Libyan Oil for Prisoner Letters

They are released here for your reading.  Be careful to read between the lines…

UPDATE : Link fixed.

MandyUPDATE II : Let Guido remind you what Lord Mandelson said when it was put to him that there was a deal done: “It’s not only completely wrong to make such a suggestion it’s also quite offensive”.

Lying and feigning queeny indignation…

        Julian says:

According to David Cameron. “The British Prime Minister has got to be straight with the British people”.

        Here goes ‘being straight’

        1) The economy is fucked. Brown has fucked it up and it is so fucked up that even that fuckwit Osborne can not unfuck it.
        2) Brown told the Libyans that if they made sure that BP was the preferred Seven Sister company for Libya then he would release the Lockerbie bomber. Of course this has nothing at all to do with his future appointment as a non-executive director of BP.
        3) British troops in Afghanistan do not have the correct equipment since, (i) Brown and his cronies need a helicopter with a decent range to get around the UK and the only one with that range is the Chinook. That’s why you are more likely to see Chinooks flying over Central London now than over Helmand province and (ii) It costs £1,300 for iOTV Interceptor 2 bulletproof vests and if you multiply that by 9,000 troops then you get the cost of 30 press advisors to the MoD.
        4) Brown’ first experiment as the World’s Greatest Commodities Broker was a disaster. His personal portfolio of 50% iof Britain’s gold reserves were sold AFTER he announced that he was going to sell, rather like putting your cards faceup on the table in a poker game and then raising the stakes. In fact it is so bad that when a commodity dramatically dips in price it is commonly known now as a “Brown Bottom”.

      Budgie says:

      There are two missing links:

      1. Brown was silent for over a week, thereby giving the impression that there was no involvement by the UK government.

      2. Justice administration is devolved to Scotland, but foreign affairs are not.

Apart from the issues of the degree of guilt of Megrahi, the damage to UK-USA relations and the UK government’s sticky fingers, this shows (yet again) that Brown is both cowardly and incompetent. It is also a UK constitutional crisis, which seems to have been overlooked by the msm.

Not sure McCoward has the imagination for it, but one never knows. Mincing Mandy’ll advise him, if the poisonous little shirt lifter isn’t too busy defrauding a mortgage company to offer assistance.

    The following seems clear:

    1. Straw made a show of inserting a paragraph into the Prisoner Transfer Agreement to exclude Megrahi, knowing that the Libyans would refuse it;

    2. The PTA gave Megrahi legal rights to be considered for transfer to Libya on humanitarian grounds, thus tying the hands of Scottish ministers. Straw writes some humbug about judicial review to the effect that the Scottish Courts could effectively resist Megrahi’s legal challenge to a decision to keep him in Scotland. They couldn’t, if he was dying of cancer.

    3. MacAskill is a mug. He could have delayed the process until Megrahi was too sick to be moved. Why didn’t he?

Course, it would have looked really stupid to keep Biggs in prison to die when a 270+ convicted (rightly or wrongly) murderer was allowed to go home.

It isn’t unless we stop printing money AKA inflation.

Inflation means higher costs. We might have credit deflation (i.e. no-one wants to lend people money to buy stuff they’re unlikely to pay back) but that was a sign that far too much credit was created in the first place.

If we let bankrupt banks go bust then we could have printed the money and bailed out Depositors, but we bailed out bondholders with taxpayers money and kept bankrupt banks around too. So taxpayers have to pay off the debt and have higher inflation.

    • 435

Exactly! There’s been little mention of this by the State Broadcaster. Since “global warming” claptrap is now proving more and more difficult to justify, the Government now claims the rise in duty is to fund “services”.

  29. 74
    J R Hartley says:

I don’t think this clarifies things at all. As you say reading between the lines – they are desperately putting pressure on the Scots to get this deal signed.

Question – how many other Libyan prisoners does Scotland presently hold?

Is this whole trade deal not entirely conducted on the basis of getting the bomber back in Libya?

    Gross hypocrisy!

  30. 75
    Marian says:

The smears and innuendo’s that are coming thick and fast from media propagandists about the Megrahi compassionate release are becoming tiresome because of the fact that if this decision had been taken independently by a panel of Scots Judges instead of the Justice Secretary, the decision would have been exactly the same given what Scots law clearly says regarding the terms and conditions for compassionate release.

Make no mistake this is an attack by ill-informed people on the Scots justice system. Scots Justice is not and never shall be at the beck and call of other nations who have different views of what justice should be and Scots Justice most certainly has no place for simply punishing people for revenge sake despite what these ill-informed critics appear to want.

