+ + + 23 Year-Old Student Arrested + + +

So the news wires now have it.

Our target was arrested earlier in Cambridgeshire.

Guido would put money on our laughing boy being from Anglia Ruskin University Students Union…

UPDATE 18.00 : At this moment it is not clear which of the two  extinguisher brandishing yobs has been arrested.

Probably one of the baying mob that I faced at Kings during the hustings.

It is not by coincidence that the UK educates its greatest traitors at Cambridge. Nest of Marxists

Agree with your general thrust, OH, as ever – but ‘Anglia Ruskin’ is really Cambridge Poly as was, not ‘Cambridge’ at all.

Not that I should wish to demean it: I derived a few lucrative part-time contracts from it some years ago and I remain grateful for the subsidy to my general hedonism that it afforded.

But Ruskin himself was not only a loony (everyone knows the one about him swooning when, on his wedding-night, he discovered female pubic hair – those Italian marble statues had not prepared him for that!) but a bit of a four-letter fellow to boot: when invited to Bradford by its wool-merchants to advise on their proposed new wool exchange he insulted them roundly at a public dinner given in his honour. A simple note declining the invitation would have sufficed.

I think you find that golf-course management is exactly the sort of skill our young people need to play a leading part in the UK’s export drive.

          • Pete Raliss says:

Without joking, golf course management is actually quite an involved topic, involving agronomy, fine turf care, pesticides, water conservation and many other disciplines. It is a useful qualification with which to find employment, and increasingly overseas! Britain does lead the world in this field. The older greenkeeper may be a bitter hairy arsed old bastard, but the new breed coming through are pretty skilled technical types and like to be known as course superintendents, earning a decent wage for a proper job.

            That is all.

      Statement on Anglia Ruskin website:

We, Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union, organised for a group of 200 students to attend the NUS national demonstration in London. During the demonstration Anglia Ruskin students acted respectfully and protested peacefully. However, on Thursday 11th November we learnt that an incident had occurred allegedly involving an Anglia Ruskin student. Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union does not condone any act of violence nor supports the action that took place on Wednesday 10th November at 30 Millbank, London. We will do all we can to assist.

        The Bottle Fed Triplet says:

The rate of acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s/s. If a person drops a piece of fabricated steel with a mass of 7.8 Kg from 70 metres straight down, work out:

        1. The time taken from release for the item to strike the copper’s head.
        2. The cost of the inquest and subsequent investigations.
        3. The costs for the widow’s pension and compensation for the bereaved children of the copper.
        5. What percentage of time will actually be served following the appeal and sentence reduction for good behaviour.
        6. How many whingers that will rush to print claiming that despite killing a copper in cold blood the wicked miscreant was misunderstood and martyred by reactionary forces.

This question is worth 25 marks.

You should factor terminal velocity into the equation!

          • The Bottle Fed Triplet says:

Speed is not as important as the force exerted by mass and acceleration when it comes to the damage liklely to be caused when connecting with the unfortunate recipient of said extinguisher.

        • 170
          Anonymous says:

It’ll never connect, if it’s starting from 70m straight down. Gravity, see?

          Smig says:

          70 metres travelled.
assuming start veolocity at 70m above ground level to be 0m/s
assuming copper is standing up and is 1.8m tall
I don’t have the co-efficient of drag for a fire extinguisher travelling through air and will have to assume that it is negligible for this calculation.

time taken = sqrt (2xdistance/acceleration due to gravity)

          t = sqrt (2×68.2/9.81)

          t = 3.73 seconds

          • Smig says:

velocity after 3.73 seconds have elapsed will be

            3.73 * 9.81 m/s

            36 m/s or, approximately 82mph

          • Audemus Dicere says:

I see Smig just beat me to it (and also deducted the copper’s assumed height from the calculation – I took the 70 metres to be the distance to the top of the copper’s head, since you also need to allow for the height of the “student’s” hand above the top of the building at release).

I trust Smig will agree with my suggested punishment!

PS Apologies for not showing the working as per the question. I have deducted 5 marks from myself…

          • Smig says:

Audemus: It’s a wonder that amongst the windowlickers and apologists that habitually inhabit these comments, that I have found someone with an understanding of mathematics and physics :) This has made my day.

