No Such Thing as an Innocent Bystander

The spin has been that today’s Cameron heckler, Jonathan Bartley, was just an “ordinary dad“. Not quite. He is in fact the left-wing Christian pacifist activist who edits the Ekklesia blog and is a Guardian contributor. Hardly your average random passer-by.

Some of his outbursts show why he might not like Dave so much. He calls Jesus a socialist, which will come as a bit of a surprise to Tim Montgomerie, he rants daily against the Tories on his Twitter page, raging against orthodox religion and the monarchy.  With his track record of ranting online Guido is surprised Labour haven’t made him a candidate yet.

“With his track record of ranting online Guido is surprised Labour haven’t made him a candidate yet.”

Ironically, it later emerged that Mr Bartley – the co-director of the Christian thinktank Ekklesia – had been invited to meet Mr Cameron by a Tory party official who approached him as he waited to take his son to a hospital appointment.

Nor can Mr Bartley be described as hostile to the Tory cause: he was part of John Major’s team during his battle with John Redwood for the Conservative leadership in 1995.

Of course Jesus *could never* have been a Socialist! Socialism means setting oneself (and one’s buddies) up as “the elite” to dictate to others and sponge off their ever-higher taxes. Remember: Matthew started out as a much-hater tax collector *before* becoming an apostle.

It means treating people differently according to their (perceived or actual) social class, lies and secrecy, and all the things that Jesus plainly wasn’t and could never have been.

It is little wonder that I have not been impressed by Ekklesia, ever since I first discovered it some months ago. It’s as un-Christian as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and similarly has its own preferred version of or slant on reality.

          • Budgie says:

Of course Jesus was a socialist. He will be remembered mainly for bringing the whole of Jerusalem out on the streets in protest against Rome’s illegal occupation of Palestine. All that nonsense about being tempted in the desert by the Devil with political power over all nations was inserted by capitalist imperialist lackeys and running dogs, and can be safely ignored.

My point, Pillock, is that people change beliefs and attitudes as they gain life experience – that is part of the human condition and does not make them bad, or hypocrites or inconstant, or any other of your petty little jibes. Once Mr Bartley was a Conservative supporter – now he is not. Simples.
On the evidence so far, Mr Bartley would appear to be one of the 10% of Fathers who stay with the mother of a handicapped child. Furthermore, it is likely that he and his wife made a decision to bring the child to term after medical examination, where termination would almost certainly have been recommended. I have much respect for Mr Bartley. You can sod off and die.

The important question is the issue he raised and it was the “progressives” with their tendency to totalitarianism that have been forcing all disabled children to attend mainstream schools. The Tories are trying to roll back this small aspect of totatlitarianism by keeping special schools open. This guy sounds just like one of these totalitarians wanting to close special schools.

          Angry and Despondent says:

He was a researcher for John Major during his leadership bid against John Redwood. That was a long time ago and political affiliations can change in the intervening years. Guido might also add that he has written for the Independent and New Statesman. The BBC also must know he’s not an ordinary parent. He has appeared on numerous Radio 4 programmes such as “The Moral Maze” and other discussion shows. In his latest article on his website he’s bigging up the LibDems as the party of hope.

He stated that he was in the process of taking his son to a hospital appointment when he was invited to meet Cameron. Walks his disabled son to the hospital, then, does he? It was a politically motivated ambush pure and simple.

          • so very, very desperate says:

by ‘ambush’ you of course mean he was invited to speak to cameron by one of cameron’s staff and he has no links to labour but he did to the conservatives

          • Mdme Defarge says:

It does seem a tad unlikely he was just hanging around, but at the end of the day what exactly was the problem?

He wants to keep his child in a mainstream school and Cameron said that’s fine if that’s what he wants but he also wants special schools alongside mainstream for those who prefer them.

Many disabled children have been forced to go to mainstream schools and have been less than happy; bullied and mocked so what’s so wrong in allowing them to be educated in a special environment.

I am just not sure what this man was really getting uptight about. Unless of course he just wanted to have a go and knew the cameras would be on him.

Mr Bartley may well have worked with previous Conservative Government but he seems to have developed his own ideology over the years which seems a bit leftfield but he’s entitled to his views. Game over.

And Cameron answered all his questions in the positive as Cameron’s own experience of schools and hospitals with a disabled child means on this point at least, he knows what he is fucking talking about and this “heckler” showed himself to be a prize tool!

“we must allow disabled children to be educated in mainstream schools” Where they will NOT receive the most suitable care, WILL be bullied by other kids (as that is what kids do) and will hold back other more abled children. HOW FUCKING SELFISH CAN YOU GET???

