute Remembrance Day silence? Well there can no blaming a staffer for yesterday’s tweet, that has caused uproar across all parties. At a time when the media is having a long overdue conversation about racism, Abbott is refusing to see that there is anything wrong with slamming an entire group of people based on the colour of their skin. She is a Shadow Minister and represents a constituency that is 61% white…
Sections 17 to 29 of the Public Order Act 1986 are pretty clear on statements like this. They cover deliberately provoking hatred of a racial group, distributing racist material to the public, and perhaps most notably in this case, inciting inflammatory rumours about an ethnic group, for the purpose of spreading racial discontent. Or perhaps a “sorry” would be more appropriate…

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that Abbott will be voted out in Hackney. Here is a little thought for Guido’s readers: I work in a small country in west Africa and there is no racism. There is massive tribalism though. Belonging to a tribe is very important – it says who you are and is a source of valuable support. What happens when tribal people are removed from their tribe by (for example) slavery? Loss of support and identity. They can’t say proudly, “I am Peul” they just become “African” and lost. But after numerous generations of being lost, a new identity should have been forged and skin colour ignored. It is very sad that, in some cases, this hasn’t happened.

A few years back at a Xmas works ‘do’ I was speaking with my opposite number from Glasgow, who I had known for quite a few years.

In matters like this, I think the fair thing to do is replace white with black (or vice versa depending on what case you’re talking about), and then see if the statement sounds racist or not. If one were to talk carte blanche about “black people” in a manner like Abbot has done, then one would be vilified as racist.

Isn’t that what Alan Handen was vilified for saying on Match of the Day – ” coloured people”. Only white people are racist.

Some ten years ago, a West Indian friend of mine asked me to visit his Estate Agent’s office in S London where Ms Abbott was to address members of the local business community. One of the issues bought up was the establishment of a ‘Black Bank’. I understood this referred to a Caribbean Bank more sympathetic to their needs than established High St Banks.

Contrast the “divide and rule” practised by “white people” with the building of solidarity amongst “white people” by black people who post tweets such as the one under discussion.
In reality, I believe that the majority of UK residents have moved beyond using skin colour as a categorisation if for no other reason that it has become meaningless with immigration from every corner of the globe and a great deal of intermarriage and consequent offspring. Only a politician looking for a following would consider distinguishing between skin colours.

I do not know if it is still the case as I now live in Bristol but some 20 odd years ago, I was active in the Tenant Participation movement in the London Borough of Southwark.
All of the local Tenants Associations were presented with a draft ‘Constitution’ which included the mandatory clause that “Racism is defined as violence or intimidation of black/ethnic minorities persons by some white people”. Several Associations including my own objected to this and were treated to several diatribes on ‘Home Office statistics’ on how likely black/ethnic minority people were more likely to be assaulted but strangely, according to the Council, no such statistics were collected to show how likely ‘whites’ were likely to be attacked by ethnic minorities or Black on Black violence.
Failure to include the above clause verbatim in an Associations Constitution resulted in the threat that particular Association would be denied funding.
Until politicians become honest in their response to racism OF ANY KIND, there will always be the bleating of the kind portrayed by Sasha Baron Cohen, “Is it cos I is Black?”
