In the Beginning there was Samizdata…
British Political Blogging Pioneer 10 Years Old Today

Perry de Havilland, the British Blogfather, reminds us that the Samizdata blog today celebrates ten years existence and the creation of 13,315 articles and 226,617 comments. It was a revelation to discover easy to use software that allowed push-button publication of articles without requiring technical knowledge. There were also some good parties…

Before there was ConservativeHome, before there was Recess Monkey (R.I.P.), before even Iain Dale had an online diary, there were Samizdistas. Long before he heard of HTML Guido began taking baby blogging steps at Samizdata. In a sense Samizdata begat Order-Order.com

Jonah Strikes a Chord

This week’s Speccie has a gem of a Jonah tale:

“In his last months as prime minister, Gordon Brown sat down and wrote a fan letter to a young British singer-songwriter. ‘With the troubles that the country’s in financially,’ he told her, ‘you are a light at the end of the tunnel.’ Last weekend that light officially went out: Adele has suffered a career-threatening vocal cord injury and will not sing again this year.”

Another fine mess!

Dave Backs the Mad Marxist Moaner

Cameron told the House that Rowan Williams “speaks for the country”. A highly dubious claim..

The Mad Marxist has called on the UK to “take seriously the moral agenda of the protesters at St Paul’s”. This has been leapt on by the protesters and media, as if his backing is somehow a surprise. His silence of the last two weeks was the real shock: William’s words today fit the history of this turbulent priest.

As the Telegraph exposed not long ago, the intelligence services were so concerned with Williams that they had him on a “problem” list in the Eighties. The Prime Minister was briefed about this “subversive” and his connections to Trotskyites. He was a long standing  member of the controversial Jubilee Group of lefty clerical agitators. Are you sure about this Dave?

Fiona MacTaggart Apologises to Chloe Smith for Bitchiness
Leaves Chris Bryant Looking Silly (Again)

We remarked on the unpleasant exchange in parliament yesterday between Fiona MacTaggart and young Chloe Smith which struck Guido as rougher than naked mud wrestling. Chris Bryant tried to play it down…

Yesterday:

Today:

Apparently, on reflection, Fiona MacTaggart agreed with Guido and Neo-Guido, rather than her full-of-spin colleague Chris Bryant. Fiona has made a rather gracious apology for what she herself admits were mean and patronising remarks about Chloe Smith being fresh out of primary school: “I didn’t think at all about how that must have felt to her at her first outing at the despatch box. That was mean and I am sorry.” We won’t hold our breath for a correction from Chris…

PMQs LIVE: Acropolis Now Edition

Poll: Is Hugh Grant a Bastard?

Guido has come to the conclusion that Hugh Grant, proselytiser for high standards in public life and privacy laws, is a bastard.

Exhibit A: fathers child. Exhibit B: breaks up with mother during pregnancy. Exhibit C: immediately after the birth goes golfing.

What do you think?

Even Labour are beginning to address the problems of absentee fathers… Is this really a good example for this high profile voice of publc morality and virtue to be setting?

It’s Not Beauty!

When the missing cat belonging to John Hemming’s mistress miraculously turned up just hours after his wife was given a suspended sentence for stealing it, many thought it was too good to be true. And they were right. PA has the scoop:

“Vanessa Howie, Cats Protection’s field veterinary officer, said a study of a photograph of Beauty before her disappearance and of the stray cat showed they were not the same animal. Ms Howie noted: “There are many differences between the cats in these two photos. The cat in the second photo has white paws and a white bib, whereas the cat in the first photo clearly does not.”

The mystery continues…

Mark Reckless told UKIP…

“We are more than a star on someone else’s flag.”

cynic says:

Can anyone help me? I went on holiday a week ago and returned to find someone has pulled out the stake and Gordon Brown is back and acting as Prime Minister. What did I miss? Has there been a snap election?
