Flowidea, for example, a City-based investment company, has given £484,981 to the Opposition since early 2001. William Hague, MP, states, in his members’ interests, that Flowidea “makes financial support available to my office”.
This company has no website, its telephone number is not registered with directory enquiries and when The Telegraph rang the office listed by Companies House as its registered address no-one had even heard of Flowidea.
In fact, Flowidea is a subsidiary of the investment bank Arbuthnot Securities, which is owned by Secure Trust Banking Group, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Over the summer, the Tories also accepted £175,000 from Meekland Limited, a holding company involved in areas as diverse as horse breeding, music and real estate.
Meekland doesn’t provide a UK trading address with Companies House but lists the address of its Surrey-based accountant. Meekland is actually owned by Brompton Investments, which is registered in the Cayman Islands.
However, what of the biggest donor of the bunch, IIR Limited, the conference and training company, which has given a collossal £1.7m to the Conservatives since 2001?
Bizarrely, when The Telegraph contacted IIR, a spokesman denied that the company had made donations to the Conservative Party.
“All the donations made to the Party have been personal donations, made by our chairman, Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay,” said an IIR spokesman.
Tell that to the Electoral Commission, which maintains that all of the cash donations were made by IIR. The company and Lord Laidlaw declined to comment further.
Not all the Conservatives’ corporate donors live in the shadows.
The second-largest business donor over the past two years is Intercapital Private Group, the investment vehicle 23 per cent owned by Michael Spencer, the chief executive of ICAP, the world’s largest money broker. Spencer is one of the wealthiest men in the City, with a personal fortune of about £400m. In the last tax year he received £9.6m in pay, bonuses and dividends.
Other donors include Fidelity, the fund manager, which has given more than £100,000 to the Tories since July, and J C Bamford Excavators, the manufacturer of the iconic yellow diggers.
Funds have also been donated by Stringfellow Restaurants, Britain’s best-known table-side-dancing venue, run by the ebullient Peter Stringfellow

The Unions apparently over recent years have financed Labour with Union members funds to the tune of £100 m – Gordon Brown received about £10 Million of union members funds to fight the last election.

That said, it wasn’t really a good result for Miliband and Labour, apart from in Wales. It was better than might have been expected for the Conservatives, and slightly worse than predicted for the Lib Dems. In Scotland, it was an absolute disaster for Labour – if the economy improves over the next four years, they could be fighting an uphill battle, and they could have a real problem at the next General Election.
Labour’s only real hope is to admit and apologise for the mess they made of the economy, and demonstrate that they’ve learned the lessons. A good first move would be to banish to outer darkness all those shadow ministers who had anything to do with economic matters in their last government. Given the nature of the way in which they select their front bench personnel, Ed Miliband’s hands are somewhat tied in that regard; he has a major problem.

I think that if the referendum to destroy the UK does happen, then surely the WHOLE of the UK should get a vote in it? Or is a tiny parasitic minority going to get the only say.
Also, of the parasite decides to become independent of its host, it should lose ALL UK subsidy, ALL money from the English oil fields and all Westminster MPs and NONE of them should get a severance package, or pension from being a Westminster MP.
Also they should be classed as an entirely new country, with its own representation at the UN, and as such have to apply for EU membership if it wishes to be a member and therefore not get any EU subsidy until it is a member.
The Scots are not interested in being a stand-alone nation. They are rooting around for the best host to leach off. The truth is that they believe that they would get a much bigger subsidy from the EU as an independent member state, (I know that is self-contradictory) than as a region within the UK.
The EU will probably let them too. Pretty soon the ‘PIGS’ countries would be the ‘PIGGSS’ countries.

Cameron calls an election before the legislation on election dates receives the Royal Assent for 5 year mandatory parliaments..the Libdems get annihilated….Cameron returns with small overall majority or Labour do …..either way the LibDems are fucked good n’ proper. They gambled on winning the AV to guarantee them always holding the balance of power…they picked 5th May the same day as the elections for local councils in England and parliament and assemblies in Scotland,Wales & NI to firstly ensure that they kept criticism on cost to a minimum and also maximising the turnout.They would have been better to postpone the AV Referendum until after these elections so that people would either not turn out in sufficient numbers(would favour the “YES” campaign) and not make it a vote against the LibDems..they miscalculated and lost and this of replacing Clegg and walking out of Coalition would be another poor judgement call. The laugh on Clegg is that he could have quite honourably said that in view of his pledge on tuition fees that he and his party could not in conscience support any rise in fees as it would be a breach of trust and that rather as Dep PM vote against he personally would have to abstain on the issue but give his MPs a free vote.But he didn’t and has now reaped the result of the electorate thinking that the LibDems can’t keep their pledges especially one so high profile that notwithstanding the parlous state of the economy he should not have in conscience broken

Seeing the BBC deal with the AV result was almost as good as watching them being mystified why the Tory vote had held up as it had and that they’d increased their councillors and had a net gain in councils they control… The fragrant Laura Kuennsberg also made pretty short shrift of all the bullshitting politicians appearing and even put that old “Pro” David Dimbleby in his place when he tried to interject and stop her analysis at one point….also it was a pleasure to watch Emily Maitless though manipulating her figure(s) in that foxy tight red dress in the Vote 2011 Programme so much more satisfying that Peter Snow’s Swingometer of old

Upon closer examination of the council results clearly the milliband strategy is a complete failure. Had the labour party held their hands up said ‘it was us guv’ and rightly claimed some forgiveness that the banking crisis wasn’t just theirs to be blamed for…they could have taken up the policy alternative stance and fought on the detail to re-establish some measure of credibilty.
As it is they have adopted the denial routine slamming the scale of cuts when their own would have only cut a billion less..and still haven’t offered any credible directional alternatives……a completely risible position to adopt and one for which up and down the country the voters they want to come home just see as cynical two faced double talking labour ethos perpetuated.
The lib-dem collapse is wholly expected….Clegg could not have really believed he could be deputy PM when his first television appearance transformed his election but he very soon realised those easy vote winners …such as tuition fees and AV might haunt him when he found what the realities of being in government really do to those glib soundbite strategies.
