Ed Balls’ Privileged Education, in Eton not at Eton
Little bit of confusion yesterday when Guido misheard that Ed Balls went to Eton for an education, it wasn’t a scoop, The Times had it a year ago and it was Draperishly innacurate – as Balls tweets this morning. Eric Pickles consequently made the same muddle on Today this morning (Eric is an avid Guido reader and this blog is one of his favourites). So Guido will take this opportunity to clarify the facts on behalf of Ed Balls for chums and co-conspirators:
Ed’s father taught at Eton. Nowadays Ed modestly boasts he went to a state comprehensive in Eton, which in truth he did briefly for one term. His alma mater however is the exclusive private fee-paying (£10,000+ a year) Nottingham High School, founded in 1513. The school’s motto ‘Lauda Finem’ means ‘praise to the end’, which perhaps explains Ed’s view of himself. From there he went to Oxford’s Keble College, just like his father before him. At Oxford he, like many other public schoolboys, joined the Oxford University Conservative Association. He also joined a notorious exclusively all-male drinking club known as the “Steamers”.

The BBC ran a warming feature on the evening news earlier this week in which it was claimed that the Antarctic ice cap is melting, ‘therefore’ the seas are going to rise by two (three? six?) metres. I am no physicist but if an icecube melts in a glass of water, one thing that the glass does not do is overflow. I think the Beeb are more full of shit than the North Sea, which is presumably also due to overflow.
There would be no change if the Artic ice cap melted as this is surface ice on water. In the Antartic much of the ice is on land so if it did melt there would be a rise in sea levels. The same would apply with surface ice in Greenland, etc
That said, I still think AGW is a load of balls.
Ice Cube, I would pay more attention to your diatribe if you knew (a) how to spell “arctic” and (b) the first thing about the accumulation of ice in the Antarctic. As it is, the MMGW fiasco is becoming a confusion of hyperbole and vested interest, not helped by the input of ignorami such as yourself.

Andy you are correct if the ice is in the water but the Antarctic is not like the arctic insofar as the Antartic is a continent of rock iced over better known as permafrost (though yes ice is in the water as well know as ‘sea ice’ a lot of which is seasonal). Hence it is said the permafrost on land will melt and flow down into the sea and so they say raise the water level. Pravda are capitalising on this as opposed to other theories and ideas. I still agree with you that its all bullshit and probably just as likely to say the loss of all that weight at the bottom of the planet will turn the world upside down and we will all then fall off.
Given the fact that the sea coverage of the earth is approx. 70% (before even the depths are taken into account) the cubic volume of water is enormous already and I reckon it will take more than an icecap melting to significantly affect that volume and raise the levels even cm’s rather than meters. Only in my opinion of course.

That’s just it – you’ve got to hand it to the LEft – had the same pic come to surface of a senior Tory then the BBC/Guardian/Labour Party would all have swung into ruthlesss action over it, every Labour MP would bring it up everytime they get on TV, Denis McShame would be claiming that it means the Tory party has never changed and can’t work with “our European partners” and the BBC would just love it. I am a climate change sceptic,but I have to relate an experience;
My wife and I went on honeymoon in 1989 to Grindelwald,Switzerland.
One day we visited a glacier at the head of a valley – you could simply walk along a path and then into the depths of the glacier through ice tunnels – you know how the Swiss can do anything with tunnels.
Well,we took our kids to Grindelwald in 1999 , ten years later and took them to the glacier so that they could walk inside etc.
My face must have been a picture when we got there to find no sign of the glacier – it had vanished to reveal a smooth rock face with some stairs that you could climb (again the Swiss are clever) – the damn glacier had retreated so much in 10 years it was incredible.
So the water had melted – why so quickly I don’t know.
Dirt from pollution. The clever Swiss never worked out how to vacuum the glacier and remove all the Diesel soot. There is no feature of nature that can destroy this floating black sun absorbing dirt. The Glacier has to melt to get rid off it.

Glacier don’t melt, they ablate.

the Tories were always the ones who left public school amongst all sorts of high jynx, looked down on everbody and then went into politics. They were not too fussed about poverty or welfare rather tried to maximise profits, especially their own.
the Labour party was always into wefare and equality and members would often go without to enhance the general good. They looked down on private education and fought for redistribution.
These days you could be forgiven for thinking it was exactly the other way round. Although it makes it a lot easier to hate the fucking lot of them.

There’s no doubt that Labour has set up massive postal-voting scams because its own ‘supporters’ never get off their arses to vote. Either that or they’re the sort of people who need ‘guidance’ from community elders.
However, the closer we get to the election, the clearer the signals from the markets that anything but a cutting-Conservative government will instantly result in a loss of triple A ratings and a serious economic crisis.
I can’t see the Liberals propping up Gordon in a hung parliament because even they know what will happen if Gordon got back into No10 and carried on spending.
Labour’s answer to all our problems is to spend more than we have.

My bones tell me the same thing. This will be the nastiest election campaign in UK history. It will be characterised by lies and smears from Labour, there will be massive amounts of postal votes in marginal constituencies.
But we’ll only get to that point if the polls close to within hung parliament territory. Otherwise it’ll be financial crisis II, THE BIG ONE. Elections suspended to allow the government to ‘do the right thing’. A ‘National Government’ populated by a cabinet of all the same Labour MPs as before and Cameron given a job as Minister for Recycling.