He is saying fuck what is best for the other kids at the school, fuck what is best for your own kid, so long as your own politically correct fuckwittery is imposed on everyone else

          • Woman on a Raft says:

Agree. Mr Bartley seemed to me to not be acting in the child’s best interest in trying to force him in to a mainstream school where he will be isolated. He seemed to me to be unable to face what the Cameron’s did, that their child was simply outside the average spectrum. As the school resisted for two years it can be assumed they did not feel able to give the care required for the child. It is just possible a school knows what they are talking about, they don’t talk rot all the time, just most of it. Eventually the secretary of state made the school comply, presumably for political reasons.

Cameron did duck one issue, though. There are a number of cases where the parents are simply wrong about what is in the child’s best interests and who is going to arbitrate that? He’s right in general though; most parents will make the best choice for their child and the aim must be to abide by their choice except in very few contested cases, such as Mr Bartley’s.

          • Fed Up Dad says:

Too true – we have this in my daugters secondry school where the pace of education moves at the speed of the least able. Not fair on the individual who is perpetually stressed out – not fair on the rest of the class. Teacher is fighting an uphill struggle. But hey, it’s inclusive so that’s okay. They can all go on benefit together when they all fail to achieve the exam results to join the workplace. I live in a South West Lib ward, where the incumbent has been, is and will always be wet and entirely useless but looks so good in photographs and smiles a lot. If you think Lab love power at the expense of the Nation – wait till you see the Liberals up close. You really haven’t seen anything loonier yet.

            Anyway,

O/T, regarding Guido’s wet dreams about a Clegg Cameron Coalition…

It is NEVER going to happen and this is the reason why:

“The issue is the Liberal Democrat party’s rules. Formally Cameron and Brown have a free hand in negotiations, Clegg does not. The Southport Resolution in the Lib Dem rules requires him to get the support of 75% of the Parliamentary Liberal Democrat party, and 75% of the party’s Federal executive (and failing that the support of two-thirds of the wider party) in order to enter into any agreement that “could affect the party’s independence of political action” – taken as meaning a coalition agreement. While all the leaders would in practice need to take their parties with them, only Clegg would have such a formal process to deal with somehow.”

            From UKPOLLINGREPORT.CO.UK

Can you really see 75% of the Liberal executive doing a deal with the tories? Many of those are somewhere far left of Brown and Balls.

Nella does look forlorn and I am sure feels your pain as well. Dogs are so sensitive to their humans needs. I hope the two of you can find comfort with each other. I am so happy about the award from Kent Wildlife!

Unfortunately for Bartley it backfired on him as Cameron looked willing to discuss the issue and gave a very reasonable answer and it served to remind the public of Cameron’s own tragedy. Why was Bartley on the floor or is he just very short. Frankly, he came across as a tosser.

Jonathan Bartley has recently accused the Tories of being homophobic, anti-disabled children (on the cause he talked about today), anti-asylum seeker and has attacked their policies on immigration and many other subjects. Whilst he did work for John Major at one time, he now says that ‘he wasn’t really a Tory’ and just ‘fell into the job by accident’. He is now very much anti-Tory, which anyone who reads his blog would know very clearly.

More interestingly, perhaps, when the first campaign heckler appeared and shouted at Gordon Brown, Jonathan Bartley was very quick to research him and smear him on his blog the next day, saying that he was a serial ranter and shouldn’t be taken seriously … why hello Mr Pot, allow me to introduce you to ….

There is an interesting issue here – at my children’s school in the village here in Tuscany there’s an edict that requires some seriously disturbed youngsters be in the class – result: total disruption for those who want to get on and work. Not all disabled children are benign and physically unable. Many are actually impossible to educate, which has a knock-on, debilitating effect for all those around them.

    • 156
      Al says:

Most disabled children are far better off and far happier in specialist schools where specially trained and highly motivated teachers can work with them in small classes.

Tuscan Tony @7.55: it’s the same in England: all the old special schools (many of which provided excellent, caring, education) have been closed down as a result of the ‘inclusivity agenda’. So now, seriously disturbed children are ‘managed’ in mainstream schools – hence the proliferation of classroom assistants, special needs advisors and various ‘support staff’ – not to mention rising levels of violence against teachers. The needs of the majority are sacrificed for the sake of the few. Once you close down special schools, it’s impossible to get them back. This guy Bartley obviously had his own very particular agenda and was not interested at all in what Cameron had to say

No regard for his son as Camaron was trying to talk quietly. Bartley raised his voice and steamrolled his ‘manefesto says this, manefesto says that’. He wasn’t engaging in a discussion between two fathers of a disabled child. He had an agenda without any doubt.

Another labour own goal to set up a heckler against dave saying the tories would harm the education of disabled children!! Cameron knows better than most the agonising work and choices that face carers of disabled children and I have absolutely no doubt that tory policies on paediatric care and disability will be a priority for him. Moronic labour stunt!!

