There has to be something seriously wrong when the best leader a party can muster is Gordon Brown. Sadly, they have no obvious candidate who could do a better job. The next Labour PM probably hasn’t entered the Commons yet.

Carry On Don't Lose Your Head (1967) says:

Brown’s scorched earth policy extended beyond the economy. He’s wiped out any talent the PLP could muster.

          • thick as thieves says:

correct. not only has brown hobbled every labour politician of his generation but he has also fucked every labour politician of the next generation too.
            brown is CIA.
if he is a team player why is he still receiving calls directly to his mobile phone and not through the downing street switchboard?
so he can receive his instructions from his CIA handler unobserved, ofcourse.

          • Gordon's favourite Butt Plug says:

Brown is CIA. Yes, indeed. So very well hidden from us all. Only your unique genius could have ever discovered that one. More pills required? Lithium levels low?

This will come as no surprise, but it is nevertheless an appalling indictment of this loathesome and pathetic government:

          http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6991086.ece#comment-have-your-say

          • Steve Expat says:

Quite shocking, and this is looking like the front page lead tomorrow:

GORDON BROWN’S government is “weak” and “dysfunctional” with a “strategic gap” at its heart, Britain’s top civil servants have warned, in a devastating critique of the state of Whitehall.

A report, based on the testimonies of 60 senior civil servants, has found that Downing Street and the Treasury “have few tools beyond the brute force of political edict”.

The analysis by the respected Institute for Government, which is funded by Lord Sainsbury, Labour’s largest donor, concludes that despite Downing Street’s grip on power, there is a “conspicuous lack of a single coherent strategy for government”.

When the f… can we vote out this bunch of incompetents?

          • Gordon's favourite Butt Plug says:

Chilling, shocking, but even the Mandarins are fed up. Despite being cosseted in beneficial remuneration packages, and golden pensions. There is obviously a huge element of job satisfaction missing. Can’t be much fun in Government with Brown throwing his weight around, either directly or via his favoured thugs.

          • thick as thieves says:

            shocking? not really.
the new labour war party could not have carried out its war crimes without the collaboration of the civil service and now the heat is on they are trying to disassociate themselves from the party that to this day facilitates torture.
it is the logical thing for them to do.

          • Gordon's favourite Butt Plug says:

There are a growing number of people wondering whether Brown’s desperate attempts to cling onto power are not just a facet of his deranged mind, but also a concerted effort to keep all his nasty little secrets hidden. There are some new revelations in the papers to-day, but this drip drip drip of information will grow as the demise of this corrupt and venal government becomes more obvious. A Government that won’t hesitate to intimidate or even murder. The truth will out, and that is why they are all scurrying. There have to be very many more scandalous discoveries. Get ready, it won’t be pretty.

        • 67
          Gooey Blob says:

Targetting is one word you could use. Victimising is a better one.

Labour don’t speak for anyone these days, not the working class, and certainly not the middle class. When Labour came to power the country’s pensions were in a very good shape. Now they’re in tatters. Taxes have risen dramatically, and for what? They spent money they didn’t have during a boom, and didn’t even spend it well.

Labour is a once-great party which had noble ambitions at one time. To see it reduced to the current lot of Brown, Miliband, Harm-men and Mandelson is depressing.

The Middle Class has a message for Brown and Labour says:

“I believe in an aspirational Britain….” Is this bloke for real ?

He has done more over the past 13 years than any other in the Labour government to stultify aspiration;squeeze the middle class; ensure that their children are dis-advantaged at every stage from nursery school to university to getting a foot on the jobs ladder even when they graduate with thousands of pounds debt(courtesy of him);he’s done more to ensure that they can’t inherit their parents wealth and that their parents have to sell their homes to pay for nursing care;he’s stolen their pensions;ruined their investmetns;made “saving” a dirty word. He’s rubbished the middle class views on marriage;their concerns on law and order and branded them as racist because they are concerned about immigration and belittled their patriotism until it suited him to wrap himself and his party in the flag to stave off unrest on two unpopular wars and in the meantime he was encouraging the work shy and feckless within our society to live off benefits paid for by the middle classes taxes.

But most of all he has bankrupted this country and put our children and grandchildren into debt for the next 30 years.

So as a fully paid up member of the middle class Gordon here’s my answer to your speech – FUCK OFF !!!!

        Engineer says:

That was indeed the tone of the Radio 4 Six O’Clock News. The Dear Leader is now the guru of Aspiration, where all the middle classes will have Bigger Houses, Foreign Holidays, motherhood and apple pie. Some token ridicule from (and of) the Tories (who will Cut Public Services), and then some more upbeat reporting of Labour, the Party of Aspiration.

I’m in two minds whether they genuinely believed what they were saying, or whether they knew they were taking the piss but didn’t care.

I couldn’t agree with you more. We all pay through the nose in taxation for less and less each year. We live in a village which has no street lights. Our police station is miles away, and yet, we pay a substantial amount of council tax for the priviledge of having our dustbins emptied once a fortnight.

We’ve both been made redundant three times each, had both our pensions pulled out from under us, seen our state pensionable age increase on a whim, and what little money we’ve saved is not worth a carrot in interest. We’ve both had about as much as we can take – which is why we’re leaving the UK asap.

        Moley says:

        Labour has lost it.

People who work are middle class- all of them. They are no longer natural Labour voters.

The natural labour voter doesn’t work and is on benefits.

The working people of this country have been abandoned by both main parties.

