In all likelihood the vast majority of the audience that watches the programme on a regular basis likes and carries deep respect for him. I thought that Zac was, understandably, taking advantage of the fact that the interview was live to make clear his sense of grievance. I’d have done the same thing. The questions could always be asked and answered later.

I think Zac is flaky about climate change but in this instance I could understand – as apparently Barnett did not – that the whole cost of jackets do not have to be charged to the election campaign budget if they are to be used in other situations as well (ie with different stickers on the back instead of “I back Zac”, and therefore some of the cost can be allocated under a different budget heading). Creative, yes; unlawful, no.

He got the live interview he said he wanted – and spent over half of it desperately not answering questions, then the second half demonstrating that he has no idea whatsoever about electoral law (posters like that, advertising a single candidate, can *only* go on his expenses. The stickers can *only* go on his expenses, and the jackets can be depreciated across multiple campaigns, but need to have a portion of their cost assigned to each one). His claim that “everyone else is doing it” is (1) completely wrong, and (2) a defense as bad as expense fiddlers used.

It was interesting to hear Snow modify his accusations to get over a false impression. It started early with the statement that they had asked ZG for a written response on the friday a week before. ZG said he made the offer to come on the thursday program at 5.30. Snow never denied this but kept saying ‘we asked you a week ago’. On that thursday programme Snow said that ZG did not respond to their offer. Snow kept on trying to confuse the difference between answering written questions and ZG being able to give a live reply

Personally, I like MPs to have a bit of spine and competence. Going on about the booking process and demanding an apology was, I think, a very badly judged tactic on Goldsmith’s part. Who needs a delicate little flower of an ego demanding the big bad man takes his words back?
Some people have commented on how well Zac did, but I would expect a degree of composure and a few coherent arguments for a well-educated multi-millionaire. Did he manage anything like than that? His approach and style is exactly what I would expect from a Daddy’s boy throwing a tantrum when exposed to public scrutiny for the first time.
A bit of pushing the boundaries on campaign expenses will pass by the public completely. But arguing that “it was all done by the rules” didn’t fare too well during the expenses scandal. Zac had no answer to the question, “Is this David Cameron’s new politics?” He had best improve: I doubt the Tory party image will benefit from Eton boys demanding apologies for imagined slights on TV.
I saw Snow doing a travelogue in Japan a few years ago. He stepped off the plane and clearly had no idea about Japanese culture. I had an office there for seven years and could have given him five minutes to get him somewhere in the game. For example, he had no idea that if you ask a direct question, in Japan, you will never get a straight ‘yes or no’ answer.
For example, he asked a few shop-keepers how business was going. They gave the standard Japanese reply – mama – meaning ‘so, so’ giving no indication one way or the other, as their culture would not permit them to claim either success or failure.
Snow the fool then did a piece to camera summarising what he was hearing, taking ‘so,so’ in the western sense, of not very good. It was laughable hearing him assessing the whole Japanese economy based on his total ignorance of what he was hearing.
His ignorance of invoice allocation in book-keeping meant that he couldn’t understand the points being made by Zac Goldsmith. As in Japan, he was totally out of his depth all over again, but much nastier and ruder than before.
And to think that this is the best that Chanel No 4 can put up!!!
ZAC GOLDSMITH, the green adviser to David Cameron and prospective Tory MP, has admitted that he claims non-domicile tax status, enabling him to avoid huge sums of tax on his estimated £200m fortune.
In a disclosure that risks embarrassing the Conservative party, he confirmed that he is a “non-dom” who can legitimately escape paying tax on his inheritance from his late father, Sir James Goldsmith. Much of it is held offshore.
This weekend Goldsmith, the Tory candidate for Richmond Park, told The Sunday Times that he plans to give up his non-dom status next year. The general election must be held by June.
The Tories have criticised non-doms for avoiding tax. George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, has pledged to impose a £25,000 annual levy on their wealth. Lord Ashcroft, the party’s biggest donor, is under pressure to confirm his tax status to comply with promises made when he took a peerage.

Clearly this individual feels there are rules for him and different rules for the public at large; how appropriate that he has his own seat at the Westminster trough.
I feel he came over as an obfuscator supreme; the true benefit of his expensive education to which an earlier poster made reference; what he did not come over as was an individual with a clear conscience.
To spend £2.5k on posters with your face and your name on and then to claim that over 90% of that spending was for other elections (local) where you are not a candidate is lets say stretching credibility!!

Is there no way of removing the offensive language which is becoming an increasingly evident feature of what people write in their comments? I’m no prude, but some of the terms used detract from what could well be valid points. I think if this continues, more and more people will become so fed up with the offensive language, and they will stop visiting your website, and then your only audience will be the extremists, the illiterate and the foul mouthed. At that point, your website will have rendered itself meaningless and irrelevant.

Hm. Not often I’d believe a politician, but in this case it looks like Zac is in the right. Apart from Snow being unnecessarily bullying (suggesting he had something to hide) I see that Anthony Barnett’s name crops up. Barnett represents all that’s wrong with gutter journalism, and lives by the motto “never let the facts get in the way of a good story”.
Zac’s a cheat and an arrogant boor just like his father was.
