Telegraph is reporting that Lord Paul has repaid the £38,000 in expenses he claimed for a flat he never slept in. He says it is not an admission of guilt. So why is he repaying it?

          • Go on then, Mr Kabila – explain the thriving Kenyan market gardening and flower businesses – all run on free market principles and actually cheaper in terms of energy use than growing the same products under glass in Europe.

It’s not just your minerals and oil we’ll trade for – make anything at a sensible price and we’ll trade.

Sack your glorious leaders with their palaces and fleets of Mercedes, get small producers working smartly, and come and join the party – or you could just sit there and moan while subsidised food aid wrecks your economies and feeds the greed of your rulers.

          • Seeds of hope from Africa says:

Only a few years ago, every African “intellectual” was endlessly singing that “only debt cancellation will bring prosperity” (because this was allegedly the main tool that the “imperialists” were using to deliberately keep Africa poor!). We wrote on this very web site that debt cancellation would not change African economies in any way – that only capitalism will – and ever since our debts were cancelled, no one is talking about them any more; they are now onto new even more useless ideas that have been tried countless times by many socialist nations to no avail.

Africa can only develop by trying real, radical capitalism (which forces every person – rich or poor – to take responsibility for their own lives, and takes government away from meddling in the productive economy so that people can indeed make their own money easily). I’m not talking about the IMF-type of “capitalism”, which is too weak; I’m talking about a brand of real, ideologically-driven (radical) capitalism that would even scare the IMF (and World Bank) socialists!”

Well, they recently banned minarets in a referendum, so they must be doing something right.

O/T, but I’ve been thinking hard about yesterday’s ruling against the party that dare not speak its name.

Basically, the ruling implies that it is illegal to have a political party with core aims that disagree with the equality legislation, since such core aims would make it unpalatable for minorities to become members of such a party.

The idea that a law should contain within itself a prohibition against opposition to it seems, to me, to be either paradoxical or intentionally totalitarian. Old Holborn’s revelation of the sentencing guidelines given to magistrates on the anti-freedom smoking legislation gives a further insight into the mentality of those who pass such illiberal and unBritish measures. No law should prevent opposition to itself – in a democratic society, such legislation should be unacceptable as a matter of principle.

I was worried that we were slipping into totalitarianism under the New Labour experiment – now I am worried no longer, as I realise that we are already there, and without a concerted effort to reverse at least the last 13 years (and probably more) of anti-citizen legislation, we are all enemies of the state.

If the state wishes to make an enemy of me, all well and good – I have nothing to lose, nothing to fear.

An elected 2nd Chamber (with the caveat that if you have served in one house, you cannot serve in another), a written constitution endorsed by a referendum (available in Urdu, for course), the abolition of the whip and fixed term Parliaments would do me just fine.

Unpaid? Are you joking? No official pay but the troughing more than makes up for it. Not one of them is elected. And, in a country purporting democracy, that is disgusting.

Only a fool would suggest that the “Lords” are disinterested. Scandal after scandal has proven that they are troughing agenda hounds. A study of history will reveal how this awful state of affairs came into being.

You must be a peer to write such idiotic trash.

          • Engineer says:

You miss my point. The House of Lords is currently a disgrace, but before it was “reformed” by the current government, it discharged its constitutional function very effectively, despite being all wrong in theory. Long experience and maturity brought steadiness and wisdom in general – no doubt there were odd scandals, but nowhere near as often, or as serious, as the during the last few years.

Reform has not served the country well. It may have served the Labour party well, but that is not good governance for the nation as a whole.