People who work want effort to be rewarded and want to keep their own money. They want choice and to be in control of their own lives, they can see the danger in Europe, it’s lack of democracy, its corruption, and its contempt for the individual.

They can see that State Health is failing, State Education is failing and that our green and pleasant land has been invaded by people who they did not invite.
The dinosaurs will die. All the main parties were complicit in the corruption, degradation and destruction of Parliament. All of them.

The renewal of politics requires the birth of new parties with new policies, new principles and with aims which are clearly understood and which resonate with the electorate.

What aim does the Conservative Party have? To get elected at all costs.
Same as Blair. What do they stand for? No idea.

He imposed a £100 billion pensions stealth tax.

He hit first time buyers with a £1,500 rise in stamp duty.

    He imposed 111 tax rises.

“Middle Britain won’t forget that it was Gordon Brown who destroyed their pensions, increased their taxes and crippled social mobility”, he added, as he cited a number of examples of how Middle Britain has suffered under Labour:

Fewer people getting on to the housing ladder.

    Fewer first time buyers.

    Declining social mobility.

Children from wealthy backgrounds are four times more likely to go to university.

Parents unable to work because childcare costs are too high.

    Lack of school choice.

    High levels of anti-social behaviour.

    High levels of violent crime.

    Sharp decline in pensions.

    Record youth unemployment.

    Harder to start a business.

        No you’re wrong!!!

There’s much good and lots of evil in Haiti just like anywhere else – just like the HoC.

Question of whether we, as individuals should donate money to Haiti’s tragedy is another issue.

Omaha has given $100million – gordon has given nearly £7million of our money , don’t know what France has given but it’s more than us and the UN has matched both.

Problem is , Haiti has a reputation for taking and magicking large amounts of aid money into private off-shore accounts of individuals , many of whom are now, no doubt, dead.

My cynical view is that there is plenty of international government aid going in at the moment and we need to see if that reaches its goal without being diverted to some south american off-shore account. If it does and there seems to be control and order then those of us who would contribute can safely do so.

At the moment I remain unconvinced.

At the same time we have to look at the USA’s history in respect of Haiti. This is a golden opportunity to turn Haiti into a state of the USA. Mind – the haitians by and large might welcome that!!!!

O/T I see that N-Dubz who appeared on This Week with Andrew Neil last week have been sacked as Ed Balls champions of bullying because the midget one threatened to kill a young woman.I can’t believe the dross who appear on this supposedly serious political show. What is even more surprising is that Lady Abbott was lapping it up and was most animated(I shouldn’t be surprised though, should I).Here we have two monosyllabic Londoners speaking as if they came from the ghetto (ja no wot I meen like).,even though they were brought up in relative affluence Lady Abbott of Cambridge (who let’s face it doesn’t speak like any black person except the ones who have had elocution lessons) was most lively whilst they were speaking dare ting. I bet her own dearly beloved son does not speak like these two eejits. Speech is so important. Instead of the government spending money on laptops they should spend money on teaching youngsters how to speak properly. I used to teach Cypriot and Jamaican teenagers in Haringey in the early 70s. Most were not born in the UK,their accents were very easy to understand and they all had a vocabulary a thousand times greater than these two (and they were in the remedial class)..
I find Lady Abbott very juvenile.Every time the Tories are mentioned she raises her eyes to the ceiling just like a teenager. In fact anybody who disagrees with her gets the same treatment.I just loved it when the wonderful Constance Briscoe was on the show. Now,there’s a lady with class. Lady A is sooooo partisan and just emotes for all da sistaz. Huge support and bigging-up for Lady Ashton,Mrs Bercow, the Baroness Lady ladida Scotland, but for Constance dagger-eyes. I understand that Constance was turned down for a peerage (obviously not leftwing enough) and also failed to become a QC. At least she went to a proper university. Lady Abbott just sits there week after week spouting the same rubbish. Portillo has a much more analytical take on things. Some weeks ago when asked her moment of the week she said it was a Gay Pride event, even though at the time several serious events had taken place in parliament..As for her lurve-in with Obama. It really p……s me off that she has taken ownership of him.I mean where were his black family when he was growing up?Who fed him? Rotten old whitey did, that’s who. She and YAB must wake up each morning saying ‘I am a person of colour and a minority,so I must talk about persons of colour and minorities only’. Makes me laugh when they both had such a privileged upbringing and education compared to most people in the UK.

WhiteHall has written the Government’s end of term report.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6991086.ece

“One mandarin said the Treasury was failing to control public spending because it was trying to interfere in everything else: “The only thing it did not do was try to control public expenditure and try to get value for money from it, or set any sensible objectives.”

“In unpublished research gathered by the institute, the director-general in one Whitehall department said: “What comes out of No 10 is lots of barmy ideas. It’s the worst possible kind of policy making, which is ‘here is a problem, let’s have a kneejerk reaction to it tomorrow on what we’re going to announce’ and quite frankly the less contact with No 10 the better.”

A former government figure said that at one stage the Treasury felt it could rein in Downing Street only by sending memos totting up the amount of spending commitments that No 10 had made each week. Another director-general told the institute: “All the worst bits of policy making come from the centre. It’s these people who think you change the world by publishing a strategy. And you don’t change a thing by publishing a strategy, it makes no difference whatsoever.”

    Well worth reading in full.

“In contrast the fragmentation and lack of coordination at the centre of the civil service – the Treasury, Number 10 and the Cabinet Office – leads to an administrative centre that is relatively weak.”

It found “a conspicuous lack of a single coherent strategy for government as a whole”.
