The BBC just spent twenty-two minutes of a half hour news program talking about Coulson. Tom Watson has been granted emergency questions in the House and the lefty press are determined to keep this going. There is nothing new to the the reheated and rehashed allegations in the New York Times. Everyone knows journalists break the law to get stories. If newspaper investigations kept to the letter of the law more scandal would go uncovered.
The problem for Labour is how little they cared when they were in power. Why only in opposition has Alan Johnson finally decided to make some noise? He had far more power when he was Home Secretary. Unless there is firm evidence that Coulson ordered the hacks, which Guido suspects there won’t be, it’ll be hearsay from a disgruntled employee, and he will get away with it. Coulson is as guilty as sin of condoning that culture, but he’s already lost his job once over this. Remember that other newspapers – including the Guardian’s sister paper the Observer – also hacked phones. The hysterics are fake and will tire as real parliamentary business gets underway. Guido’s sympathy is with whoever had to transcribe Prescott’s phone calls…

Five men, including two former councillors, were jailed today for their parts in a failed postal votes scam aimed at getting a Conservative Party candidate elected in the 2005 general election.
A judge heard that a newspaper investigation and police inquiry unearthed a plot to try to get Tory candidate Haroon Rashid elected in the marginal Bradford West seat using hundreds of fraudulent postal vote applications.

Labour and the BBC are concerned about this issue and claimed that the public want to know which phones have been tapped. Personally I don’t care if Shagger Prescott has had his phoned tapped.
On Friday the BBC reported the story of one man who stole houses owned by others, using bogus claims for unpaid building work. County courts only required a one page form to be submitted before court proceedings were issued for sale of the property. No evidence was necessary and the perp had changed the service address on Land Registry, so the owner never received court papers.
Now THAT story should take up half of BBC news and Labour should answer the question of how they made the rules so easy for fraudsters. County courts can’t be sued in this matter, only Land Registry.

Last week, former News of the World reporter Sean Hoare testified that his bosses instructed him to hack phones whilst he worked for the paper. He has not been interviewed by the police.
A fourth reporter, Sharon Marshall, confirmed to the New York Times that she witnessed phone hacking whilst working for the News of the World. As far as we, she know not been interviewed.
Last week, News International confirmed that a sixth reporter has been suspended for alleged phone hacking.

I find it difficult to understand how all these people are admitting to having their Voicemail “hacked”. This is not any very sophisticated hack (from all the reports), they are only able to access the Voicemail because of the stupidity of the owner of the phone. I would suggest that anyone who has their Voicemail hacked is not suitable for being in any position with any responsibility.

I find it amusing that Alan Johnson is now complaining of interceptoins as his government is responsible for passing The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 which allows many thousands of people to interecept email and phone calls for the most trivial of reasons.
I suppose this blog may even be vulnerable to shut-down under the Digital Economy Bill pushed through in the wash up this year.