          Allan@Aberdeen says:

The HoL should be a revisionary chamber which would review and moderate legisation coming from the HoC. The incumbents of the HoL should be people who have experieced life in ways that the politicards of the HoC have not and so would have ex-military, businessmen, professional engineers and scientists – in short, people who know a bit and could apply a bit of knowledge to things beyond the range of the likes of Sarah Teather, Harriet’s Hormones et al. Moreover, if such people are to be elected, they should be elected with MPs but only one-third at any election thus giving them a maximum 15-year service and a degree of freedom of action and thought.
If the HoL is elected and enters into dispute with the HoC, then both can claim democratic mandate. That’s a bit of a quagmire. But to abolish the HoL entirely means that there is no check nor balance to the treasonous ideologues who have now taken over the Establishment’s political and legal machines – see the ruling against the PNB as mentioned above.

Best Club in London for deadbeat appointees says:

The ‘toffs’….quaint terminology. Lets look at the facts.

Members of the House of Lords are called peers.

About 687 people have the right to sit in the House of Lords but the they do not all derive their right to sit from the same place.

Members of the Lords fall into the following categories –

Life peers (The great majority) appointed by the government inc. for example Baroness Scotland, B. Uddin, Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead and other Labour ‘toffs’,

Remaining 92 hereditary peers, law lords (collectively the Lords Temporal) and bishops (the Lords Spiritual).

None of it would be missed, but WHY JUST NOW. Labour have had 13 years.

It will be reformed, but properly, by another government.

‘Toffs’ is a nonsense ,but troughers, as in ‘Labour do it best troughers’ have infested the place in recent years.

Reform is well overdue,as is reform of the Commons and the royal prerogative power of the prime minister sitting esconced at the top of the pile of Westminster corruption which has served this nation so badly in the course of the last decade and a half.

Peers accused of milking tens of thousands in expenses will escape criminal charges after a change in the rules left prosecutors at war with Parliament.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said Labour’s Baroness Uddin will not face prosecution thanks to a last-minute change in the guidelines on second homes.

He declared that it was ‘absurd’ for the Lords authorities to claim the move had not scuppered the case against her.

The 50-year-old peer had been accused of wrongly designating a flat in Kent as her main home – even though neighbours said she was never there – so she could claim overnight allowances payable to peers living outside London.

“Indeed, I can also reveal that Darling’s disingenuous management of Treasury affairs over recent months has even drawn criticism from his own officials. They are alarmed that the Chancellor, contrary to reports that he has tried to stand up to Gordon Brown and be more honest with the public, has consistently refused to take the prudent and sensible advice of Treasury mandarins.
Understandably, these senior civil servants do not want to take the blame if the Chancellor’s debased Budget backfires and, quite unprecedentedly, are discussing taking the extraordinary step of asking the Chancellor to issue so-called ‘letters of instruction’ to his officials ahead of Budget day itself. Such letters would make it explicitly clear that the Budget judgments have been made by Alistair Darling personally – and against the advice of Treasury officials.

Gordon Brown hurled a torrent of abuse at EU Foreign Minister Baroness Ashton in a row over the way she is doing her job, it was disclosed last night.
The Prime Minister swore repeatedly at the Baroness over the telephone, leaving her shaken, according to well-placed sources.
Details of Mr Brown’s latest bullying outburst prompted claims that Baroness Ashton, 53, is losing the confidence of her own Government, as well as Brussels. According to one source, he accused her of ‘letting Britain down’.

The tone of the criticism may be mysoginistic – but the substance is that she is useless, and would still be useless even if in posession of a pair of Eds.

How someone can go from CND to hospital mamageress to suddenly being the EU’s equivalent of a foreign secretary without ever holding a diplomatic or foreign office position is beyond me – she is clearly out of her depth and unfit to hold the post. Were she a man, the situation would be no different.

The reasons for her appointment are many and varied, but prime among them was the wish by the Eurocracy to have someone inexperienced who could be controlled – she has not proved as malleable as they thought and is thus fair game for attack.

    Martin Day says:

But surely Gordon Brown’s moral high compass would ensure that he would not be following in the footsteps of the chancellor in this sleight-of-hand money grabbing stuff. Gordon has told us all of his hatred of all those tax loopholes and tax avoidance schemes, hasn’t he?

