There’s an hilarious report of Polly Toynbee’s appearance at the Edinburgh Book Show over at Total Politics. Though she pines “nostalgically for the good old days of Blair and Brown”, apparently the last government were only worthy of a six out of ten in her view. She apparently had some hard hitting criticisms of the New Labour machine. Not the debt, deficit, moral bankruptcy or rank corruption that the project racked up, rather their lack of spinning skills:

If Europe is moving to the right, that can only be because efforts to regulate financial services are in fact failing, and these efforts to regulate are failing because most people are being misled into falsely believing that regulation is right-wing. The psychology of this is really quite clever. Anarchists (deregulators) will have most people fearing regulation by making them associate it with fascism. But fascism was left-wing not right-wing. What the financial services fear is a return of legislation in the USA and Germany from 1933 onwards which was effectively Keynesian. Economics for much of the last forty years has been non Keynesian. See Friedman, Hayek etc and what they vilified and look into who the most prominent economists have been since the end of WWII. It is statistically unexpected.

It was the banks that controlled their reserve ratios not the state. They found clever (or not so) financially engineered ways to subvert their captial ratio requirements. Banks are private instutuions. They create the money supply. It was their predatory lending behaviour that created the bubble. Blair/Brown simply allowed this to happen by emasculating the BoE’s powers to control the money supply.
Blair and Brown are/were libertarians, just as Cameron and Osborne are. They were/are good for business (especially for banker’s bonuses).

The point that is being made is that Labour made a lot of changes (e.g. minimum wage, Sure Start) that potentially benefited those in the middle income groups and below (I say potentially, because some were so cack-handed and bureucratic as to be counter-productive), but because of the fear of upsetting the prevailing neo-classical economic consensus the kept quiet about them.

Tory voters are more likely to be the better off, the self-employed, non-industrial private sector workers, and people from rural, suburban and southern parts of the country. Labour voters are more likely to be the working class, public sector workers, industrial workers, those from the North, Scotland, Wales and urban areas. That’s simplifying it obviously, but you get the point. Policies actually hardly enter into it, beyond the basic economic ones (which I suppose is why we’re all ignored!) Most people don’t choose their politics, they’re drawn to a party and then rationalise it. But I’m confused why you think the people in the Tory groups are stupider than the ones in the Labour groups.

Speaking of deluded left-wingers, just seen the make-up of the panel to hear from victims of the riots, ehm alas going on the fact that most of them seem to be as lefty as you can get, short of being sat in the BBC canteen, here is a summary of their findings to save money.

6. There is no correlation between the fact that almost all of those involved (up to the age of approximately 26 – 27), would have been a product of the Blair / Brown education system, any research indicating that society degenerated in the 13 years of Labour and “liberal / PC teaching” is circumstantial and the panel conclude that any entity blaming them is indeed a Nazi / Baby Eater / Pedo**.