The Scots legal establishment plus most rank and file New Labour and Lib Dem MSP’s know this and that is why they are quietly supporting Kenny MacAskill’s decision.

You cannot pick and choose which laws you abide with and those you will not abide with as David Cameron, and the unionist opposition leaders at Holyrood et al, would appear to want to do. In fact all that the latter have achieved is to demonstrate conclusively that they have no moral compass whatsoever when it comes to the means they employ to uphold their unionist beliefs.

So the only conclusion we Scots can reach is that they are gutter politicking of the very worst kind in order to cravenly appease the ill-informed critics of the decision in the UK and USA.

Unless of course he didn’t and it was someone else but of course that can’t be the case as it is further stated Scots justice is different to eveyone else’s because they are so fucking perfect in every way with sugar coated buubbles and teddy bears on top.

You are just a total bunch of Hoons and spineless gutless hoons at that. You caved in too demands which makes you no better than the person you released so just FUCK OFF with you poncy words. Quite so. If Megrahi was guilty of the murder of 270 people then he deserves to rot in jail to his dying day. In fact if he didn’t have cancer they should have fucking well given it to him and shat in his drip. So thats minus one for your precious fucking Scots justice.

And if he is innocent (as I and many others suspect and only fitted up to appease the yanks) then that’s another minus one for your fucking Scots justice for banging him up in the first case.

Scots justice has managed to manufacture the perfect lose-lose situation here.

Only an utter fucking moron could claim that Scots justice comes out of this with a shred of credibility.

It would have been better for Scots justice to allow the appeal, find his conviction unsafe and send him home. Then at least they would be acknowledging their original error.

But of course it takes a big man to admit he made a mistake. And between Salmond, Brown and Straw the only big thing about Brown is the fucking enormous cock-up he’s made of the entire economy, the only big thing about Salmondis his fucking enormous gut and the only big thing about Straw is the big surprise that he hasn’t been caught out yet.

      Marian says:

I see that some of the unionist rednecks are at it here with their eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth system of justice.

Scots justice may have got it wrong first time when it put Megrahi away for allegedly being the Lockerbie bomber but make no mistake Kenny MacAskill didn’t get it wrong this time with his strictly justice based decision to release Megrahi on compassionate grounds because he is soon going to die of cancer.

Much as I hate to disappoint the redneck faction here, there is no conspiracy here for the SNP for they and New Labour would NEVER enter into any sort of collusion over this or any other matter – such is the politics of Scotland.

However it is clear that the UK government thought it was in the best interests of the UK when it laid the pathway for Megrahi to be allowed to leave Scotland and return to Libya. Only time will tell us whether this was because they thought it would assist with the BP deal, or bringing Libya in from the cold on nuclear weapons etc., or whether it was because they genuinely believed that the wrong man was sent down for the crime.

You may also wish to note that there is a rumour going the rounds that a SNP MSP is going to name the real culprit during a debate on the issue in the Scots Parliament tomorrow using information gathered by Megrahi supporters. It is also rumoured that the person to be named is now strongly suspected of being the bomber by the USA and UK intelligence services. So there may be much more of this sorry tale still to come out and a lot more egg on faces in due course.

        Well done. Good job.

If what you say about rumours of an MSP naming the real culprit is true then it won’t come as any surprise to most of us that it was not Megrahi. Which again begs the question – what the fuck was Scottish justice doing allowing itself to be lead up the garden path like this?

So Scottish justice prostitutes itself once to appease the yanks. And a second time to appease the Libyans?

        What a fucking comedy system.

What a very shady world our labour conmen have come to inhabit. As they now face political annihilation and then eventually old age and exposure they need to be considering the epitaphs that they will be remembered by. It sure won’t be ‘rest in peace’ or ‘lies a man who served his country’.

60% of Britain will suffer power cuts because labour have failed to make provision for more energy producing industries in order to cover the expected shortfall in energy production.

Ed Miliband contended in one of his wordy little plans that the shortfall would be filled by windpower and then found that it wouldn’t.

So, as is the way with this dishonest government, rather than come out in the open and say so, he hid it away in the small print and hoped nobody would notice.

He knows they’re going to be out of power next year so expected they could then blame labour’s lack of planning onto the tories.

another load of green bollox, these low energy useless things ALL contain enough mercury to result in a danrerous contamination if broken including a risk to the health of every householder.
If broken onto a carpet it is almost impossible to safely remove using common household tools like a broom or a vacuum cleaner, all these would do is to spread it around into smaller and smaller droplets – making it so much easier to ingest, especially for the bottom feeders like small children and pets.
Think about how many millions of these bomblets are dropped and broken every day across the country – or broken in a waste bin – eventually ending up in a landfill or beneath the ocean ? This concept is another badly thought through set of “instructions for the common man” that is going to result in some serious blow-backs, but of course, that is in the future and a problem for future folks to worry about.

