First Government Payroll-Vote Resignation

News is breaking that Michael Crockart, LibDem member for  Edinburgh West, and PPS to Scotland Secretary Michael Moore is the first to resign over the tuition-fees vote.

Given the unknown-man status of even his boss, it is thought at this stage the Coalition will survive.

As no-one’s heard of the blighter or his boss let us mourn instead the loss to politics of a most spectacular 1970s-era moustache.

He seems to me to have principles and having signed that pledge, is standing by his commitment.
      Kudos.

Seeming to be the oddball here, so I should stress that I’m no Lib-Dem nor related to Gordon (so like to think that I have all my marbles). Just approving that somebody is principled enough to uphold his promises, and just because he is an MP that is under the radar, that does not alter the fact that he is not a Cable-ditherer, push-me-pull-you..

A number of Gordon Brown’s colleagues now believe the time is right for him to play a more prominent Westminster role.

One backbencher told The Herald: “It’s time he came back. He’s a big beast and has much to offer.”

Another Scottish colleague said that Mr Brown had quite understandably been keeping a low profile following the election defeat and had, admirably, been concentrating on constituency work, but that he had personally been trying to persuade him to spend more time at Westminster.

A third Labour MP described the former premier as “a great talent” and said colleagues were trying to persuade him to return to the cut and thrust of Westminster politics, adding: “There is a mood to draw him back into the family. The longer he stays away, the more difficult it will be for him to continue.

“We understand that it’s difficult for him because he was smashed flat, but there is still a great warmth towards Gordon and an effort is going on to draw him back in.”

Another Labour MP said: “I would not be surprised if in the New Year we see more of him. It’s difficult because he does not want to overshadow the work of Ed Mliband. Anything he does say can be misinterpreted, so he has to be careful.”

Priceless, you sum up the ridiculous party precisely. By caring what you really mean is increasing tax, except that does not sound so nice and fluffy does it? BTW, public debt is still rising by £3billion a week, but hey Lib Dims don’t ‘care’ about serious stuff like debt, do they?

Has the BBC just been spoofed live on World at One? They introduced an interview with Michael Crockart. The speaker sounded a bit manic and spoke in a Scouse accent, which is odd as Crockart was born and educated in Scotland and sits for a Scottish seat. Is this a Guy Kewney moment?

Julian Huppert MP for Cambridge (LD) has publicly expressed his intention to vote against any plans to raise tution fees. A local LD activist, Jonathan Chatfield, is campaigning for a scrapping of tuition fees. He has written to The Minister for Universites – Conservative MP David Willetts – calling on him to cancel government plans to raise the cap on tuition fees.

Commenting on the plans Jonathan said: “The scrapping of tuition fees is a key Liberal Democrat policy. However, we need ot accept that we did not win May’s general election so we are unable to enact every Lib Dem policy”.

Perhaps he should write to Vince Cable for clarification as to whether this is or is not LD policy.