Your suggested punishment is worthy of consideration.

I’d like to take it once stage further.

Chain the guilty idiot to the floor with manacles and ankle braces.
Suspend a water filled fire extinguisher 70m above the idiot.

            Hand the idiot an axe.

A countdown will begin. At the end of the countdown, the extinguisher will be released and plummet towards the idiot.

If the idiot escapes from the manacles by axing off one his own limbs in order to escape the falling fire extinguisher, he may go free.

            Cheers!

          • Audemus Dicere says:

Cheers Smig – it’s good to have a nice pratical example to get the old brain cells working again! I agree with your elaboration of the punishment – it would add a certain element of entertainment for Pay TV purposes…

          • Smig says:

            Audemus:

I’m not so sure about the pay-per-view idea.

The corrupt and bankrupt emperors of Rome used the Circus Maximus and Flavian Ampitheatre to distract the proles. Sounds a bit too similar to Murdoch’s Football Thunderdome.

Although I do have some practical knowledge of broadcasting. It’s possible to get all the gubbins that make a TV studio work in a box about as big as a large suitcase these days.

          Answers to Bottle Fed’s questions:

          Q1 = 3.78 seconds

          QQ2-6 answer themselves.

          For additional marks:

Force of said object hitting said copper = 76.52 Newtons

Velocity at point of impact = 37.08 m/s (approximately 83 miles per hour).

          Suitable punishment for said offender?

To be hit in the face with a fire extinguisher travelling at 83 miles per hour to see how funny he then thinks it is.

          • Smig says:

Q1. You didn’t allow for the height of the copper.

          • Audemus Dicere says:

Indeed Smig – but please see my note above about needing to add back in the height of the student’s hand above the building at release – so I just fudged it and used 70 metres ;-)

          You ignored angular momentum.

As did the psycho who threw who threw the extinguisher off the roof.

I really hope that whoever is arrested for extinguisher throwing is charged with attempted murder – since I genuinely believe that they committed it.

          • Hanny Faddock says:

The building was clearly not high enough for the object thrown to reach its maximum possible speed. Had it been launched from a few storeys higher the extinguisher would have been travelling at terminal velocity of 120mph (give or take).

Which might not make much of a dent in a thick ACPO-type copper’s head.

          • Another Engineer says:

The terminal velocity of a fire extinguisher will likely be a lot more than 120mph – the exact value depends on the mass of the object and its drag coefficient. A water extinguisher will have quite a low drag coefficient dropped vertically, and has a large mass.

However, the maths is irrelevant. It would have been well above the “Terminal” velocity for anyone hit by it.

After all to a zealot it’s mayhem that matters not others people’s wellbeing.

Interestingly, gun control laws and self defense laws in Venezuela are quite strict. Musn’t be in a position to fend off the righteous rent-a-mob occupying your private property or breaking up your political meeting while the police just stand by and watch.

It’s not the cost of the plate glass that makes this interesting (although it’s probably going to cost some serious money). Windows break all the time by accident. No, it stands out because it looks like it sets a precendent for orchestrated intimidation.

Had the fire extuingisher killed somebody they would have been killed at random without any trial or representation. On the other hand, the society which you detest will grant the alleged perpetrator a fair trial and probably legal aid as well.

The Government was elected in a legitimate election and has to reduce expenditure because there is insufficient income to cover it. The majority of the population agrees with the spending cuts because they know that you cannot borrow more and more for an unlimited period of time; sooner or later debts have to be paid.

The Leadership of the NUS, in supporting violent demonstration, is saying that it will use random acts of terror to coerce the Government and the majority it represents, into changing policy and continuing to pay money it hasn’t got to give students a free education.

The real problem here is that these kids think they are going to do a “May ’68″ like the French…

But different times and different places…

These students are spoilt brats who think that the world owes them a living…

And, in any case, the leaders of May ’68 in France are now :

Mr Bernard Kouchner, French Foreign Minister and millionaire married to a TV presenter who now earns € 400,000 pet year as France’s external broadcasting representative (!)