Open question to the British public – Should we release Megrahi (who may or may not be innocent), release means £13billion oil deal plus other commercial spin-offs? At least that would have been up-front and honest.

So how has Libya celebrated it’s 40 years of revolution?

Top billing of guests includes Robert Mugabe. Europe’s most notable attendees, apart from one uncomfortable english diplomat, who has not been named, were heads of fashion houses and luxury goods shops.

And the centre piece of the event was a giant screen showing gory pictures of the hangings of the men ghadafi has killed during his reign.

It is all you neo-fascists who need eliminating. Dave and Gordon are both simply simply wonderful people. I will fight for them, and me, to the bitter end. You silly types who keep saying that I did not vote for Dave as leader should remember that everyone is entitled to change their minds. Dave has promised me that I will get a VERY important job. Principles and integrity do still count, you ignorant snivellers.

So we could then just get Fred mk2 who will do it for just the salary ??

Tough on wealth and tough on the causes of wealth .

But let us suspend this disbelief at our Labour goverment , we should forget that most of them are confirmed marxists or left wing student radicals , this Nu labour of suites and yatchs , smear and spin , lies and deception , a goverment hanging on by its finger nails , as they avoid the rage in there voters and constituancies .

CW thinks the letters release is a bit of govt spin , as it seems now Alex Salmond doesnt have a view either , curiouser and curiouser .
I had thought Cameron had been a bit light , but on reflection he was right to highlight this , non view business as being of low standards , Blair brought in the presidential style of UK politics wich seems to have metamorphosised into presbyterian style of goverment . Gordon took to the media podium like a man unafraid of events , now we have heard nothing from him for 2 months , if parliament had been sitting matters would be very different .

Is it a lame duck or just ducking lamely ?? getting on with job does require the Pm to have a view I think on such a change in the treatment of mass murderers that have been tried in court . It does smack a little of the Great leader mentality , deciding fates as he samples yet another quails egg , or even curates egg .

The more he invents these charactures , the more you wonder if he is unable to find the one that has PM on it , “help ime in the lavvie” may court a little sympathy but it seems to be habit now , you get this impression that further communiquies will be written onto sheets of andrex and slipped quietly under the lavvie door at the appointed times to the press officer , so far the thoughts of great chairman brown , have dried up i wonder if hes run out of roll .

They spend everyday making sure their wealth isn’t spunked away. So you Labour luvvy diehard lying thieves, you are just maggots.

Now, what is so wrong with Libya and their Mad Dog Leader? OK so they hae no human rights etc but this is Africa. Plus ca change. Seems to me our Colonel has something we need and want. Seems to me we have things he needs and wants. So let’s trade. Great Britian is a trading nation. We’re not like some agricultural peasant society you find in Europe. We’ve been there and done that.

OK, I’m having second thoughts now about my earlier post (#172). I’ve just heard David Miliband on Today, and the way he went to such great lengths to avoid giving any straight answer to any of Evan’s questions makes me think he must have something to hide.

So I’m now more inclined to believe that something fishy has been going on. However, I still find it hard to believe that New Labour and the SNP could somehow be in it together.

What plausible scenarios are there involving some skullduggery on the part of the government that doesn’t require me to believe that an outbreak of trust has suddenly engulfed Labour-SNP relations?

    • 447
      Mikey says:

I listened to Miliband too —– he was trying to say that “Mr Brown does not want the prisoner to die in jail…..” is exactly the same as saying “We would not stand in the way if Scotland wanted to release him…..”

I keep saying it – this NuLabour bunch just don’t care what damage they do to our democratic system. They are incapable – it seems – of telling the truth, and are making the British population despair of our politicians. Couple that with the news yesterday that we can expect power cuts in a few year……… and we are rapidly becoming a third world nation.

      • 449
        shelling-out says:

It’s just a feeble excuse, and they know we know it. Clandestine meetings and telephone conversations – nothing on paper, which is why the letters didn’t really say a great deal. No replies to Falconer’s and Straw’s letters were published either, which makes me think they contained information which government would rather we didn’t know about.

As for the power, or lack of it, we will become a third world nation under their watch. They have nobody else to blame but themselves.

Shades of the 70’s under a Labour government.

        Reevo says:

Unlike most of the population the Westminster bubble is oblivious to the obvious, reality is a notion, something that always happens to somebody else and does not apply to them.
