Abbott’s Poll Priorities

This year’s rigid poppy enforcement is pretty unedifying, but:

What better time to retweet Labour’s latest poll results than in the middle of the two minute silence…

The further Right you go, the less government you will encounter. Ultimately, it’s anarchy. The left wing, in contrast, is defined by its desire to control every aspect of society. The Nazis decreed not only where you worked, where you lived, whether you lived in a house, in the city, in the countryside, where and when you went on holiday and so on, they even decided whether you lived or died. Absolute control of every aspect of your life.

That makes them most definitely left wing.

          @33, 11:39am

Only a fucking moron would think that a bloke that advocated big government and the state taking priority over the individual was a right winger.

He also hated the German wealthy classes and aristocracy, and was a huge admirer of Lenin. The main evidence that the usual suspects offer to support the claim that Hitler was right wing was his use of the communists in his country as whipping boys – he wasn’t doing that because they were opposed to him ideologically, he was getting rid of the competition.

If you can’t grasp that, I suggest you do some proper research, but I suspect you don’t have the necessary critical thinking skills to do so.

the instruction proved wrong but was logical and given in good faith.

Haig was replicating the German Verdun tactics of massive artillery bombardment, not appreciating the defenders of the Somme had deeper shelters dug into the chalk which was not possible for the French at Verdun.

Haig was deploying a volunteer amateur Army for the first time. He did not think they had the discipline to follow a creeping barrage, and did not want them enthusiastically running into their own barrage, hence the instruction.

After the first day losses, Haig modified the tactic, sent his men forward at night into No Mans Land 9 days later and they advanced quickly when the barrage lifted: his flexibilty won significant advances with few losses.

Hindsight is easy and not a good basis for class war politics. Haig’s Army was the only one of the war that never broke, Luddendorf described him as ” Master of the Field” and after the war he created the British Legion as a non political ex serviceman’s organisation . ( gf France Italy Germany) when he died more people paid respects than to Lady Diana – with half the UK population

For the record, it was an over-enthusiastic staffer back in the office who tweeted during the two minute silence. I was actually in Hackney observing it. As for those above who seem to imply that I would not care about Armistice day because I am of immigrant origin. Tens of thousands of Commonwealth nationals fought and died for Britain during the first and second World War. And this includes thousands of West Indians.

Nothing racist or bigotted about that – afterall, I could not & would not ever state that I understand your values, culture, heritage & history.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_Beharry needs no introduction

http://www.100greatblackbritons.com/bios/walter_tull.html Lieutenant Tull’s heroic example is one of so many from the First World War, also a time when class social, gender and racial barriers were brought down in a time of national sacrifice. This was half a century ahead of changes to attitudes in British society, when London Underground maintained a “colour bar” in employment until the1960s. Moreover, the first Indian officers went through Sandhurst nearly a century ago and held authority over “white” NCOs and soldiers.

In WW2, some 300 or so West Indians served as aircrew, and some 90 men received decorations. This included seven Distinguished Service Orders, and 64 DFC’s. Probably the most decorated was Squadron Leader Ulric Cross, who was awarded both the DSO and the DFC. The citation for the latter notes his ‘exceptional navigational ability’ and the ‘very large number of sorties’ he had flown ‘against heavily defended targets’ in Germany.

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/colonies_colonials_01.shtml

Then there’s the long list of Indian troops, including the Gurkhas, who were ferociously brave beyond the comprehension of any of us nowadays. Sikh soldiers (sailors and airmen) preserve elements of their traditional dress in the modern uniform. The British Army has most recently recruited solders from Fiji in particular.
