Screws Hacked Missing Milly’s Mobile

The Guardian are reporting this afternoon that the News of the World hacked into Milly Dowler’s voicemail and deleted messages so that pending ones could come into her inbox. In other words they tampered with evidence in a police investigation into a missing young girl for the sake of some column inches. Current News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was the Screws editor at the time. Someone will take the fall for this one.

This truly is beyond the pale – all involved in this aspect of the hacking need to go down – its one thing to eavesdrop on celebrity tittle-tattle (illegal though that is), but it’s entirely another to eavesdrop and tamper with the messages of a child who was kidnapped and murdered. Absolutely vile.

They keep quoting the Guardian without ANY verification to the truth while the police are keeping quiet. Sounds as if there is a Guardian police informer.
Sent a message to the PM programme today as to if the BBC is acting as the official mouthpiece for Labour, Guardian and unions. Steady Eddie is steady no more which is a shame as he has some talent – compared to the Toady Programme anyway.

Too early to come to any conclusions. Could be that the private detective employed by the NOW was more on top of electronic communications than the plod. Freeing up voice mail today to receive more messages seems bleeding obvious today but I ain’t so sure the plod would have realised it back then.

The truth is, is that Plod and the press did (do) work together to expose and convict crime. Is that such a bad thing?

On the assumption you’re not, one would therefore expect the outstanding members of the press at NoW to have immediately suggested to the police that they should increase Dowler’s voicemail capacity because it was full and preventing them listening to them all, thereby forcing them to destroy evidence.

Franky they should be shut down and Murdoch himself jailed. They are an affront to democracy and the rule of law. And I’m no lefty, just an average Tory who thinks the principle of freedom of the press is too important to be left to be dragged through the mud by Murdoch and his (alleged) criminal employees.

At that time the phone companies set default PINs, e.g. 0000, 1234, etc., which many people didn’t change. Likewise, many assumed, probably still do, that their VMs are only accessible from the handsets – so, far from being true ‘hacking’, what these scumbags were doing was dialling the target mobile from one phone (so the handset was on a call), then placing a second call at the same time that would go to VM, then using the default network PINs to access the messages.

Personally, I stopped using VM long ago because it’s very poor value – at the time the phone cos. got three times the revenue for one VM – once from the caller when they placed the call, once from the recipient when the message was recorded and then again when the message was listened to – at 25p plus VAT pm it was a goldmine for the phone cos.

Plenty on the left were uneasy about Blair’s and Brown’s cosy relationship with the Digger and NI, just as you’d hope many Tories are concerned about Cameron’s. Brown’s “I speak to Rupert every day” speech was revolting.

Whatever Murdoch’s personal beliefs, he’s no qualms about supporting the left when it suits his business ambitions, witness the Scottish Sun in the 80s as well as the backing for the (admittedly not that left) Nu-Labour project.

This will lead all the way to Cameron & Coulson and various freemasons.Tom Watson will follow this up in the House Of Commons no doubt.

PI Jonathan Rees used Masonic police connections in UK phone-hacking scandal
Phone-hacking scandal: Jonathan Rees obtained information using dark arts

Freemason set up network of corrupt police, customs officials, taxmen and bank staff to gain valuable information

Years ago, Jonathan Rees became a freemason. According to journalists and investigators who worked with him, he then exploited his link with the lodges to meet masonic police officers who illegally sold him information which he peddled to Fleet Street.

As one of Britain’s most prolific merchants of secrets, Rees expanded his network of sources by recruiting as his business partner Sid Fillery, a detective sergeant from the Metropolitan Police. Fillery added more officers to their network. Rees also boasted of recruiting corrupt Customs officers, a corrupt VAT inspector and two corrupt bank employees.

Other police contacts are said to have been blackmailed into providing confidential information. One of Rees’s former associates claims that Rees had compromising photographs of serving officers, including one who was caught in a drunken state with a couple of prostitutes and with a toilet seat around his neck.

It is this network of corruption which lies at the heart of yesterday’s claim in the House of Commons by Labour MP Tom Watson that Rees was targeting politicians, members of the royal family and even terrorist informers on behalf of Rupert Murdoch’s News International

I think perhaps the salient point here is to ask what was going through the minds of those who commissioned / undertook those particular interceptions (and of course the deletion of messages which may or may not have assisted the police but worst of all, brought false hope to the family). Did the NOTW actually think that they would be key to finding her before the police and therefore land the scoop of the decade? I doubt it.

The answer more likely rests with the fact that frankly, they didn’t give a toss about that poor girl. She was simply a story. She could have been my kid or yours or indeed a relative/friend. Were they bothered? Nope. There should be such a thing as ethical journalism – our society relies upon it as the only means whereby we can hold our government and actions of all in society to account by those who have the ability and skill to interpret events on our behalf and explain in words we can all understand. It is not a question of claiming a ‘moral high ground’.

This is one of the worst examples of so-called ‘journalism’ I have ever seen. There was no public or private interest in hacking into that child’s telephone. It was devoid of any integrity of purpose. It also is not about left or right. All editors (and indeed bloggers) of whatever party persuasion have a duty of care not to abuse their position. This story is an example of an abject failure at the highest level and the very least required is an immediate sacking and hopefully a prosecution for interfering with a criminal investigation.

I still find it odd that when the phone-hacking thing first came to light, and the NotW journo and private investigator were gaoled, the whole thing was brushed under the carpet in Parliament. I seem to recall Hattie Harperson giving a sort of “Move along, nothing to see” answer to a question in the House about News International’s possible activities.

However, now that NI have shifted their political allegiance, it’s a big deal. Odd, that.

So in 2003 -2004 just who was in power? Of course the BBC would like you to think that it was the Tories in power and Andy Coulson the root of all evil. Nothing further from the truth of course, who gives a fuck that a twat like Prescott got hacked because of his extra marital shagging perhaps Chris Bryant should be more concerned about taking pictures of himself in badly skidmaked knickers to attract men rather than some hack trying to find out who his latest boyfriend is.

Yes, I guess the phone company would be the easiest route for a hacker. As far as the great, the good and the famous are concerned surely all the main organs of media have extensive contact lists for these people for when they need a quote or invite someone in to the studio etc. It would be easy to get access to these lists as they must be duplicated at all the newspapers, publicity agents, BBC etc. and will be in digital form which is easy to bung on a memory stick.

If the notw hacked into the phone and realised that the answerphone was full and so couldn’t receive any new messages, then what the fuck were the police doing?

The police, by their total incompetence of understanding anything at all about how mobile phones work, could have missed a message from Milly if she’d been alive because they were too fucking stupid to either clear-down the messages (logging them first) or to ask the phone company to enlarge the number of messages that can be stored.

So, yes, if this story is true then whoever did/agreed-to this at the notw is fucking evil, but it also proves a mind-blowing amount of neglience by the police.

Police (asking bellfield’s neighbour) “Thanks for your time, by the way, do you know who lives next door? We’ve tried knocking on his door every day for the last month but nobody answers.”
