Oborne Overstates Israeli Influence
Guido occasionally enjoys a drink with Peter Oborne and he is one of very few journalists willing to take a stand that is not popular. Like him Guido suspects that the threat from Jihadis-Under-the-Bed is a bit overstated. It is a maverick view, though that doesn’t make him wrong.
Peter will, it seems from reports, be arguing tonight in a Dispatches programme that the influence of the Israeli lobby is too great in Britain and that the Conservative Friends of Israel group (CFI) is “beyond doubt the most well-connected and probably the best funded of all Westminster lobbying groups”. This time Guido sees some flaws in that analysis.
CFI don’t seem to be doing a very good job because the Tories, unlike U.S. Republicans, did not back Israel’s efforts to drive out Hamas terrorism from her border regions. When Israel acted to defend itself from terrorist rocket attacks, Hague endorsed an Arab-backed UN Security Council call for a ceasefire and called for “war crimes” allegations against Israel to be investigated. The shadow foreign-secretary is not exactly a patsy for Israel.
The truth is that a Conservative Friends of Palestine group was launched in 1991 at the Conservative Party conference in Blackpool. It bombed. The meeting was addressed by the PLO’s London representative, Faisal Oweida. The PLO were anti-imperialist allies of the IRA who only attended Tory Conference venues to bomb them. Hardly likely to encourage friendship…

I think that a the most accurate test regarding strength of the British-Israeli lobby has to be the results it achieves. And looking at this, you would have to assume that it largely fails in its role. Britain remain pro-Palestinian, and tend to side with Hamas- a certified terrorist organisation- when they are clashing with Israel. All this is in the wake of this countries ‘war on terror,’ and the fighting of international terrorism.
Poor programme, it felt like a five minute spot stretched to fit the hour format. Oborne exagerated the influence of pro-Israeli lobby groups, used thin evidence and lumped a whole series of very different Zionist lobby groups together. I thought the most bizarre section was when he used the Conservative Friends of Israel of anti-semitism for inviting Kaminski.

I have never met Peter Oborne but I read his book on the political classes and was impressed. Not only has he done the UK a service by writing and publishing it, he showed considerable moral courage. Unlike the self proclaimed exemplar of moral probity currently skulking in No 10.

Look, don’t we have the right to know where public figures are coming from? Muslim politicians, et cetera, are always introduced as such, and anyway we know where they’re coming from as they don’t go in for Anglicising their names. Not so Jewish politicians/public figures – with some honourable exceptions. There is no doubt that Jewish people are extremely over-represented in the media and in other walks of life where power resides – it’s not that that I mind but I do resent the fact that debate on the matter is closed down.
If anything, Oborne understated the influence of the pro Israel lobby in British politics & news media, but then he had to, lest he be accused of anti semitism.
The fact that the journalistic impartiality of Jeremy Bowen was called into question for writing an article that was published in the JEWISH CHRONICLE and subsequently investigated by the BBC under mounting pressure ( ie. threats ) from the pro Israel lobby and that Jonathan Dimbleby is currently under investigation for daring to criticise the actions taken by the BBC against Bowen rather makes a mockery of your belief that Oborne’s views are “overstated”.
The only thing overstated is the myth that critics of Israel & its lobbyists are anti semites, self hating jews & any of the other dialogue blocking slurs adopted by apologists for Israel’s actions.
Neo liberalism & the conservative right will support the Israel lobbyists no matter what, because they are, to a man & woman, obsequious & corrupt. The corruption is so engrained in politics that the blatant money for influence bartering that masquerades as democracy is invisible.

I found the programme left more questions than it attempted to answer, and could leave Peter open to cries of being the leader of the denouncers of the “Jewish Conspiracy” which has much greater historical European influences

Well let’s get some things straight:
Most countries of any size have lobbies in powerful countries – Irish Americans and Irish English are no different in this respect from Jewish Americans and Jewish Britons who support the Jewish state. Jews have statistically been more successful than your average population population group and hence can bring quite a bit of influence to bear. But the Muslim-Arab lobby is also extremely powerful and has for instance persuaded the EU to shower largesse on the corrupt kleptocracy that is PLO Palestine.
Personally I prefer to see these things in a principled way. Israel is a civilised essentially peaceable democracy, a UN Member state, and as long as it remains those things it deserves our support. However it cannot claim the West Bank or the whole of Jerusalem as its own.
The likes of Melanie Phillips do their cause no good by coming out with baloney to justify annexation. I think we’ve only tolerated it to a certain extent because the Palestinians have been such an unpleasant bunch (and continue to be so). When not hijacking aeroplanes or justifying genocide, they whinge, teach terrorism to their children and lie about nearly everything.
The UN has a lot to answer for because it has kept the “refugee” industry going for so long. Half of Israelis are refugees but they’re not in receipt of UN handouts.

When are people going to stop looking for scapegoats to cover up the problems that are inherent in themselves? The kind of comments that are printed on this site and in many other places on the internet are reminiscent of the anti-semitism which led to World War 2 and the Holocaust. Its actually disgusting to think that the people i live amongst here in the UK are so primitive, insular and uninformed with regard their concept of identities. These people are playing into the hands of the islamic fundamentalists and in effect funding their ongoing efforts to send our modern world back into the dark ages.

Anyhoo, it’s quite important that a very right wing Israeli lobby does not dominate British politics at the expense of more thoughful views from that country and indeed those more thoughful views amongst British Jewry.
To that end I’d recommend that these pro right Israeli lobbyists call themselves something more accurate like Friends of Right Wing Israelis, rather than Friends of Israel.
There is much concern for example that their activities and methods may not be in the long term interests of Israel, and even of Zionism.

I think you have missed the point entirely – of course there are jewish terrorists, palestinian terrorists, christians, muslims etc etc no-one is pretending that there isnt. The point which i will try to make clearer for you is that there are a lot of people in this ‘great’ country of ours who still choose to believe that jews (or muslims or christians or any other sect for that matter) are responsible for everything that is wrong and bad with the world. No-one is saying that Jews are better or worse than anyone else…but time and time again Jewish people specifically are slated with the same age-old (absurd) anti-semitic slurs which only exacerbates the divides between communties. I think Peter Obornes programme was awful, CFI is a very honourable organisation and has every right to act as a lobby group for Israel in Parliament.