When chancellor himself, he had a grace and favour apartment in Downing Street. He also had a bolt hole flat nearby, bought from the estate of the late Robert Maxwell. Shortly before he became PM, Gordon designated his bolt hole flat as his second home. This allowed him to claim allowances for it, which included paying his brother six thousand pounds for cleaning services. He also spread the cost of a nine thousand pound kitchen from Ikea, over 2 financial years. This allowed him to stay just within the maximum second home allowance limit.

But Gordon became PM as we all know and just like a very shrewd business man looking to keep things all for himself and not to give anything to the taxman, HE PUT HIS FLAT IN HIS WIFE’S NAME! As you do if you are a capitalist. This means of course that if he sells the flat, no capital gains tax is liable.

Hang on though, I’m not finished yet.

This of course left him free to now nominate his home in Scotland as his second home. This has allowed him to extensively renovate it at the taxpayer’s expenses. The taxpayer also forks out for the cost of the cleaner and the gardener.

All this AND he lives virtually cost-free in Downing Street for the past 12 years. So why has he charged anything to the taxpayer? Just because you can, doesn’t mean you have to does it? What about his moral compass? He also earns £194250 as PM and an MP. In addition, he has a 6 figure index linked pension to look forward to. The tax payer even pays for a sky sports subscription.

Can you get them to open up?

    1. William Hague has now confirmed that he has known about Lord Ashcroft’s tax status for a “few months”. When exactly did he discover your party’s deputy chairman was a non-dom?

    2. Why did Mr Hague not immediately publicly clarify Lord Ashcroft’s status which both he and the peer had previously pledged would be that of a permanent UK resident?

    3. Did he immediately tell David Cameron about Lord Ashcroft’s true status? If not, why not?

    4. Why did Mr Hague take more than nine years to establish Lord Ashcroft’s status when he had personally offered written assurances to both Tony Blair and the honours committee that Ashcroft would become a permanent UK resident and pay “tens of millions a year” in tax as a condition for receiving the peerage?

Scottish Labour in ‘cash for access’ row

Scottish Labour’s biggest donor faces allegations of “cash for favours” over his links to Steven Purcell, the disgraced leader of Glasgow city council who resigned last week after he confessed to using cocaine.
Willie Haughey, who has given £1.1m to Labour, is alleged to have benefited financially from a series of decisions involving Purcell… Last year, he attended a private dinner in Glasgow where the guests included the prime minister and Jim Murphy, the Scottish secretary. In February, he donated a two-week holiday at his villa in Florida for a Labour fundraising dinner at the Glasgow Hilton, which Gordon Brown also attended.

A Sunday Times investigation has identified publicsector contracts and awards of millions of pounds of public money for his companies.

Purcell, who resigned earlier this month after admitting his drugs habit, chaired a meeting which agreed to hand Haughey nearly £1m of public funds. At least one council official raised concerns with Purcell about his close links to Haughey.

Ben Wallace, MP for Lancaster and Wyre and the Conservative spokesman for Scotland, said: “Scotland’s biggest Labour donor is in receipt of millions of pounds of Labour-controlled government funds.

“There needs to be an investigation to expose Labour’s links to its donors in Scotland and contracts placed by Labour authorities.”

Wallace said he would write to the Scottish justice minister this week asking for an investigation.

A spokesman for Strathclyde police said the chief constable was aware of allegations, but that no complaint had been made and an official investigation had not been launched.

        Jimmy Heddle says:

Lisbon !!!! So people will inflict another 5 years of Labour with all that that entails for the currency;interest rates and world standing ? Lisbon !!!.

