Mark was head of media for the Liberal Democrats from December 2004 to May 2007. Previously, he was campaigns director of human rights group Liberty from June 2001 until April 2004. In 2004, he was co-founder, and first national coordinator of NO2ID, Britain’s leading pressure group opposing the introduction of national identity cards. He has been chairman of NO2ID since 2006. Writes for the Guardian as well.

Guido needs to concentrate his attention on the hoons & troughers; not be distracted with unimportant details such as re-setting his clocks.

    Down with Brown! says:

“The IEA is the UK’s original free-market think-tank, founded in 1955. The IEA’s goal is to explain free-market ideas to the public, including politicians, students, journalists, businessmen, academics and anyone interested in public policy.”

I guess the surprise is that such a renowned free-market think-tank would take on such a senior Lib dem, who was key figure their party when they pursued anything but a free-market agenda under Charles Kennedy’s leadership

But he’s also head of Liberal Vision which is on the extreme free-market, small government wing of the Liberal Democrats. He looks pretty solid on most things the IEA focus on.

    Brown's a Tosser says:

Littlewood most definately a left of centre guy with some funny socialist/liberal views and says it all he wrote for the Guardian. A real catch I don’t think.

      You are so very wrong.

Please put me right. Maybe I have the wrong Littlewood and will gladly apologise.

        Brown's a Tosser says:

Well, let’s look at some of the recent times he has been in the news and judge from that…
Arguing with the Greens over climate change and whether a deal in Copenhagen is a good thing
Argued at Liberal Democrat Conference that the Lib Dems needed to give up on the north and run a small-government anti-tax agenda to hold on to their South-West seats
Was on 5Live arguing that capitalism is the best system invented and the world needs more of it
Also has always advocated the Lib Dems call for less government spending and lower taxes.
Is currently comms director of a think tank that advocates repealing the smoking ban, vouchers for education and a radical overhaul of the NHS.

Yep, sounds like a left-wing plant to me…

          • no longer anonymous says:

            He’s pro-EU.

          • Brown's a Tosser says:

Anonymous, I know he is Pro EU and that is one of the reasons why I do not like him. There are several other reasons and I could cherry pick like you but can’t be arsed. Give it time people will come round once a few reports come out with his name on them.

          Right is wrong says:

No you are very wrong on this-I would stop digging if I was you before you make an even bigger fool of yourself

        • 41

He formerly worked for ‘Liberty’. That implies he is not just very liberal, but left-wing as well. What on earth is he doing in the IEA lobbying for corporate interests?

      Dave Atherton says:

Mark Littlewood will be a massive boost to this country’s free market thinking. He belongs to the “classical Liberal” wing and not the the diluted socialist faction of the Liberal Democrats. As his profile in the Daily Telegraph’s Top 50 most influential Liberals stated.

“He is firmly on the libertarian wing of the LibDems and is viewed as a right wing extremist by many in the party’s hierarchy. ”

        Down with Brown! says:

Sorry, but he’s only the 47th most influential lib dem, one behind the Harry Potter boy, this isn’t earth shattering news. No one outside the Westminster Village gives a damn about this sort of stuff.

        • 38
          Dave Atherton says:

          @Down with Brown

Where do you think politicians get their ideas from saving government spending, sale of council houses, the failure of smoking and alcohol bans, to health and education vouchers?

          Think tanks.

        • 40
          Memory Man says:

I assume the definition of “Westminster Village” is those people who give a damn about this sort of stuff.

I am sure nobody outside the “Fascist village” likes Nick Griffin. No one outside the “East Grimsby Fish Processing Village” cares about fish processing in East Grimsby. etc. etc. etc.

The question you might want to ask, given the historic impact of think-tanks in times of political change is whether you SHOULD give a damn about this sort of stuff. This man might (just might) have a big impact on how the policy mood evolves through the forthcoming austerity years.

What I don’t get is, if this is really of no interest why you post about it – and why you would think that your posting about something of no interest was of any interest to anyone.

      Brown's a Tosser says:

Just read this and cannot believe it. They were supposed to serve a min 14 years and do a little over 2 WTF is going on. Straw is the one who should do time what a waste of space he and this awful sad excuse for a Government are. Piano wire to good for the lot of them. Questions need to be raised about this particularly as we hear from Nulabour all thetime that our soldiers are fighting in Afghan to protect us here yet Nulabour then go and release these terrorists – something is very very wrong here.

    Brown's a Tosser says:

Dominic Littlewood would do a better job. Do you think he could spare some time – as a used car salesman he has all the attributes needed.

On a pedantic note, shouldn’t that headline read “Mark Littlewood takes over AT Institute of Economic Affairs’? He hasn’t purchased it, has he?
