Polly: “Labour Weren’t Very Good at Blowing Their Own Trumpet”

There’s an hilarious report of Polly Toynbee’s appearance at the Edinburgh Book Show over at Total Politics. Though she pines “nostalgically for the good old days of Blair and Brown”, apparently the last government were only worthy of a six out of ten in her view. She apparently had some hard hitting criticisms of the New Labour machine. Not the debt, deficit, moral bankruptcy or rank corruption that the project racked up, rather their lack of spinning skills:

“Labour weren’t very good at blowing their own trumpet.”

UPDATE: Polly’s declaration that “left-wing people are more intelligent, and just generally better people” has caused some splutters too…

          • statist says:

The right is free-market, Libertarian, i.e precisely what caused the financial crisis through excessive leverage/credit ie predatory lending in the first place. If Europe is moving to the right, that can only be because efforts to regulate financial services are in fact failing, and these efforts to regulate are failing because most people are being misled into falsely believing that regulation is right-wing. The psychology of this is really quite clever. Anarchists (deregulators) will have most people fearing regulation by making them associate it with fascism. But fascism was left-wing not right-wing. What the financial services fear is a return of legislation in the USA and Germany from 1933 onwards which was effectively Keynesian. Economics for much of the last forty years has been non Keynesian. See Friedman, Hayek etc and what they vilified and look into who the most prominent economists have been since the end of WWII. It is statistically unexpected.

          • AC1 says:

Stop talking crap. The level of debt is controlled by the reserve ratio which was deliberately lowered by the state to encourage more debt, and all currencies in the currency cartel called Basel did this. They did this to try and get more tax.

          • Maximus says:

And whose moral compass completely failed in the face of moral hazard?

          • statist says:

“And whose moral compass completely failed in the face of moral hazard?”

            The banks.

“Stop talking crap. The level of debt is controlled by the reserve ratio which was deliberately lowered by the state to encourage more debt, and all currencies in the currency cartel called Basel did this. They did this to try and get more tax.”

It was the banks that controlled their reserve ratios not the state. They found clever (or not so) financially engineered ways to subvert their captial ratio requirements. Banks are private instutuions. They create the money supply. It was their predatory lending behaviour that created the bubble. Blair/Brown simply allowed this to happen by emasculating the BoE’s powers to control the money supply.

Blair and Brown are/were libertarians, just as Cameron and Osborne are. They were/are good for business (especially for banker’s bonuses).

          • Anonymous says:

If you insist on a warped interpretation of libertarian then
you are whistling in the wind. In a libertarian economy each bank
could issue their own currency (backed by for example gold) and set their own interest rates from the ground up. A bank failure would be treated like any other corporate failure. Read Hayek, Rothbard or de Soto.

          Polly doesn’t really understand politics.

The New Labour versus Tory pantomime is just a charade for the masses, perpetuated by the many trolls (aka useful idiots) on here.

What if there were elements (essentially libertarian), within the parties on both sides of the parliamentary house. Libertarians promote freedoms (aka liberal democracy) above responsibilities…as it’s good for business. Libertarians implemented equal rights legislation and race equality legislation. Libertarians promoted human rights and the wider european union integration all because they are good for business.

Blair must have been extremely relaxed about the super rich just as much as Mandelson, judging by their houses.

Libertarians are employed to do what’s best for private profits and big, oligarchic businesses whether it be via free or even rigged markets.

“Labour weren’t very good at blowing their own trumpet.”

The point that is being made is that Labour made a lot of changes (e.g. minimum wage, Sure Start) that potentially benefited those in the middle income groups and below (I say potentially, because some were so cack-handed and bureucratic as to be counter-productive), but because of the fear of upsetting the prevailing neo-classical economic consensus the kept quiet about them.

Doing good by stealth. Unfortunately, it was so stealthy that even the beneficiaries either didn’t notice or didn’t associate it with Labour.

Bill Clinton made exactly the same mistake, with exactly the same result.

Labour racked up of the biggest deficit in the UK’s history: creating a run on the banks – first in 130 years, the record low interest rates stealing from savers to bailout feckless borrowers (including the government), high inflation to inflate away feckless borrowers debts (but cripple savers), selling more than half UK’s gold reserves at massive loss to buy worthless bits of Euro paper, record breaking 30% devaluation of the UK Pound raising costs of fuel food and other commodities the UK economy needs, record immigration into the UK throwing British on jobs crap heap for cheaper foreign labour. Signing the Lisbon CONstitution, meaning the UK is bailing out the failing Mickey Mouse Euro currency despite not being in the Euro project, and even more billions extra given away to the IMF.

      Yes Polly, weren’t Labour great!?!

          • jgm2 says:

Bush, after 9/11, was determined not to let America slide into recession. So he okay-ed the hiring of millions of ‘homeland security’ types and squandered bazillions pump-priming the US economy to make sure there was no recession.

