Non-Dom Donations Hypocrisy

Labour and the Tories are duking it out over non-dom donations.  So time for some evidence based blogging:

Since 2001 Ashcroft has given £5,160,915 to the Tories and Labour’s troika of of non-dom donors, Mittal, Cohen and Paul have given £6,734,250. Mittal bought a bit of corporate lobbying for his £4 million. Tony Blair lobbied for Mittal’s business interests when he was still Prime Minister…

Trade Unions don’t pay any tax. Should they be allowed to donate?

          • jgm2 says:

Set the Charity Commission on them. The unions are just looking to enshrine privilege and better pay and conditions for their members. It’s like private school for adults. Remove their tax-free status.

Oh, the Charity Commissioner is off on a politically motivated investigation of a bullying charity you say? Huh. I was sure we’d find her buzzing around on a politically motivated investigation of some private school.

            Just goes to show you.

          • anonymouse says:

Of course they should be allowed to donate, after all they do receive funds from the government under the Union Modernisation Fund.

Trade unions are a convenient cover to clean money. Strip all donor details from money the unions get, then pass on the money to the party as “union” donations. A brilliant scam.

Over the last few weeks I have received telephone calls from all three of the main parties each of which when asked if I support them have received the following reply

          1) I worked from the age of 14 until I was 68
          2) In that time I have managed to raise a family and buy a house and provide for a reasonable old age pension
          3) I am not and never have been on any benefits
          4) I am an Englishman and am therefore ignored by your party who have sold my country to Europe
          5) My reward for my efforts is that in a few years time if my wife or I require care you will steal my house and or savings regardless of the fact that I have contributed for half a century to the welfare state.
          6) However if I were an asylum seeker or illegal immigrant you would look after me on the grounds of human rights. The fact that I am English means that my human rights don’t count.
          7) Most of you have quite knowingly abused the expenses system to great personal advantage and avoided prosecution.
          8) You are all in my opinion totally devoid of ethics and a disgrace to democracy

Therefore in answer to your question, “FUCK OFF YOU TWATS”

Biased they most certainly are. Michael Gove did a good job of pointing this out to KW, although in her case it won’t make a shred of difference. Thankfully the BBC is about to start shrinking, but a couple of radio stations and a chunk of their hugely over-blown website will be but a drop in the ocean. The only way to show these wasters of public money is to significantly reduce the licence fee, thus forcing them to reduce their massive bureacracy and ridiculous salaries. Their current suggestions for slimming down are just window dressing. If we want results then hit them where it hurts – in the billions they rake in every year.

You would think they’d have swung to the Liberals by now. But no. They still want to hang on the coat-tails of a party capable of forming a government. A situation only possible because they (and the BBC) lack the belief that they could engineer a swing to the Liberals.

How could Labour be only 7 points behind after totally destroying the UK economy? It is only the BBC that can achieve this. The BBC trumps all other meeja outlets combined. Relentless 24/7 positive, uncritical reportage of the Maximum Imbecile and his idiot edicts combined with gleeful hatchet jobs on any Tory policy.

The Conservative Party are a bunch of shits

The Conservative Party blamed “computer problems” for delays in reporting £635,000 in donations to the Electoral Commission in the last quarter of 2009.

The delay emerged in the latest quarterly report from the Commission, which showed a huge increase in political donations in the last quarter of 2009 as the parties began to gear up for the expected May 6 general election.

The Tories had raised £10m, compared with Labour’s £5m and £1m from the Liberal Democrats.

Detailed and timely reporting of donations and loans to the Commission are key to ensuring the parties keep to rules designed to curb corruption.

Chief executive Peter Wardle said his Commission was “extremely disappointed ” with the very high number, and value, of late reported donations, “especially from the Conservative Party”,

      LORD IN TAX ROW
Michael Ashcroft is changing the name of his flagship bank after long-running rows with the government of his adopted homeland of Belize.

He revealed the Belize Bank will trade under the name British Caribbean Bank in the region after a magistrate last month ordered nearly £4million in disputed taxes be paid back.

In an interview with the Belize City TV channel he owns, Lord Ashcroft said he wanted to diversify away from Belize despite his long association with the Central American tax haven.

Last year Martin Day revealed the bank, which Ashcroft bought in the 1980s, was caught up in another row over missing aid money.

