This morning’s Guardian leader lambasted the violent rhetoric they claim is to blame for the tragic shootings in Tuscon. However true to form they haven’t always practiced what they preach. Take for example this picture of a hanging effigy of Nick Clegg taken outside the Guardian’s King Cross HQ. Did any Guardianista step up and slam that? No.
Nor did they have any problem with one of their own using shooting rhetoric during the election. Say Cameron had been shot or attacked, would the lefty twitterati have riled against Toynbee for suggesting the LibDems and Labour needed to “turn their guns on the real enemy”? No of course not. While having a debate about what is an acceptable way to describe your political opponents is one thing, doing so on the back of an attempt to politicise the actions of a deranged lunatic is a new low.

Well it’s like this, the coalition are really making things a lot worse because of the 2.5% rise in VAT. Now what we proposed is a rise in corporation tax, national insurance, a graduate tax and ever higher fuel taxes, as a way of painlessly reducing the deficit over the fiscal term, by a whopping twenty o’clock.
Instead of using the revenue from all those new taxes to reduce the deficit, I think we should have used it to buy more shiny things in Labour constituencies. In fact, if we added borrowed money to the revenue money, we could buy bigger and shinier things in Labour constituencies, and this would add growth to the economy.
The BBC are in PR mode. They would like us to believe that everything Ed Miliband says is the word of God. Nothing he says must be challenged. Everything he says must be obeyed. His disciples, the Union leaders – who haven’t appeared on radio or TV for the past 13 years – must now be broadcast every day repeating the Sacred Word According to Ed. Alan Yentob has promised to Fix It for Ed.