Mr Danny Cohn-Bendit, millionaire “Ecologist” member of the European Parliament (with all the tax free benefits etc he has had for years)

Mr Serge July, millionaire ex boss of Libération, French leftie newspaper recently purchased by the Rothschilds

Mr Bernard Henri Levy (he was a Maoist) multimillionaire owner of vast South American forests married to an ex-movie star

One criticism – he might have explained what makes up the figure of £4.8 trillion for ND. How much is bond issue, how much PFI liabilities, how much contingent liability for public pensions, and so on. Just stating a figure without justifying it slightly weakened his argument.

The most frightening part was Durkin interviewing several MPs. He asked them if they knew what the figure was for the National Debt. Some of them didn’t know, some quoted the deficit figure thinking it was total debt.

bob crowe tried the same thing with pensioners not long ago. We want mass protests, he said. We want you all to walk out onto our fast moving M roads and sit down in protest at the cuts. Like the nus , he’d have stood at the side of the road and run away at the first sight of carnage. We need something a little more sensible here. Like taking universities back to educate the brightest amongst us for professions that need degrees and letting the rest pursue their goals through vocational courses.

There’s nothing wrong in that. I know of young men in London who got professional degrees in surveying and law . They have a friend who’s a plumber who earns more than they do , from hard work and good business sense ( oh and a mum who acts as his company secretary!)

As we are just beginning to find out from this current crop of labour educated uni students , bliar’s dumbed down degree for the masses (50% and all that), is not producing worthwhile employable people, or people that are ever likely to go out there and form their own businesses.

The danger of Labour getting anywhere near power again, either as a coalition with what’s left of the LibDems or minority hung parliament will concentrate minds wonderfully and probably boost the Tory vote well above the mid 40s.

And another thing, the Poll Tax riots which are commonly seen by the Left as some sort of triumph, merely turned people off and Major won the general election a couple of years later.

Who are you leftwing idiots kidding lol, Labour aren’t getting back into power anytime soon and if they did who would buy the debt?

The EU can’t afford it after looking at the Irish Books and realising the micks have been taking the piss literally for the last 13 years.

China can’t afford it as it’s gearing up for an economic war with the USA to keep it’s exports going.

No one can afford to bail us out, we’re up shit creek without a paddle, even if Labour got in, the austerity measures would be even worse as other lenders balked at them before the election, the same election that Ed Milliband wrote the manifesto for lol.

Seriously your fucked for the next five years get over it, if Labour got back into power and the money started coming in then true revolution would soon happen.

The lower and working classes would decimate you middle class socialists once survival instincts kick in.

It’s not 1917 anymore, none of you will ever be the next Lenin, even the ‘dumb’ proles have enough working education and ego for themselves now to realise they can seize power themselves without you middle class and upper class wannabes trying to leech your way in on the act.

    Atlas shrugged says:

As my old gran used to say.

“If you resort to violence you have already lost the argument.”

My old gran was a very wise women, who lived for a very long time, mainly because of her wisdom.

It has long since been a complete fallacy that violence EVER got the ordinary classes anything that the ruling class did not already intend to give them.

However it has long since been a well established historical fact that even the threat of any kind of violent reaction from ordinary citizens that had not been sanctioned or subversively organized by the establishment itself, was always meet with savagery and then more repression.

Anarchy is only acceptable to the establishment, if it is the establishment itself that is secretly promoting or encouraging it. Our universities are part of the establishment, and so is much, if not all of the thinking that go’s on within them.

If however tax-payers, or such like were miss-guided enough to engaged in anything like what happened at Conservative HQ, the streets would swiftly be flowing with protesters blood. More cracked heads then could easily be counted, in fact.

For you can take this as a certainty. The establishment already has the future foot-solders of the establishment, namely students, well and truly in their pocket, which is why they love them so very much.

The problem for the ordinary tax payers that pay for the entire show, is that the establishment is in the tax-payers pocket. Which is why they fear the ordinary tax-payer getting out of control, more then you could possibly imagine.

We all I hope know what happened to Watt Tyler, I hope. It was not a pretty sight I understand.

Prepared to concede this, but from memory, the tuition fees were brought in under new-labour, abolishing the grants that were previously available prior to 97/98.

Add to that several questionable wars and economic melt down, it seems strange that all this venom is directed towards a relatively new administration – a government who have been out of the driving seat for over a decade.

Notwithstanding, the individual who behaved with such disregard for life and limb should, in any sane country, face some form of legal process.
