“I don’t think there is anything particularly unique about the Ministry of Defence”.

And this is why we have this unique talent holding the purse strings ! Brave Gids

The MoD wastes billions, two shit aircraft carriers for starters, anyone remember the billions pissed away on the AEW Nimrod? Those c u n t s couldn’t buy a hooker in a whore house with £50 in their pockets.

Why do we need a £60 million pound aircraft to drop a bomb on a mud hut in Afghanistan?

Because people would complain if we started picking on the zulus again.

What other institution prepares itself for the ultimate sacrifice? How else will the public purse provide physical protection from those intent on breaking and killing? My dear boy isn’t fit to comment on the Cadet Forces nevermind the MoD.

    Scary Biscuits says:

The unique thing about the armed forces is that they put their lives on the line for us. No other public service, no matter how worthy, does this.

It disgusted me when Labour said that they had to compete against other deps for funds including the million non jobs Labour created in the Civil Service. Now we have a so called Tory saying the same thing. It’s as though the election never happened.

Qwerty, the Americans regularly used their carriers to bomb Afghanistan in the early stages of the war. Without them we are dependent on countries like Russia and Pakistan for our defence. Anyway if we bought all our hardware for a particular theatre we’d just be inviting the enemy to attack us elsewhere and by the time we built it back it would probably be too late. That’s why historically we have always maintained a mixed force capable of fighting anywhere in the world not just landlocked countries.

Is it just me or does anyone else think David Miliband is envious of David Cameron? Is it because Cameron has more balls and spùnk to tell it like it is!

No more white elephants please says:

Osborne’s got it right. The MOD have been living in cloud-cuckoo land for far too long, with a list of grand and unnecessary kit as long as your arm, cosying up to the arms industry without holding them to account for overspend and delay, whilst going into the red on the defence budget to a ludicrous extent that would embarrass even Alastair Darling.

There’s no technical reason why Trident renewal can’t be delayed for another 5 years at least – this will save money and ease stress on the MOD budget, and certainly downscaled when it is re-examined. Excluding it from the Strategic Defence Review was always bonkers and cowardly. MOD money has to be used on what is needed, not what makes Fox feel imperial. The top brass don’t want it, listen to them

That’s assuming the top brass have actually done their homework. Forthcoming SDSR is a paperwork exercise. Manchester United have a better grasp of what strategic vision is than HMG.

    Oh yes there is.

It is the most inefficient, overpopulated, and incompetent Ministry in the British Government.

    Ghillie says:

George hasn’t thought this through much.

The only thing unique about the Ministry of Defence is it is the only Ministry that does Defence – and Defence of the Realm is the primary responsibility of all governments.

Whether it is over-populated with Servile Servants who make it hugely expensive and inefficient is another matter – in that respect alone it is far from unique.

    Stop talking cock, George.
