            Ya!

          • barefootcontessa says:

Sad, but sorry, thought he had died ages ago! Brings to mind duffle coats and all that jazz, when politicians said what they thought, did what they believed in, and had principals. Far cry from the situation now!

          • Fear and Loathing of Labour says:

The man was a dangerous lunatic and a communist treasonous hoon. He wrecked Britain and it’s industry by giving the unions everything they demanded, he was a bastard of the highest order and I hope he rots in hell.

            Fuck off Foot!!

          • Throbber says:

I agree – One less treacherous lefty hoon.
            Good riddance.
Wish Brown would drop dead too.

          • A more sympathetic view says:

Pity the red lunatic fuckers can only die once, I could watch it all day.

          • Simon Duffer says:

            He was hideously sanctimonious.

          • Hitler was a socialist says:

Foot also opposed British re-armament throughout the thirties. He was an appeaser. An Appeaser of Hitler stalin Militant. He was on the wrong side of just about every argument he took up. He was a quite appaling public speaker. Quite shambolic really. yet the Labour establishment had already sanctified this man. On a personal level it is always sad when anyone pops their clogs but please can we be spared all the crap we are going to hear from Labour about what a great man he was.!!

          • tory boys never grow up says:

The idiot at 1:18pm – Foot was most definitely not an appeaser – he was one of the 3 who used the name Cato when writing “the Guilty Men” which was one of the foremost pamphlets attacking the appeasers and was an active supoorter of the war against fascism in Spain. At least try and achieve some historical accuracy before you start that most cowardly game of smearing the newly dead.

          • barefootcontessa says:

He was a man of conviction. He was a man of compassion and courage, well educated and an intellectual. There are none of those around these days. Or can you name some? I think not. Perhaps Boris.

          • Martin Day says:

I don’t care if he was a man of beliefs or principle, he was wrong wrong wrong on everything.

I’ve no doubt Fred West believed in everything he did, so did Hitler and Josef Mengele but they was still mad, deluded and dangerous fuckers.

Foot and his looney lefties did a huge amount of damage and incurred enormous cost to Britain, just think how many more trecherous things he would have been capeable of had he become a Prime Minister.

Fuck off Foot and rot in hell.

          • barefootcontessa says:

He was a humanist, not a murderer!

          • Sting's Beard says:

To the blogger at 1.28 Surely it is quite irrelevant if Foot penned a book under a false name” The guilty men” surely this just shows how duplicous he was. His public pronouncements as Michael Foot at the time were to the effect that Socialists throughout Europe should all disarm simultaneously. the political reality was that as by this Stage Germany had fallen under NAZI dictatorship meant this would never happen. Foot knew this to be the case so in effect he was saying Europe should appease Hitler. I dont think any credence can be given to any pamphlet he was not prepared to put his name to. no I am afraid he was a dangerous LUNATIC!!

          • AC1 says:

He had a good innings and I’m sure his family are sad.

Me, I’m glad he watched the fall of the evil Soviet he supported.

He led his party to a disaster when the economy had barely recovered from the early 80′s recession. The man was an utterly incompetent commie and the TV eulogies are ridiculous.

The guy was a complete fucking lunatic – if he’d got into power, the country would have completely imploded, and we’d be about a million times more fucked now than we currently are…

He’s dead? Yeah, well, I’m sure that’s awfully sad for his family – as far as I’m concerned, it’s one down with many more still to go…

I only hope there’s someone who shows him the same level of respect, and dresses like a tramp to go to his funeral.

      Mr Ned says:

He was an honourable man of integrity, and he fully believed in what he stood for. Which cannot be said of ANY of the current labour front bench.

OK, he was wrong on almost every policy and wanted this country to be more like Soviet Russia, but at least he had integrity and passion and it was based on genuine philosophy and a deep love of this country.

      RIP.

Heinrich Himmler believed in what he stood for. Adolf Hitler was kind to animals and small children.

Foot was a contemptible evil little man who didn’t care how many millions died in the pursuit of his demented dream of a Communist utopia.

      Mr Ned says:

oh dear, The BBC and the left are pouring it on thick now…
      “MICHAEL FOOT DIES:

‘The most spellbinding orator in the House of Commons´ – ex-Liberal leader Lord Steel

‘He was admired by politicians from all sides’ Tony Benn

‘We have lost a real political giant today’ – Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones ”

Pass me the sick bucket! Yes the man had a passion and a belief in more than being in power for power’s sake, he had integrity and was highly intellectual, BUT He was also a deranged lunatic and an extremist who (thank God) kept the left out of power for a generation. He was a political pygmy compared to Thatcher and she slaughtered him regularly.

He was no more a political giant than Michael Howard was and was a LOT less successful!

