I do not condone the Catholic’s abuse of kids, but at least they are being forced to face up to it, have apologised for it and have taken measure to try to stamp it out in future. They have not gone far enough, but they are doing something and that should be recognised and welcomed.

The only movement against rampant islam is the Roman Catholic church (although, sometimes, they seem to contradict themselves ). I welcome the Pope’s visit and hope that he can wash the veil from peoples eyes and recognise that we are at war with an evil that is more insidious than even communism. How long did it take for the princes and kings of Europe to agree to launch a crusade against islam; years, because no one wanted to confront the situation. I see many similarities with what is happening today. Hopefully, we will soon launch a proper crusade, in favour of Christianity and against the forces of evil, lead by muslims.

That is no secret. If I recall correctly the Latin Rite Church only started the requirement of priestly celebacy in the 11th or 12th century. It was felt that a priest should not have “carnal knowledge” of his wife on the day he celebrated the Mass. Up until that time the Mass was a weekly celebration but once it because daily it rather put the mockers on being married.
There are still married priests within the wider Catholic church. They are with Eastern Rite churches. The priests may bemarried but they cannot become bishops.

I find it so sad that with all the progress we have made in physics and tech- nology there are still people on this ‘universe’ made earth, who still have to use religon as a crutch. If we spent half as much on educating people on the real and scientifically proven reason we are where we are today , as the devisive religons of mankind spend on promoting there culture of fear (hell and damnation, fire and brimstone) there would be a total re-think on the reason for conflict around the world and that would at least get rid of the religeous perverts and make them just perverts. I can’t stand the corrupt authoritarianism of the Catholic Church. Time and time again the church and the pope have been found wanting, it is an organisation full of humans just as weak and fallible as the rest of us.
We should bow to God alone.

The last thing we need is more bloody religion. Any serious study of Christian theology (I have a degree in it) shows it to be totally lacking in logic and a completely unsuitable basis for anything. Let’s face it, catholicism is about a power trip for men who get off on wearing dresses and lording it over the ignorant masses by mumbo-jumbo, and always has been. The rest are all pale attempts to do the same thing.

No point in banning it as lunatics will still follow it whilst doing a “Frenchie” and ignoring things they don’t like. e.g. Italy, the most Catholic European country, happens to have the lowest birth rate. Not exactly in the “breed for world domination” exultations of Papery is it?
Humanising the priesthood and allowing them to marry and breed would be a useful starting point. No chance.
Load of rubbish. Young Master Fawkes was clearly not paying attention in history or RE. Succession from James VI and I was Charles I, II and James II, the last claim by a Catholic monarch, so the indignation at the execution of Guido senior is misplaced. C of E broke from Rome under Henry VIII not at the Reformation, and is a compromise institution since the upheavals of the Civil War and Restoration…if it fragments, followers will head for Rome or to one of the many other Protestant or Methodist traditions, rather than a unified Christian Catholic faith..at least they won’t have their noses cropped nowadays. And, since the Peace of Westphalia and the Glorious Revolution, the Catholic Church is irrelevant in public life in Europe, even in Ireland, and even if restored as the established church in the UK. Where are His Grace’s ashes now …they would put us right.
That is not the narrative that works.
James VI and I is an inconsistent target. His mother was Mary Queen of Scots, eventually beheaded by the order of Elizabeth, and also known as ‘Queen Mary II’ to Catholics who saw her as the legitimate successor to Queen Mary, also known as ‘Bloody Mary’ (but not particularly bloody by the standards of the time).
James I was far from a bad king…he did well to survive the many plots and assassination attempts of the Scottish court (no wonder so many backstabbing political types hail from north of Hadrian’s Wall). His main preoccupations were survival, a relative degree of peace, and trying to keep the lid on religious divisions…he tolerated quiet Catholicism to a greater degree than Puritanism. The only thing the Gunpowder plot did was to allow him to put up taxes.
James’s lineage extended to crypto-Catholic Charles I (born in Dunfermline and as useless as Brown), Charles II and James II – last Catholic monarch of England, overthrown in the Glorious Revolution (one of the best things that happened to this country and led to the Bill of Rights and enormous prosperity).
As to the Church of England…it’s a curious hybrid of Catholicism and Protestantism, tweaked by all sorts of people since Henry VIII dumped his wives and grabbed the monasteries, and if the various pressures proved too much then the High Church would head for Rome and the Low Church and Broad Church wings would do something else. A restored Catholic Church of England would probably be disestablished (the Act of Settlement being an apparent legislative nightmare) and would be outnumbered by Presbyterians, Protestants, Methodists, Baptists and all the other varieties of reformed Christianity adhered to in Britain.
It’s all irrelevant anyway. Might as well bang on about the injustice of what happened to Protestants – the Huguenots and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes etc. Rulers stopped listening to the fellow in the Vatican some centuries ago and the Established Church in England is established in name only, since all that ecclesiastical law and stuff was binned. Even Catholics turn a selective blind eye to the more inconvenient obligations, at least most of them that I have known. If the Anglican church collapsed tomorrow, then most of us wouldn’t notice and those affected would do their own thing.
Finally, I understand the potent symbolism of Prince Charles kneeling to the Pope, like his near-namesake emperor a millenium ago….but it means nothing. It is protocol, ceremony of some sort, and I suspect he would kneel or bow to the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Grand Mufti of wherever in similar circumstances. Not sure about the Queen, as Supreme Governor of the C of E, but I bet she won’t be kneeling tomorrow up here in Edinburgh.
But some things never change. The church is charging ‘pilgrims’ £25 to go to the Glasgow mass, ridiculous for a state visit…the church, UK and well-heeled philanthropists should have made this free for all. Even Jesus didn’t charge for his loaves and fishes. hmm…. might get out there and sell some indulgences, dispensations and pardons…