Fact: Labour was in government and railroaded the Lisbon vote through after reneging on their 2005 Manifesto promise to hold a referendum on the weasel words that Lisbon was an “amending treaty” NOT a full blown treaty to bring about complete union; the LibDems also refused to support the Consrvatives and honour THEIR 2005 Manifesto committment but then again when has a LibDem promise been wiorth the paper it’s written on ? The Conservatives up until the final moments when Lisbon became law when all 27 nations voted for it said that they would request the UK instrument of ratification back from Rome and tear it up.After the Lisbon Treaty became law they said that once in government they would seek to re-negotiate powers back from Brussels and then hold a referendum on whatever powers they managed to get repatriated. A referendum on whether to ratify something i.e. the Lisbon Treaty AFTER it was ratified and became law is totally meaningless

It is a fact of life that an Opposition can do nothing whereas a government can so for the reason that Cameron did not pledge to hold referendum on something that had already passed into law you suggest that we should elect Labour propped up by a self-serving LibDem rump ? With the greatest respect you should get your head from up your arse and realise exactly what is at stake at the next election. If Labour is re-elected you can kiss goodbye to ANY re-negotaiation of the Lisbon Treaty or trying to repatriate powers back. And don’t say ok then i”ll vote UKIP….those jokers are a one trick inneffectual party who will NEVER obtain a mandate. Farage is only in with a chance because of Tory-interparty rivalries.

So finally you probably will say the final scenario is that Cameron loses and gets kicked from the leadership and we have someone like David Davies or Daniel Hannan as the party lurches to the right. Again get real No Tory right wing party will EVER get elected again and if you havelearnt anything you should have learned that Europe has kept the party from power for 13 years and would keep them from power for much longer. The British public don’t give a flying fuck about this,It’s not an issue that will ever get a party elected to government in the UK.

When it was just Sarah Brown and Michele Obama doing it, it was fine, but now that Samantha Cameron has joined in, it suddenly becomes a bad thing.

    • 271
      Anonymous says:

Spot on with that although I think its a wrong move as Samantha appeared to have more style and substance having remained out of the limelight to look after her family. The ‘other’ one was just seen as a socialite upping her own social standing rather that actually being a charity fundraiser.

According to one of ms ashton’s close advisers/friends, his foul-mouthed obscene rant about her incompetence left her shaken.

The Court of Public Opinion says:

The scale of troughery – where does your MP fit in?

1 – Troughs for years but never caught.
2 – Not caught but whiffs a bit so repays token amount.
3 – Caught and is forced to repay with no further action.
4 – Caught but repaying causes such embarrassment to liebour they have the option to keep their loot as long as they issue a pretend apology to the House of Corruption.
5 – Caught and taken to court to be let off without charges at a later date, as long as they plead not guilty.
6 – Caught red handed openly thieving but is of an even higher status than 4 so is let off completely, allowed to keep the loot, does not need to pretend to apologise and is given the green light to take as much as they like in the future.

Notice their is no class for “not troughing” and only 47% are at class 1. Troughers who resstrict their fraud to house flipping only are in this category, as the public would have had to pay capital gains tax.

“Lord” Paul is merely a class 2 trougher, like Tally-Ho Cast Iron with his wisteria, whereas Uddin makes a fine class 6 example – the royalty of troughers, so to speak.

OK so Lord Paul has repaid but only because he has been found out. Did he repay the interest on the money and how can the money be accepted without any admission of liability ? If the money is being repaid then where is it being repaid to if Lord Paul is mantaining he does not have to repay it? As any benefit fiddler who has been caught knows the benefits people spend months if not years building cases then taking the accused to Court. Apart from the MP numpties already in Court .

The Inland Revenie and Customs if it is really independent of government should begin an immediate tax investigation into all retiring and stranding MP’s and their families and using the laws of the land levy heavy fines or take them to court. At this rate the £170 billion could well be paid off in months!

They might like to start with Mrs Peter Haines and her recruitment company and the placement of a former soft porn film actress (in a Teddy Tensor Horror Film ‘The Curse of the Crimson Altar” billed on the cast list as a ‘sacrificial victim’ (for hire on LOVEFILM and recently released as a DVD). She was appointed at a £50,000 plus FEE as a consultant to the North Wales Police Force…. To find the name of this hire simply look up0 the film credits and her name is included and she still uses the same name professionally today