Belize’s government alleged a £5million donation intended for slum housing was diverted into the bank’s accounts to settle the previous administration’s debt. Ashcroft’s aides paid the sum back following a court ruling.

A friend works in an inner city NHS practice. Many of the staff in the practice (including some of the GPs apparently) intend to/have objected to their medical records being uploaded to the NHS ‘spine’.

Not only because of errors. Practically ANYONE (other than cleaners maybe) in the NHS can already access ANY medical record – all they need is a vacant, logged in computer terminal (the NHS apparently doesn’t prohibit login/password sharing) a surname & date of birth. All hits come up with addresses etc. Select your target and you have their full medical history inc internal practice notes.

The NHS says that it already logs ‘suspicious’ activity – namely attempting to access non practice patients more frequently than every (4?) minutes – but I bet no such audits are carried out WRT details accessed in hospitals.

Your NHS GP is supposed to ask you if you are prepared to allow your records to be uploaded to the Spine – but no-one I’ve asked has been contacted by their GP.

If the NHS can be so cavalier with security now, wait until somebody lifts a proportion of the spine database. Then citizens may REALLY know what it means to live in a surveillance society…

Remind me, when did any of the Labour donors promise to be permanent residents and pay tens of millions of pounds in UK tax , back when permanent resident didn’t mean “non-dom”?

The issue is that Ashcroft broke his word, and made Hague look shady and corrupt. You are supposed to be all about openess, but it’s clear you are just a partisan hack.

    • 253
      Engineer says:

“Resident” and “domiciled” have different meanings for tax purposes. There are three categories, all acceptable so long as it is clear to HMRC which one applies.

Resident and domiciled = live in UK, pay UK taxes on all income, wherever earned.

Resident and non-domiciled = pay UK tax on UK income, overseas tax on overseas income.

Non-resident and non-domiciled = pay all taxes overseas.

It’s legal (currently) for UK political parties to accept donations from people in any of those categories. It’s also legal for people to sit in the Legislature whichever of those categories they come under, though the Tories have said that they’ll change that to resident and domiciled only, giving MPs and Lords three months to decide if they wish to relinquish their Legislative powers or their tax status.

There are a number of non-domiciled donors to political parties, of whom Ashcroft is only one. Others include eight Labour donors, and a couple of Lib-Dem possibles. The party to have benefitted most substantially from donations by non-doms appears to be Labour.

      • 273
        Civil Servant says:

No, the meaning changed in 2008. In 2000 “permanent resident” meant UK resident domiciled for tax purposes, not non-dom. That’s why Hague talked about “tens of millions of pounds” in UK income tax, and why he was incredibly cagey about Ashcroft’s status, saying he “was fufilling” rather than “fulfilled” his promise.

It’s not the fact he’s a non-dom, though I’m not entirely happy about non-doms donating to political party, it’s the fact he broke his promise to get a peerage, and that the Tory party have covered it up for ten years.

    • 254
      Engineer says:

PS – Ashcroft did not break his word.

He undertook to pay UK tax on UK income, and unless anybody can prove otherwise, we can assume that he has, since HMRC have not acted to prosecute for unpaid tax.

        Ashcroft totally lied.

The laws he are citing did not exist when he took office. They didn’t exist for 7 years as a Lord. The laws he are citing came into existence in 2008.

The reason Ashcroft didn’t reveal his status until now, and the party hid it for so long is the simple fact that he was doing it dishonestly for 7 years.

He was not allowed to be a lord, and a none dom until 2008. So his party lied about it

Lord Ashcroft personally funds tory blogs and activism. It’s part of his mandate in tory HQ.

Ian Dale was forced to publish a disclaimer, saying he was in fact “business partners” with Ashcroft yonks ago. By “partner” he means, he is funded by tory HQ basically.

Guido is just the same. He just hasn’t been outed yet like Dale.

All of the undying support on blogs, and message boards for Ashcroft is just activists and bloggers defending their boss.

This information was sent out from tory HQ, to it’s bloggers yesterday, to coincide with the revelation. In an attempt to “dampen” the news.

Aren’t you just, inadvertently admitting that you are run from tory HQ, just like your Ian Dales etc etc.

Lord Ashcroft personally funds tory online activism. Ian Dale was forced to print a disclaimer on his web site stating that Lord Ashcroft was a “business partner” of his. Translated, he funds the web site.

