+ + + Woolas Guilty + + +

The Labour MP recently appointed to Red Ed’s Shadow Cabinet has been found guilty on two counts of breaking the Representation of the People Act by making false election statements. No appeal, by-election in Oldham imminent.

Developing…

UPDATE: Labour HQ is silent but the distancing has already begun. Lord Falconer just told the BBC he doesn’t believe that Woolas will be the candidate at the by-election. Red Ed is in a very tricky spot here…

UPDATE II: Woolas is making noises about attempting a Judicial Review. Hope he’s got a pretty penny…

Students have to pay interest on their loans why not MPs?? Parliament needs to have a good clear out.

Guido, have the Lib Dem MPs made the same false representation about university fees? Individual MPs (like Clegg) made written pledges in university towns to win their seats. It seems to me they have committed the same offence.

The standard Labour approach to election cheating is that at worst nothing will be done about it. Having the election declared void must show that the ruling class are getting scared about what’s coming their way. So they should be but these pathetic tokens will not save them.

They will fight every by election as two separate parties and this is why labour will probably win this by-election.

no, mate; it’s vital to our democracy that people standing as candidates don’t lie and smear their opponents with bullshit that they know is completely untrue.

You can speak freely, but you can’t libel or slander people just because you’re in the labour party.

Mind you, if that’s the courts’ findings, then virtually every constituency that currently has a labour MP should be up for re-election, because labour MPs have spent the last 13 years being complicit in cooking the country’s books and lying on every front possible and telling people that the tories will kill your granny with a mechete and eat new born babies (ok, so that last bit’s not true, but it’s pretty close).

He first won his seat for Labour in the 1997 general election, having contested the predecessor Littleborough and Saddleworth seat at a by-election in 1995,[2] which was marked by Labour’s particularly vicious and personal campaign, attacking the Liberal Democrat candidate, Chris Davies, as, “high on tax and soft on drugs”.[6] Lord Mandelson admitted in his autobiography that they’d gone “on the attack”, writing “After the campaign was over, not only our opponents but some in Labour would denounce our ‘negative’ tactics in highlighting Lib Dem front-runner Chris Davies’ support for higher taxes and a Royal Commission to liberalise drugs laws. For tactical reasons, I felt we had had little choice.”[7]

How would judges get ‘elected’? Would they need any legal qualifications or experience? Probably not in Richards’ little world. In his inclusive society no doubt anyone could just put themselves forward as a candidate – like MPs, for example.

Next the prat will be wanting to ‘elect’ surgeons, teachers, actuaries, chiropodists, the military etc.
