That these guys expect to benefit from PR is irrelevent to whether, in itself, it is a good & democratic measure, which it is. You could at least equally well point out that the politicians who support this corrupt system are uniformly the ones that support it.

For example at the Euro elections Labour & Conservatives, the only parties who appear to benefit from this corruption & what may be the wildest of coincidences, the only ones who support it got fewer than half the votes.

Apart from high explosives the way to make Britain a democracy is to have an electoral system whereby the parties elected represent us in a way closely representative of the way we chose to vote for them. Anybthing else is not only undemocratic it entrenches in party appartchiks in a power monoploy. Ease of market entry is better than monopoly in economics & even moreso in politics.

And of course these MPs are absolutely right that doing so & the Tories refusing us the choice is probably the only thing that could get Labour back in this election & would be likely to get them back at the next.

Have you ever thought of recruiting a correspondent who actually knows anything about the Labour Party and its people.

I only ask because of all the people I personally know on that list, they've all been committed to PR since they started in politics & they were all members of LCER.

Twigg and Pakes for example were both NUS presidents elected by PR who have vocally supported PR since their teens.

I know this is a partisan website but this is like revealing Ken Clarke as a pro European.

Look Guido, it's all very well to joke but this is a serious issue. We have an overwhelmingly corrupted House of Commons. And that's because 400 out of 646 MPs are in safe seats. They get elected once and as long as they do two tours of parliament and a dinner once a year - and don't break any serious laws - they will get reselected. So there's a culture of disregard for the voters.

So they didn't give a toss about the voters when they filled in their expenses forms and they didn't give a toss about the voters when they made the expenses rules. Because safe seats are the enemy of the people.

So yes I want electoral reform Guido. Because I do want to be elected and I do want to achieve something. And every election, I want to have the chance to lose my seat if I wasn't good enough in the previous four years. And for 400 MPs that isn't the case. Which is why there are so many lazy, mad decrepit, stupid and downright bad MPs.

Guido, you should be lauding us. We're trying to inject a free market into politics where people get to choose their representatives rather than party leaderships; where crap MPs and lose their seats so standards can be driven up; and where the voters everywhere matter, not just the 150,000 swing voters in marginal seats.

So you have a pretty graph, well done. Now get your head out of your arse and do something useful for once and use your blog to back electoral reform. Otherwise all your waffle about how bad MPs are is just onanistic guff.

Yours,

The Electoral Reform Society's review of the 2005 election was interesting - it showed that under STV (the best system, and the one the Lib Dems would put in) the Tories would have the same number of seats, the fringe parties would get a dozen, and Labour would lose over a hundred to the Lib Dems.

Which means that if there's a hung parliament, you could see a short-lived Lib/Con "electoral reform" government.
