Leave the “nuttin” to the professionals or at least the enthusiastic amateurs.

All you should be worried about is “smokin’ the beef”.

Engineer’s comment of 11.28 is spot on, but I would like to point out a further, little reported issue, and that is that coal combustion produces more radiation than nuclear power stations. Both in the gases emitted by combustion and the coal ash there are significant quantities of radioactive waste.
The lack of a proper representation of trained scientists and engineers in the political class and in the media means that the debate on these issues reverts to dogma, not science.

Then why have they been so damned anti-nuclear for the past decade? This government have tried hard to destroy – and have succeeded in selling off to foreign competitors – most of Britain’s nuclear engineering capability.

They are only ‘going nuclear’ now – a decade later than they should have done – because there is no other sensible, practical alternative except coal.

This government’s energy policy has been a joke for 12 years.

TaT may or may not be right about the inadvisibility of nuclear power. He is correct, however, to point out that Gordon’s mates have lobbied for this and personally have much to gain from it:

Gordon Brown’s friend, advisor and supporter is Treasury Minister MP Ed Balls. Ed Balls is married to MP Yvette Cooper, who, as Minister of Housing was responsible for the new planning laws to speed up major projects, like nuclear power stations.

Yvette Cooper’s Father is Tony Cooper, who, until recently, was chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association, which lobbies Ministers on the benefits of atomic power. He is now director of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and one of the most outspoken champions of the industry’s ‘green’ credentials.”

Gordon Brown’s brother is Andrew Brown, who was director of media strategy of the PR and UK government nuclear lobbying company Weber Shandwick, former UK chief exec Philip Dewhurst, is corporate affairs director for British Nuclear Fuels…Andrew Brown is now Head of Media relations at EDF Energy… pushing for a nuclear rebuild programme in the UK

I would feel surer of the wisdom of nuclear energy if half the troughers didn’t have their snouts in the contracts.