      • 435
        Sting's Beard says:

He was also a quite stupendously boring speaker. He stumbled over his words interrupted himself and often forgot where he was going with his line of argument. No im afraid its a bit like the Emprerors new clothes. the left has been putting it about for a generation that he was a great orator and it will probably prove impossible to shoot that one down!!

It still wasn’t a donkey jacket.

Of all the things he did and didn’t do, he’s remembered for something that isn’t true. Perhaps theres a lesson in this for whoever takes over the labour party while it drifts about for the next few years. No-one will remember anything you actually did, just get them to remember something crap.

Perhaps it WILL be Darling. After all, he’s already half way there. In a pub quiz in 2050. “who led the labour party in opposition from 2010 to 2013?” A: errrr. that bloke with the eyebrows, you know.

        • 115
A useful idiot (for someone) says:

          Quite. Noblesse oblige

          As for Foot……..

During this election Foot criticised the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, for seeking rearmament. In his election address Foot contended that “the armaments race in Europe must be stopped now”. Foot also supported unilateral disarmament, after multilateral disarmament talks at Geneva had broken down in 1933.

Guess what might have happened in 1939 if Foot’s advice had been followed.

In the 1920′s the real benificiary of western disarmament would have been the Soviet Union.

Common thread, the ‘fil rouge’ (rouge, how very apt) of idiocy ran through his political life.

      • 46

I never saw a problem with that coat – when you look at the repellent opportunism of scum like Brown and Harman clambering over the corpses of the dead to bray their lies, wearing a hardwearing jacket instead of some bloody morning suit seems utterly by the by.

I wonder if anyone’s baggsed it? I haven’t got a donkey jacket? I bet they bury the old commie in it.

        • 83
          Blue Rosette says:

          You don’t get it.

It was insulting to the millions of ordinary people who gave their lives.
It is not about whether it was suitable for Agent Boot.

Do you turn up to a wedding, a funeral or other event in such inappropriate clothing as worn by dustmen? No of course not. because it shows a lack of respect.

And yes he did wear a donkey jacket. The Centotaph is there as a mark of respect to the Glorious Dead.

Agent Boot chose to put his politics first and respect second.

          May he rest in peace.

          • My morning coat is tailor made for me says:

I turn up so dressed because:-

            a) I choose to do so
            b) It’s a durable outfit suitable for the wildest of wakes or weddings
            c) It pisses off the posers who turn up to these things in rented clothing

          Anonymus says:

With hindsight, in 1982, we should have been all cheering at the cenotaph, partly for Foot, but more for Harold Wilson, for not getting us involved in the Vietnam war.

          • Viet Nam ..let the buggers learn says:

A dismantled Empire gets sniffy about the new Empires adventures. In the 1960′s no British Government would have got involved in Viet Nam. Viet Nam was not in Britain’s ‘sphere of influence’.

The imperial ghost was still twitching.

There are, however, a large number of comments that have been referred to moderators.

Surely the Beeb aren’t filtering out the comments criticising him?
That would be left-wing bias, which as we all know, doesn’t happen at such a stalwart and august organisation.

RIP a man who tried to save parliament and England from the EU. Many here will bring up his misunderstanding of economics but there was so much more to the man. Just think how labour today would smear him as “anti-European” just because he believed in democracy.

As does Tony Benn, but for all the fucking use they have been being anti EU compared to facilitating the destruction of Britain economically and culturally both Foot and Benn can eat shit and die.

    • 243

Yes he was anti EU but only because he wanted to see Europe placed totally under Soviet domination not out of any love for Britain!!

    • 253
I remember it only too well says:

Labour was virulently against the EU because it was seen at the time (the SIX) as the most successful economic grouping of the time with progessive Labour laws and worker participation in boardrooms…the German model.

They saw this as a threat to their power base in British trade unionism.

Remember that socialists need grievance to prosper. At the time Europe was seen as a ‘capitalist club’which annoyingly made people richer, and a bulwark against the spread of Communism.

The Labour speeches of the time make this clear how Europe was bad for the working class. No mention of democracy at all.

Times have changed, but that is how it was at the time.

          Nye says:

Britain was a total shithole for ordinary people in the 1930s. They were little more than serfs.

Many people in the establishment were prepared to undermine their own kind to better the lot of the ordinary man and woman.

They weren’t doing it for their own personal benefit.

If they’d done nothing they’d still have plenty and oiks like you would never have come to be.

I suppose the best way of putting it is that the choices they faced then were very different to the choices we face today, but you would have much less choice today had they not done what they did.

Michael Foot was never a communist, but many others were and some of them worked for the Soviet Union in the 1930s and through to the 1950s, as a way of undermining the British establishment.

