This was intentional smearing by the BBC and by labour. They hope to circumvent libel laws by calling things "spoofs" whilst still reporting them as facts. So, the BBC reported it as fact, ie because it was an anti-tory story they just report it as-is no matter what, don’t bother to check anything, as long as it’s anti-tory then they’ll recount it as fact.
