Nobody, Guido. Nobody will pry into the prime minister’s medical affairs publicly to satisfy your reedy-voiced prurience. Sorry! If you want to live in a country where politics stoops that low, why not do something useful and productive for once in your life, make some money, and save enough to buy yourself a green card to the US of A where that kind of poisonous crap is accepted in public life. I don’t care if Gordon Brown is on anti depressants. It’s between him and his doctor.

A quick google check reveals that Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors have become – in the last four or five years – a popular treatment for some of the symptoms of Parkinsons Disease. Broon displays many of the symptoms of depression but maybe in this case to assume MAOIs are prescribed for depression is to leap to an obvious (and hence wrong) conclusion? If that is the case – and Parkinsons is involved – Brown’s personal tragedy is all the more complete. He demands a little sympathy. But someone must also demand – as Guido suggests – not only whether drugs are likely to alter his capacities, but what underlying condition those drugs are being prescribed for?

A quick google check reveals that there’s been growing interest in the effectiveiness of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors in the symptomatic control of parkinsons disease. Broon certainly betrays many of the symptoms of depression – but perhaps leaping to the conclusion that MAOIs are being prescribed to treat it is too straightforward (and a bit unlikely, given their apparent dangers and unpolularity with professionals). If Broon has parkinsons – early stages – then his personal tragedy is all the more complete – meaning he demands a little sympathy and, very pertinently, somebody really *must* ask the question Guido poses – albeit in a different form. It’s not just the drugs that might be questioned, but the condition that they are treating.

Were Parkinson’s the problem Broon’s human tragedy would be all the more complete – and the poor man deserve some serious sympathy at a personal level. It would also make it all the more important that someone asks the questions Guido poses as soon as they can…..

If he is taking those drugs, it may be that he is in the early stages of Parkinson’s. That’s a common combination to reduce tremors.
