In other words they tampered with evidence in a police investigation into a missing young girl for the sake of some column inches. Current News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was the Screws editor at the time. Someone will take the fall for this one.

At that time the phone companies set default PINs, e.g. 0000, 1234, etc., which many people didn’t change. Likewise, many assumed, probably still do, that their VMs are only accessible from the handsets – so, far from being true ‘hacking’, what these scumbags were doing was dialling the target mobile from one phone (so the handset was on a call), then placing a second call at the same time that would go to VM, then using the default network PINs to access the messages.
Personally, I stopped using VM long ago because it’s very poor value – at the time the phone cos. got three times the revenue for one VM – once from the caller when they placed the call, once from the recipient when the message was recorded and then again when the message was listened to – at 25p plus VAT pm it was a goldmine for the phone cos.
An awful lot of people don’t change their PIN from the network default when they get a new phone/contract. All you need to do is call the number then dial in using the code. Most mobile networks will now force you to change it when you first set it up.

I think perhaps the salient point here is to ask what was going through the minds of those who commissioned / undertook those particular interceptions (and of course the deletion of messages which may or may not have assisted the police but worst of all, brought false hope to the family). Did the NOTW actually think that they would be key to finding her before the police and therefore land the scoop of the decade? I doubt it.
The answer more likely rests with the fact that frankly, they didn’t give a toss about that poor girl. She was simply a story. She could have been my kid or yours or indeed a relative/friend. Were they bothered? Nope. There should be such a thing as ethical journalism – our society relies upon it as the only means whereby we can hold our government and actions of all in society to account by those who have the ability and skill to interpret events on our behalf and explain in words we can all understand. It is not a question of claiming a ‘moral high ground’.
This is one of the worst examples of so-called ‘journalism’ I have ever seen. There was no public or private interest in hacking into that child’s telephone. It was devoid of any integrity of purpose. It also is not about left or right. All editors (and indeed bloggers) of whatever party persuasion have a duty of care not to abuse their position. This story is an example of an abject failure at the highest level and the very least required is an immediate sacking and hopefully a prosecution for interfering with a criminal investigation.

If the notw hacked into the phone and realised that the answerphone was full and so couldn’t receive any new messages, then what the fuck were the police doing?
The police, by their total incompetence of understanding anything at all about how mobile phones work, could have missed a message from Milly if she’d been alive because they were too fucking stupid to either clear-down the messages (logging them first) or to ask the phone company to enlarge the number of messages that can be stored.
So, yes, if this story is true then whoever did/agreed-to this at the notw is fucking evil, but it also proves a mind-blowing amount of neglience by the police.
Or a level of collusion between police and a private company that is tantamount to conspiracy
I wouldn’t credit the police with the intelligence to be able to conspire in this instance.
Remember that the police were too stupid to pick up the phone to call a local estate agent to find out who was renting the “empty” house when they were doing their house-to-house calls a stone’s throw away from where the abduction happened.
It would have gone something like this:
Police (asking bellfield’s neighbour) “Thanks for your time, by the way, do you know who lives next door? We’ve tried knocking on his door every day for the last month but nobody answers.”
Neighbour: “don’t know his name, but we used to see him every day, and we haven’t seem him since Milly went missing.”
Police: “ok, thanks for that, we’ll just forget about it and pretend he’s on holiday then.”