It’s no different to the way so many work today for the US neocon agenda.

People like Michael Foot chose human well being. His opponents then and today choose personal profit.

1224 From BBC political correspondent Mike Sergeant: An awkward opening to the session for Harriet Harman. She would have loved to have been asking the questions today – particularly as William Hague played such a key role in securing a peerage for Lord Ashcroft. But her slip calling him the “foreign secretary” gave Hague an open goal and put her on the back foot for a while. Thereafter, the Commons leader struggled to pin him down. Leading off on Afghanistan and the economy gave Hague the opportunity to play it cool and work in the pre-scripted lines. But Harman and Labour certainly won’t let the Ashcroft affair go.

    WTF!
The Commons Leader is supposed to answer the questions and pin Hague down with a correct reply!!! Feck off BBS Journos!!

Chamberlain held the whole show together just long enough so that when the decisive moment came Britain had enough Air Defence squadrons in place to defend itself. If we had followed Foots advise Britain would initially have fallen prey to NAZI Germany and then subsequently to the Soviet Union. It is entirely right that this is pointed out. Unfortunately it is so littele known due to Labour prpaganda in our schools.

          • Nye says:

The country was crawling with Tory appeasers. Foot’s Guilty Men and the Red Book tell you all you need to know. Even the Queen Mum was rather fond of Herr Hitler.

There’s no dispute about any of this. The aristocracy too were involved.

The criticisms that are being levelled at Foot are fuck all compared to what the Tory appeasers were up to. Most of the commentators here aren’t too bright, but that’s the reality.

The Tories only escaped further criticism after the war because Labour agreed not to say too much about it in order to keep the country reasonably united and protect the Tories from the wrath of the public had there been more exposure of the facts.

The only irony is that most of the scum on here who are being critical of Foot are precisely the sort of shit that would have been supporting Hitler at the time.

          • Sting's Beard says:

Nye you really are a retard. Labour appeasement was all swept under the carpet when Churchill allowed labour to join the Government when he took over. He was too magnanimous to make much of it.

With regard to your comment that many posters on this site would have supported Hitler please try and get a sense of perspective. Firstly appeasement is not equilivant to support. Secondly you simply dont seem to understand conservatism do you. It matters not a jot to a conservative what form his counties enemies take. When he comes to an appreciation of the danger he will oppose them. Unlike idealogues who have to weigh up all situations against their idealogical map to see where it all fits in.

Yes there were a lot of stupid establishment types who did not distinguish themselves with their comments in the thirties. And I am 100 per cent certain that if Hitler had invaded the UK 99.999% of them would have seen commonsense and stood by this country. That can certainly not be said of the Labour establisment who would sell us down the river. Need I mention imposing membership of the EU against our will.

No you will really have to try much harder. But I fear you are too much of an idealist to be able to understand anything!!

          • Sting's Beard says:

            PS

Foot did not put his name the booklet The guilty men. If he was not prepared to stand up for his views I cant be bothered to place any faith in them. As Michael Foot he advocated dis-armament in the face of growing NAZI power. Foot was well known for running with the Fox and chasing with the hounds. I think you will find a certain Winston Churchill wrote numerous articles under his own name supporting re-armament and attacking appeasement. Now that is a consistent conviction politican in operation. No Foot was a complete Fruitcake.

          • genghiz the kahn says:

did you bother to read the entry?

“The book’s arguments and conclusions have been questioned by historians. Some have queried its identification of appeasement with the Conservative Party, noting the Labour Party’s disarmament policy under George Lansbury.

The idea of appeasement as error and cowardice was challenged in 1960 by historian A. J. P. Taylor’s highly controversial The Origins of the Second World War, in which he argued that, in the circumstances, it might be seen as a rational policy.”

          • Nye says:

Foot didn’t put his name to the Guilty Men book because it would have breached his contract of employment.

It laughable the way you try to excuse Tory support for Hitler. It’s all well documented. Labour never supported Hitler.

I understand that it’s all an embarrassment for you, but lying about what went on fools no one.

You’ve always been the nasty party, and very obviously still are!!

Conservatism is Burke, but people like you and your friends are little short of house-trained fascists.

          • Nye says:

            Oh right.

So now that the Tories have been found guilty of appeasement it’s no longer a bad thing.

            Hilarious!

It’s a wonder you spent so long pretending you weren’t appeasers, and accusing everyone else of it.

The funny thing is, things like the Bullingdon Club were founded on fascist principles.

Prof Cesarani wrote that rape was “almost a hallmark of his conduct”.