‘Merkins were actually told that it was their patriotic duty to go out there and spend money. Interest rates were cut to the bone to enable them to go and borrow more money to spend at WalMart. To not let OBL change the ‘Merkin way of life.

This provided the perfect cover for the Maximum Imbecile to employ one million bedwetters, box-tickers and bastards. If anybody challenged him as to what, the fuck, he was doing he used to just point to the yanks and say ‘they’re doing it too’. All he had to do was borrow slightly less and he could (and did) use that excuse time after time. Likewise, when Greenspan would cut interest rates, that gave Brown the go-ahead to cut rates here. ‘They’re less than America’ was the only excuse he needed. ‘We’re not alone’.

And when house pr*ces were going stratospheric – same excuse – ‘They’re going up less than America’.

The yanks merely provided cover for the Maximum Imbecile. So, in that sense, it ‘started in America’.

And also, in the sense that the US and UK economies are destroyed then OBL did win. Although at least he’s not about to rub our faces in it.

In future only Guardian subscribers will be trusted with a polling card. As for the rest of us, we’ll have our ballot papers filled in by those better able to understand what is good for us.

I think, actually, what Polly meant to say is that left-wing people THINK that they are more intelligent. Pop over to the CiF site and see what the Guardianistas are saying. See if you can work it out – ’caused I’m fucked if I can. Most seem to speak to each other in a smug, impenetrable language that only the initiated can understand. It as though they are some sort of sect speaking in tongues.

Or, just a thought, is Polly really telling us how intelligent she thinks that she is? – despite, it is said, finding herself at Oxford with 1 ‘A’ Level – and predicatably emerging with nothing.

Now that is a real waste – her scholarship could have gone to a much brighter, less privileged working class kid who would no doubt have made a far better fist of things and would most likely make a better contribution to society than the sour, elitist Toynbee ever will.

I’d say it was these two’s success that persuaded Cameron that he needed the likes of Coulson to do the same job for him. Unfortunately Coulson was shit at the job. Perhaps he didn’t exude the same kind of malevolence as Campbell and so the papers (and BBC) were’nt frightened enough into getting the T*ry message across.

          Ol' Blue Eyes says:

I’m flummoxed rather than offended. Tory and Labour supporters tend to vote on geographical and economic grounds. Tory voters are more likely to be the better off, the self-employed, non-industrial private sector workers, and people from rural, suburban and southern parts of the country. Labour voters are more likely to be the working class, public sector workers, industrial workers, those from the North, Scotland, Wales and urban areas. That’s simplifying it obviously, but you get the point. Policies actually hardly enter into it, beyond the basic economic ones (which I suppose is why we’re all ignored!) Most people don’t choose their politics, they’re drawn to a party and then rationalise it. But I’m confused why you think the people in the Tory groups are stupider than the ones in the Labour groups.

    Domino says:

Speaking of deluded left-wingers, just seen the make-up of the panel to hear from victims of the riots, ehm alas going on the fact that most of them seem to be as lefty as you can get, short of being sat in the BBC canteen, here is a summary of their findings to save money.

    1. We conclude that the riots were a result of perceived TORY cuts.

    2. In no way were those caught rioting and looting guilty of criminality, instead they were a victim of a dietary deficincies in parents, which was caused by lack of milk due to Margaret Thatcher.

    3. Respondents were all racist, even those of ethnic minority backgrounds who raised concerns regarding the activities of their neighbours are in fact “Uncle Tom’s”.

    4. The youths involved should not be sentenced to custody, the panel feel that several weeks in Disneyland as punishment would be appropriate, for particularly violent offenders this should be Disneyland Paris.

    5. The main cause of the disconnect of youth is the gap between rich and poor, increasingly those misguided youths who carried out such acts are increasingly concerned about employment opportunities, particularly where Eastern Europeans who generally have better qualifications, can speak English and who do not believe society owes them a living are replacing them.

    6. There is no correlation between the fact that almost all of those involved (up to the age of approximately 26 – 27), would have been a product of the Blair / Brown education system, any research indicating that society degenerated in the 13 years of Labour and “liberal / PC teaching” is circumstantial and the panel conclude that any entity blaming them is indeed a Nazi / Baby Eater / Pedo**.

The ones I’ve met are bitter, rather twisted people who always moan about how the nasty tories took their meal ticket away. They seem to remember nothing of the past twenty years other than “That Woman” and have a complete blind spot whenever some socialist tinpot dictator massacres their own people.

They understand nothing about economics and imagine that we are always just one new law or regulation away from the perfect society.

On the other hand, La ToyBee has a house in this country and another one abroad and pulls in the sort of wage most would love, and all for writing silly things in a newspaper read by a few people.

“Farage is a snake oil salesman, but a very good one. His supposed anti-immigration stance is all smoke and mirrors, as is his carefully cultivated image as a ‘man of the people’. The truth is that UKIP is a pro-immigration party that exists to lobby for the interests of the City of London.”
