Sorry to be O/T so quick but even the Grunidad are calling it a fire sale. Last time it was the IMF and this time fire sales of public assets. Is that gun in this R&M cartoon pointing at the heads of the British people or the MP’s?

Did some MP’s go on Bullseyes and claim expenses ?

          • One Flew over the No 10 bunker says:

The fire sale is panic stations. Labour selling off and privatising because this is basically what it amounts too. This is not a coherent policy or strategy in any shape or form its being made up now on the hoof. It was not announced at the conference and apparently all we were to have was investment and more investment as money was plentiful. Instead we now have scorched earth for this can only be what this is.

The situation is now beyond dire when we get to this position it is a scenario which says sell! sell anything that will keep the country afloat and keep the image going if only for a few weeks as something may turn up. It never does though does it.

Disaster is about to strike and I see a vote of no confidence and McRuin being forced out thence either an election before Xmas or a bitter ‘winter of discontent’ until March when Labour will be lucky to get 50 MP’s elected.

Labour have done it again but this time with brass knobs on and sugar on top.

oh dear Ann. just cos the media do as they are told and regurgitate new labour spin does not mean we are in a good state, far from it. the IMF are circling and it is not to grab old crash to give him a job.

What state are the other country’s in ? A hell of a lot better than GB’s GB.
they are all coming out of their recessions quicker and better placed than Great Britain. mostly because they don’t have illusions of grandeur !
instead of grandstanding they have all just sorted it ,got on with it and moved on the quicker the better.

Yes, but you sell off non-vital bits like the odd lung or kidney before you rent whatever’s left. Though you obviously get the lowest price the market will bear by running a downwards-only auction on each Lot of spare parts.

Pre-announcing the sale of our gold reserves will seem like genius in retrospect.

I assume those MPs not standing again will just pocket the dosh and get away with it.

Now that the MPs employer has offered to let them repay what they have stolen they have turned the theft from a criminal offence into a civil offence. As a result No M will have his collar felt by a bobby. A very clever move and I think it will work.

      • 125

Sorry, can’t remember the exact rules, but some of them will get more than just what they have stashed – the are entitled to an additional £30k ‘cushion’ fee when leaving their seats. If Gordon is an example of what jogging does to your health I think I’ll put my feet up.

It is high time the people did the ONLY decent thing, and make sure that these people are NOT re-elected. Government is planning to sell of the Dartford tunnel.

When this was built, we were promised that the toll charges would only be effected until the bridge was paid for, which should have been around 2004. Last year, they put the prices up by one third. Now it’s being sold off, who knows how much the new private owners would be able to charge us. There was talk that Roths*hild was interested in buying all the main motorways. Was this the reason Mandleson was on Deripaska’s yacht?

I hope this isn’t used to let the real crims off the hook by using an anodyne payback system for all.

Duck house man and moaty Hogg may well be accused of taking the piss as well as the money, but they declared all bills and submitted them in agreement with the dippy fees office and there was no suggestion of subterfuge or fraud.

Unlike the Greater Looton Slapper and the Oh Bugger I forgot I’d paid off my mortgage brigade, plus, Ladies and Gentlemen, our own Justice Secretary, one Straw. Who made a false claim, but was miraculously visited with a memory flash just before the sh!t hit the fan and generously offered to pay it back so that’s all right then.

This Straw is a model for any law abiding citizen, and I recommend his pamphlet “When to cough, an experts Guide on the noble art of beating Plod to it by a smidgeon.” There is an excellent chapter on juvenile drug dealing that we can only admire.

Our MP yesterday looked pretty sheepish in the local stores, and he’s one of the “clean” boys.

Mind you after 11 weeks holiday and failing to attend any public meetings where discussion by an Independent Review Panel over East Herts District Councillors have been overpaid for 2 years and question marks surround their expenses, he was entitled to feel he had earned his paid holidays.

We need a system where no MP is allowed to serve more than 10 years continuously and at each election every MP is reelected by their Party unless they stand as Independents.

The system has failed. Even the lovely Pakistani serving in the shop thought the British had failed – he couldn’t believe it.

Shadow justice minister Eleanor Laing has still not paid back £25,000 in expenses – nearly four months after Conservative leader David Cameron promised all Conservative MPs would.
Ms Laing pledged to return the money after avoiding £180,000 in tax on the £1million profit she made selling a second home partly paid for by taxpayers.

But the MP yesterday refused to deny she still owed the money. ‘Eleanor Laing will make her position about the repayment clear this week,’ said a Conservative spokesman. Tory MP Humfrey Malins also refused to say if he had paid back £9,700 for claiming on a flat where his children stayed. All the party’s MPs were expected to have returned monies owed, said a Conservative Party spokesman.

Mr Cameron won praise in June when he declared 91 Conservative MPs would repay more than £250,000.

It has since been widely reported that Ms Laing had settled the debt – a fact which appears to have gone uncorrected. But Ms Laing admitted to Metro she had not paid the money, adding that it was ‘none of your business’.

Ms Laing, who is married to a millionaire businessman, had difficulty raising the sum but would pay in a ‘couple of weeks’, party figures said at the time.

Prime minister Gordon Brown is thought to be among hundreds of MPs expected to explain or pay back expenses this week following an independent inquiry by Sir Thomas Legg.

She had no justification in the first place of needing a residence near Westminster.

      McGroom says:

Gordon record on asset sales (like Gold) should make the house think twice before agreeing to sell £2 billion of assets that will probably be worth £8 billion in five years.

Gordon just said “we will not shrink from taking the tough decisions necessary to turn around the economy”.

Surely, calling an election would be the best boost for this economy

O/T but this has just happened. Please bear with me on this as its relevant to most on here.

I checked out a price comparison website for some liability insurance over the weekend. The site could not give me a cost online and they stated they would contact me Monday. Ok fair enough I thought well they just did and here is the conversation between me and a well known price comparison website that has just happened verbatim…..

    Ring ring

    No10 = Hello

PCWebsiteOp = you were looking for a quote

No10= yes thats corect you have all the info how much?

PCWebsiteOp= Well are you going to take some out as I cannot tell you if you don’t do it in the next 30days

No10= Well I might well take it out but I need to know what the price is?

PCWebsiteOp= well are you definetly going to take this out?

No10= Well possibly but I need to know what the price is or at least an estimate?

PCWebsiteOp= well are you definetly going to take this out?

No10= I don’t know it depends on how much like I said?

PCWebsiteOp= Well I can’t tell, you unless you take it out

No10= What? All I am asking is how much before I sign?

PCWebsiteOp= Well I can’t tell, you unless you take it out

No10= But if I don’t know how much it is so how do I know if I want to take it out or not?

    PCWebsiteOp= Dunno?

No10 = Look I am really trying to buy something here why won’t you tell me?

    PCWebsiteOp = *silence*

No10 = Tell you what, when you think you can tell me how much it is likely to cost me then call me back otherwise just don’t bother.

I am still no wiser. UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!!!!!

No wonder this country is utterly fucked up.
(I noted that she mentioned ‘taking it out’ quite a bit )

      All too believable, I’m afraid.

Then you get the Indian bloke who’s been told to introduce himself on the phone as ‘Steve’. Do they think I won’t want to deal with someone if they’re called ‘Vikram’?