At the age of 96 the very last Labour Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has died.
Mr Brown, who was widely considered a total disaster as a Prime minister at the start of the century, is largely remembered today only for Brown Day.
This was the big celebration on the 1st January 2049 when the debt that this man had run up for UK taxpayers was finally reduced to 2007 levels.
He also had the West stand at Raith Rovers named after him, but this was destroyed for firewood when the country ran out of power in 2012.
The hospitality room at BBC Salford was known as the ‘brown room’ before its sell off in 2014 to Virgin-Sky media corp.

His ex wife, Sarah, now married to Ellen DeGeneres, tweeted at her sadness at the loss.

    Rampant apathy says:

    O/T
Interesting article by Danny the Fink in today’s times saying essentially that the overwhelming majority of people don’t give a flying fuck about politics.

    Quote:
The cynicism about politics is so pervasive that it embraces almost all political activity. Use a statistic? It’s a lie. Cry on television about your dead child? It’s an election gimmick. Attack your opponents’ policy? You would say that, wouldn’t you. And this cynicism extends to the media and our coverage. So not only politics, but news about politics, is seen as a fiction inside an untruth wrapped in a piece of spin.

The reason why the MPs’ expenses story made such a splash was not because it surprised people. It was because it didn’t. The public had always known, always, that MPs were in it for themselves. This was just the “Gotcha” moment.

Just as bad is that politics is seen as irrelevant. Voters are angry that there aren’t any bollards that prevent the fishmonger’s delivery van from ruining their lawn. Or that their next door neighbour cooks smelly food. Or that they can’t get their child into the school that they want. Or that the nursing staff on ward 7E are rude. Meanwhile politicians and journalists are going on about Lord Ashcroft.

    End quote

    Interesting reading the comments.

There is a huge gulf in the way that politics is conducted today from the way things were done in Michael Foot’s day. Faster communications – the ‘soundbite’ – has changed things, but the worst change has been in attitudes. The political battles of Foot’s day, which were often about huge questions of life and death (appeasement, WW2, the cold war, the nuclear arms race) were conducted in a far more gentlemanly way. Today’s battles seem trivial by contrast, but conducted in an atmosphere of bullying, smear, lies and PR gloss. We’ve lost much.

I disagreed with much of Foot’s politics, but I respected the basic decency and honourable way in which he conducted himself.

By the way – I’ve spent many hours wearing donkey jackets in the past, and the famous garment that Foot wore to the Ceremony of Remembrance was not a donkey jacket.

This is EXACTLY how I felt when I watched the daily politics !

End of PMQ – neil then says they have just received some news – obviously very important – Foot is dead.

The rest of the programme was dedicated to the ex KGB agent !

        fat tits tone says:

exactly – all day to release the news and then straight away when PMQ’s was on – I bet next week GB willl be at the funeral and the week after at the memorial service blah blah blah……

anyway – i no linger care less if gb is at pmq – i nearly laughed myself silly at hagues answer to harperson – her, her stupid husband and unite and her pathetic attempt to mention LORD ashcroft at every available opportunity – and the beautiful lbgt question – what a crock – was that the best question they could come up with when this country is on its knees – honest to god i don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

To 523,yes I watched Harpics performance vs Hague the woman is a disgrace to politics, today she came over as a harridan fishwife with her hysterical outbursts.
Bercow pulled her up on lapsing into Ashcroft speak but even he could not control her rantings and watching that Bradshaw guy pulling faces as though he was gurning for England was a revelation.
Hague I thought was excellent in his choice of words in that laconic style of his and you could see that she was severely rattled.
Why the hell we have such honourable members as this harpie in important positions is beyond my ken.

      Barnabas Scudamore says:

Kinnoch is great isn’t boyo ?

Spends most of his time in parliment, taking the piss and attacking the “upper classes” and Royality…….THEN he’s on TV dressed in his gowns in the house of Lords !

      Communism does not work.

The MAIN problem with communism (I say the main because there are many) is that of Human Nature.

How can it be communism, to be sat in the houses of parliament drinking bottle, after bottle, after bottle of expensive champagne ?

How can it be communism and looking after the “ordinary person” when you’re claiming £72,000 for gardening costs (horse faced Beckett)?

I could go on and on and on……………………

I would like to see a more neutral ground taken. I mean, whatever happened to central ground?

Communism will lead to a Nazi state – they are one of the same.

The sooner Cyclops is slain by Her Majesty’s Men – the better !

The only wish I have today now is that the EU gravy train you are watching, you piece of right wing trash, rolls right over your palsied cock and leaves you pissing like cabbage water through a colander. You make me feel physically sick and I am just disappointed that this being a virtual world I am unable to vomit right across your nasty little hate deformed face. But virtually that’s what I’m doing now. Feel the warmth on your skin, smell the stink. That’s the aroma of your soul.
