Labour Party Baroness Whitaker has fiddled £150,000 in expenses by renting a country cottage from Conservative Lord Renton and saying it was her main home. For seven years Baroness Whitaker rented the property, which is on a driveway leading to Lord Renton’s mansion in the Sussex Downs, at the same time as owning a million pound London property.

Seriously, it’s simplistic to bellow that all miscreant MPs should be shot through the face – however attractive the fantasy is. If we the people really want revenge then we should at the very least (and at the very first first) enact _serious_ penalties for misuse of government assets or monies – think of the USA where every government envelope carries a warning that private misuse of it will attract a federal penalty of $300 (or possibly $500?). Once there is a proper framework of penalties then we can start retrospectively pursuing the worst self-enrichers who remain in the UK, and sentencing in absentia any who have fled.
After a few convictions and a good number of cases in the judicial pipeline the focus should change to local government, where there are many examples of self enrichment and corruption. Pursue them too, and outlaw what are effectively full time counsellors (living off “expenses”).
Finally allow HMRC to investigate MPs and local government officials’ “expenses”. I knew a little of the bizarre tax treatment of MPs expenses in the 80s (based on what I would have expected to go on individuals’ tax returns), but also knew that the Parliamentarians’ own Inland Revenue office (then actually located in Parliament) were happy to condone the practices. I can’t believe that HMRC are still as acquiescent.

I think we can safely say the aim is total tracking and monitoring of the population. The interesting question is: Why? Are they planning something we don’t know about?
