The Labour Party Owes the Taxpayer £43,000

There’s an interesting anomaly in the election spending data that was published today. No prizes for guessing that the Tories outspent Labour 2:1, but it’s even bleaker for the reds. It seems that Labour were so broke they ended up with a government funded overdraft. Victoria Street haven’t paid six invoices,  five of which are for reimbursement for Ministers use of their government cars for party political purposes:

It seems it was not realised until September that Labour had only paid for a fraction of their party political use of ministerial cars. It’s a little odd that the use of the cars wasn’t declared at the time, were Labour using ministerial cars without admitting they were going to campaign events? Given their casual disregard for taxpayers money in office it wouldn’t really come as a surprise. The £43,000 black-hole needs to be cleared though, not that it will dent the other one they left.

Porkbusters (because somebody has to fucking do it) says:

A backbench motion condemning the “unnecessarily high costs and inadequacies” of the new system and calling for a “simpler” alternative will be debated later.

Ipsa has tried to dampen criticism by declining to publish rejected claims – reported to number 1,574 so far – until the MPs and staff have got more used to the system.

Prime Minister David Cameron claimed £2,581.13, including £2,408.75 for an annual subscription to the Parliamentary Resources Unit, which conducts research for mainly Conservative MPs. Mr Cameron made six further claims, all for stationery. They included £94 on House of Commons headed A4 paper.

Labour leader Ed Miliband claimed £2.066.27, including for three payments of £550 for monthly rent on accommodation. He also paid an “office maintenance charge” of £295.84 and two office cleaning bills of £19.09. Mr Miliband spent £82.25 on a photocopier toner cartridge.

MPs were paid £3.1m in expenses during the first three and a half months after the general election.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority – which runs the new system – has published 22,000 claims paid out between 7 May and 31 August.

The highest total paid to an MP was £20,752 to Tory Keith Simpson. Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn had the lowest at £8.70.

And who is responsible for not submitting the bills on time in accordance with the law – who was in charge 21 days after the election??

Perhaps Guido should apologise to the Labour Party for his false accusations – or at least give his black ops team a good kicking. If he wants a real story perhaps he should ask himself why the Tory expenditure totals appear a little light given how they vastly overspent the other parties.