    Dear me………

  78. 282
    Guy says:

1: Your figures are outright lies. Ashcroft admitted himself that he had given at “least 10 million” to the party since 1997.

What’s more he has given, fact, 4.6 million, to the Cameron campaign alone. You are questioning people’s intelligence if you are seriously trying to claim that he only gave 1 million to the Howard, Major and Hague campaigns combined!

Many newspapers quote his donations since 2001, of being closer to 15 million

2: Lord Paul has only given £50k since 2001. And that was for internal labour business – as in a leadership issue. Not funding elections.

3: Mittal is neither a Lord, a party deputy chairman, so can frankly give what he wants. If you are trying to list tory none doms, who aren’t lords or party members, you are probably talking 5x as much!?

  79. 286
    Guy says:

The key point is the simple fact that the laws Ashcroft is citing to clear his name (long distance resident) only came into existence in 2008.

He took office in 2001, stating he would pay full time UK tax. Hague stated clearly that he would.

From 2001-2008, he was still a none domicile, with no laws to back him up. He and his wretched party simply lied, and misled during this period.

In 2008, a law came about that he could claim he was following, and he finally came out because of freedom of info pressure.

The key fact being, he lied to take office as a lord for 7 years. As did his party. And is the very reason why they never made it public until recently.

  80. 287
    Guy says:

    PS.

The Guardian today revealed the information, and data, the tory press office had handed out for it’s bloggers to publish, to coincide with the announcement/revelation. In an attempt to dampen the bombshell.

Either Guido is simply copying it, or he was given this information direct from tory press office, as he has published every bit, directly in time with all of the other tory blogs.

Only an idiot would think Guido isn’t a tory blogger anyway. Working from the tory press office, but thanks for finally confirming it.

The cherry on top is the obvious point that Lord Ashcroft actually funds all official tory blogging, and activism. If you were wondering why message boards and blogs have been flooded with undying love, and support for the tax dodger in chief!

  81. 289
    Guy says:

Tory Shadow cabinet member Michael Gove on Ashcroft in the late 1990s (he of course did not know the man was going to be his boss a decade later!) when a political journalist for The Times:

“Mr Hague certainly has a well-developed sense of humour…You certainly do not emerge strengthened as an opponent of cronyism by expending what credibility you have acting as the paid lobbyist for your own title-hungry Treasurer”.

“Enjoys no check on his arrogance…Why wasn’t the Conservative Party capable of seeing how much trouble reliance on this one man would cause?”

    Haha! Classic

  82. 291
    Hugh says:

    Guido

You do realise that in lobbying so hardly for Ashcroft (a cronie who bought a peerage, and then lied about it) you are just really showing that your claims about being a “libertarian” are as phony as your psuedonym.

You’re a tory blogger, who’s been handed these figures by the tory press office like Ian Dale, and all of your colleagues.

Lord Ashcroft funds tory blogging. Go figure your going to defend his cronyism to the death.

If you were a Libertarian, you’d be laying into the guy, for his lies, deceipt, and bought titles.

Instead, you are just towing the party line, and trying to turn it on Labour, like the tory press office requested, from all of it’s bloggers (see Guardian article).

I realise you not being a tory blogger is a running joke. As in everyone knows you are, but it’s an in joke to just keep denying it.

But can I suggest that a non partial, libertarian, would be laying into this sort of sleaze? Rather than just posting the information the tory press office asked you to post on the subject?

    As in PR

  83. 292
    Hugh says:

Tory press office sent a set of figures, and angles, to all of it’s bloggers, on the release of the Ashcroft admission, to dampen the subsequent media attacks.

On the basis that Ashcroft funds all tory blogs of note. As well as all tory activtism

Like the agenda less, impartial libertarian Guido is, he just publishes it all, just like any Ian Dale, or Conservative home.

I have no problem with tory blogging. I’m just sick of all the undue respect this tory cretin gets for just being a pawn of Ashcroft, like any normal tory blogger.

The guys towed the tory office media line completely on this. Right down to the figures they prepared for it last week, as part of the PR battle.

“Fighter for truth and honesty in politics!” Unless it involves my boss.

  84. 294
    Hugh says:

    From the Guardian

“Tory press offices sent out a whole host of stats and figures to their bloggers, to try and push a “hyporisyy” angle, in defence of their party deputy chairman”.

Deary me Guido. Mr. “I am not a tory blogger I am here to expose sleaze” Fawkes!
