Soon Huhne

Keir Stammer the Director of Public Prosecutions told Radio Five this morning:

“We are very close to a decision. There is one remaining issue which is that we are seeking some material which is held by a national newspaper. That is the only thing we are waiting for now … I understand why people think it is taking a lot of time but the way in which we get material from journalists is an important principle, quite separate from the Chris Huhne case.”

Soon Huhnie my boy. Soon.

          Ding dong merrily on high,
In heav’n the bells are ringing:
          Ding dong! verily the sky
          Is riv’n with angel singing.
Gloria, Huhne’s bum is in extremis!

          E’en so here below, below,
          Let steeple bells be swungen,

Nothing will come of it. If they can’t take Huhne to a trial without what Vicky told a paper then they have no evidence that the Huhne was dr1ving. It is all down to he said, she said.

The only way to prove that the Huhne was behind the wheel is to prove that the car was parked in stanstead while he was in Brussels.

Keir Stammer is the most left wing UK Director of Public Prosecutions in living memory.
Which is why what he said on radio 5 is simply flying a kite on public opinion, and with Huhne’s ex wife stating she has political ambitions she will withdraw giving testimony for a fast lane to political office.

don’t hold your breathe, kier is a die hard lefty, huhne is a lefty and we all know it isnt wrong if a lefty does it. The phrase “we are close to a decision” can all too easily mean that we will soon hear “prosecution not in the public interest”

Good point, Mr Tony. The issue here, as I see it, is do we:

a.) simply be thankful that it removes the huhne (in a manner of speaking) from office, or

b.) decide that it simply increases the need to pursue the point pour decourager les autres?

      My preference is b.

        Airey Belvoir says:

Surely the most obvious indicator of his guilt is the fact that, when asked if it was him driving that night, he never simply says ‘no, I was not.’ He cannot, because he is guilty. Instead he always recites a lawyer-agreed mantra ” these allegations are untrue’ (without saying which allegations he is talking about) – so if the ordure hits the fan, he can claim that he did not, technically, lie. Nobody is fooled, except possibly the CPS, who choose to be.

          Observer says:

Preferred outcome is for Huhne to go down for defeating the ends of justice and for speeding and for the appalling Vicki Pryce to be si,ilary convicted for fraud and then be deported to Greece. I sypathise with Huhne and can see why in relative terms Miss trumpington is an improvement on Ms Pryce.

I have just seen Mr. Chicken’s defence: it is awesome. Apparently he was distracted by the fantastic sight of an illuminated windmill thundering around in still air, and it brought tears to his eye thinking about all that free electricity greasing the palms of all his pals. Whilst struggling with his hankie, his foot tapped out an AC rhythm for a nanosecond, just as he passed a camera. As the camera was defective it is all bollocks anyway, and he can prove it.

Let’s see – ordinary person who commits perjury: 4 years?

Chris Huhne will get, at a guess, 12 months of which he’ll serve 8 weeks in a holiday camp open prison on the coast, where he’ll spend his time getting p!ssed and fulminating about how hard done-by he’s been.

And then he’ll go back to being an MP.

    • 56
      Albert M. Bankment says:

If he’s charged, he will probably (be forced to) resign as a minister, but will undoubtedly cling on as an MP as he will continue to maintain his innocence for as long as it takes to get to trial. If the gods are smiling and he’s eventually convicted of perjury, however, there is no question that he will “go back to being an MP”.

Perjury only applies to evidence given under oath. The correct charge here is perverting the course of justice. Allegedly of course.

          confused says:

If you sign a Statement of Truth which is what the form is & your statement is false then its perjury in order to pervert justice

          • Andrew says:

Statement of Truth is in civil proceedings.

The problem for the CPS – a genuine problem – is that as a matter of law you cannot have a conspiracy between two people only if at the time they were married to each other.

And with certain irrelevant exceptions you cannot be forced to give evidence against a person who at the time was your spouse.

So if Vicky clams up – sayonara to any prosecution.

        • 74
          Albert M. Bankment says:

But of course. Still, a conviction for ‘perverting the course’ would still ensure that the ghastly man would have no choice but to resign. Well, if he were not a Liberal Democrat it would be a certainty, so I suppose I shouldn’t be quite so adamant about it.

Tom Harris bemoans the public’s attitude to politicians…

“Mr Oborne echoes the lazy, anti-politics whine we hear so often these days, all based on the absurd notion that politicians were once loved and only fell out of public favour during the expenses scandal. He should take a walk to the Strangers’ Bar. But not to sup with the patrons he seems to despise so much, dearie me, no; he should instead look at the paintings on the corridor outside the bar, which depict the devastating fire which consumed most of the Palace in 1834. And he should reflect on the fact that on that dramatic night, as the Commons went up in flames, a crowd gathered on the South Bank to clap and cheer.”

Focus group time. says:

The thing that Dave needs to work out is which group is more likely to vote Conservative. Mad swivel-eyed loons or mad homosexuals wishing to get married.