As for labour’s record on paediatric care and disability I can speak from experience!!! We’ve been fighting for health and education support for our disabled child for 10 years. She has been left physically disabled because of NHS incompetence under this labour government. She was then subsequently refused a place at any state school because of her disability!!

I sought help from the Department of Health , the Department of Education (both labour) and from an MP who just happened to be Tory.

All I’ve ever had from this labour government is a letter from Phil Hope the labour MP for Corby and East Northants spouting rubbish about their policy document entitled ‘Every Child Matters’. Except our child didn’t!! He didn’t even care that the policy was failing her year in year out. And he never lifted a finger to help!!!

Guess who helped us most?? Yep! The tory MP. Not because he gained anything from it because he didn’t. He’s in a tory safe seat and at that point in time he was mid term. He put himself out to help us all the same.

The local NHS has just failed young nell again and we are having to take her into the private sector using our pension fund again to try and stop her condition deteriorating. So much for the care of children with disabilities under this labour government!!!

And let’s not forget labour not only failed to help us provide basic care for our disabled child they were actually responsible (the NHS on their watch) for her original disability through a failed NHS Paediatric service. Without their incompetence she would have been normal!!

I really believe that cameron will give serious thought to how to help disabled children because of his own experiences!!!

As for confused. When it comes to labour and the care of disabled children I am NOT confused . I have spent ten years fighting for fairness, from this labour government, for our disabled child and have never got it to this day!!

Fairness for all??!! Don’t you believe it – labour doesn’t mean a word of it !! They’ve just spent ten years proving their indifference to us and young nell!!!

We continue to use our dwindling pension to support young nell. This labour government and our local, overburdened, indifferent , top heavy with administrators, NHS continues to fail her!!

And we aren’t alone!! A friend of young nell’s is also disabled . She was seriously disabled by a faulty birth at the same hospital. Her parents struggle to get care for her , fighting to see a consultant to deal with her epilepsy and other complicating conditions. Mostly they see locum registrars who know nothing about her and have to keep asking the parents to explain the condition. A different registrar each time!!! They have failed, despite their complaints and efforts to get access to a consultant!!!

Young nell has another friend, whose sister was seriously disabled and contracted meningitis . She too was taken to the same hospital and her mother stated that she thought meninigitis was the problem. They ignored the mother until is was too late. The child died.

I could go on. I won’t. But all of these children (and more) have suffered and died under this labour government!!!

      nell says:

      No it isn’t!!

Anyone who has been gifted with the care of a disabled child instinctively understands that they have been given an understanding of a deeper dimension of life.

Disabled children have tremendous courage and have to work much harder to achieve the same level of physical attainment that ‘normal’ children achieve easily.

And yet our children, play badminton, go bowling, sail, swim, attend brownies, and guides ( and no doubt cubs and scouts), and on and on … even though it costs them 10/100 times more effort and lots more in pain.

Looking after a disabled child teaches us a great deal about the greatness of the human spirit and its ability to achieve.

And that’s where the Tories are better for those of us who care for such children. Because they respect the individual and believe in the right of the individual and the need to match care to each child.

Labour have never done that for us!!

The shithole that Is England isnt his fault
He lost his little boy, I doubt that he needs any lessons from some Labour knob when it comes to the problems that come with disabled children and how they should be treated, he also doesnt go around weeping in public about his family life unlike the Caledonian squatter who laughingly pretends to be our prime minister

I’m beginning to wonder whether Labour are privately conceding defeat, and not even expecting to be part of a coalition government, now. Hacked Off says:

I tried to post this on to a comments board even before Mr Fawkes exposed Mr Bartley. They didn’t post it, so here goes:

Mr Bartley it should be pointed out is no average punter. He is a member of Ekklesia, a very liberal Christian think tank and supporter of amnesties for asylum seekers. He joined his local church in Streatham because it was the local C of E church and had a very nice associated primary school. He writes about his experiences in a past issue of the Telegraph. Although a Christian school, his primary school did not let his son attend there. I don’t know why Mr Bartlett complains about lack of inclusion. When since have good church schools been inclusive? Their admission policies intend to exclude ne’er do wells and problem families. Someone asked me how Christian David Cameron was. I told them, “Enough to get his children in the school of his choice.” Of course, if Mr Bartley had attended a bog standard comprehensive – and from his refined accent I find that unlikely – then he would have realised that mixing all types of children together was a disaster, whereas putting them with their peers is the best way. Unless that is, of course, he is “ashamed” of his child’s disability.

With zilch help via the Tory idiots during their reign, despite the fact that it was their NHS mis-management that caused her disability by starving the poor baby of oxygen at birth due to employing bloody idiots on the cheap.

New Labour compounded this by making my 68 year old mother the manager of the funds she receives, and she now employs and financially manages , by definition any assistance she gets in caring for her daughter.
